Enterprises are more dependent than ever on their network infrastructure, and IT is under pressure
to build a highly available network that supports converged communications and critical business
processes, while at the same time reigning in capital and operational expenses. Juniper EX4200
series switches can reduce IT overhead by creating a single management domain across wiring
closets and simplifying connectivity within the data center, enabling customers to build the
high-performance communication infrastructure they need while lowering capital and operational
expenses. This series switch therefore is widely deployed in enterprises and data centers. Some
specific fiber optic transceiver models that supported for Juniper EX4200 switches will be displayed
in this article for your convenience.

Introduction to Juniper EX4200 Switch

Typically, EX4200 switches are used in large branch offices, campus wiring closets, and data centers
where they can be positioned as the top device in a rack to provide connectivity for all the devices
in the rack. You can connect individual EX4200 switches together to form one unit and manage the
unit as a single chassis, called a Virtual Chassis. You can add up to 10 switches to the Virtual Chassis
as needed. Usually, EX4200 switches are available in models with 24 or 48 ports with either all ports
equipped for Power over Ethernet (PoE/PoE+) or only 8 ports equipped for PoE. All these models
provide ports that have 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet connectors. But there is one exception.
The EX4200-24F models provide 24 100/1000BASE-X SFP fiber ports and are not available with PoE
function.

Juniper EX4200 Switch Uplink Module Option

Each Juniper EX4200 series switch is equipped to support optional uplink modules featuring four
1GbE or two 10GbE ports. To ensure high availability in wiring closet and data center deployments,
the 1GbE or 10GbE uplinks may be distributed across any combination of switches that form a single
virtual chassis, regardless of whether theyre in separate wiring closets or at the top of separate
racks. EX4200 switches support three types of uplink modules:
SFP Uplink Module
The figure below shows the SFP uplink module, which provides four ports for 1-gigabit SFP
transceivers. You can install SFP transceivers in all four ports.

SFP+ and SFP+ MACsec Uplink Module

The figure below shows the SFP+ and SFP+ MACsec uplink module, which provides four ports for
1-gigabit SFP transceivers and two ports for 10-gigabit SFP+ transceivers.

When an SFP+ or SFP+ MACsec uplink module is operating in 10-gigabit mode, only the 10-gigabit
ports (ports 0 and 2) are enabled and you can use only SFP+ transceivers in those ports. When an
SFP+ or SFP+ MACsec uplink module is operating in 1-gigabit mode, all four ports are enabled and
you can use only SFP transceivers in all four ports.
XFP Uplink Module
The figure below shows the XFP uplink module, which provides two ports for 10-gigabit XFP
transceivers. You can install XFP transceivers in these two ports.

Fiber Optic Transceivers Supported for Juniper EX4200 Switch

The EX4200-24F models support 100BASE-FX/1000BASE-X SFP transceivers. Optional uplink
modules for EX4200 switches support 1000BASE-X SFP, 10GBASE-X SFP+, or 10GBASE-X XFP
transceivers. All these transceivers support DOM even if they are installed in uplink module ports
configured as Virtual Chassis ports. Now Fast Ethernet SFP transceivers, Gigabit Ethernet SFP
transceivers, 10-Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ transceivers and 10-Gigabit Ethernet XFP transceivers that
supported for EX4200 switches may be respectively displayed in following four tables.
