1. Express the result of the calculations below to the correct number of significant
figures.(10 points)
1) 37.76 + 3.907 + 226.4 =
3) 2.02 2.5 =
2. Consider the voltmeter calibration data in Table 1. Plot the data using a suitable
scale. Specify the percent maximum hysteresis based on full-scale range. Input X is
based on a standard known to be accurate to better than 0.05 mV.(10 points)

6. The set-up for grinding a type of bearing is considered under control if the
bearings have a mean diameter of 5.000mm. Normal procedure is to measure 30
bearings each 10 minutes to monitor production. Production rates are 1000 per
minute.(20 points)
1) What action do you recommend if such a sample shows a mean of 5.060mm
with a standard deviation of 0.0025mm?
2) Suppose the mean diameter of the bearings must be held to within 0.2%.
Based on given information, how many bearings should be measured at each
10-minute interval?
8. The area of a flat, rectangular parcel of land is computed from the measurement
of the length of two adjacent sides, X and Y. Measurements are made using a
scaled chain accurate to within 0.5% over its indicated length. The two sides are
measured several times with the following results:(15 points)
= 556m
= 222m
= 5.3m
= 8
= 2.1 m
= 7
Estimate the area of the land and state the confidence interval of that measurement
at 95%.
