Assignment 1
(Submit problems 1 and 2 by Monday 4 PM. The problems should be submitted on A-4 size sheets
stapled together. Explanations should be clear.)
Remaining problems do not have to be submitted. However, you should attempt these problems not only to
grasp the ideas better but also to appreciate and to be able to work with them.
1. Here you have to analyze the dynamics of the sine map, xn+1 = rsin(xn ), with xn [0, 1 and r [0, 1].
(a) For what values of r will the sine map possess a stable period-1 point?
(b) Does there exist a period-2 orbit for some range of values of r? Show by plotting f 2 . Plot a rough,
qualitative plot by hand (not copied from computer) and use that to reason out the above.
(c) Will Period-2 lose stability at some value of r ? Use above plots to reason out. You dont have to nd
value of r at which this might happen.
2. Consider the following map xn+1 = exp(rxn ), with xn [0, ] and r [0, ]
(a) Find the xed points of the above map for all values of r. Argue out that these xed points will lose
stability at some value of r = rc and remain unstable for all r > rc . You do not have to nd rc but only
reason out that there must exist some rc .
(b) Reason out the following : There will occur a period doubling bifurcation at some value of r = rb . The
resulting period-2 orbit will be stable and remain so for all values of r > rb . Thus, there will occur only
1 period doubling bifurcation and no more. You aren't required to nd the value of rb .
3. For the logistic map, show that the period-2 orbit becomes unstable at r = 1 + 6
4. For the following map
xn+1 = 2xn /(1 + xn )
What states will the system get attracted to and are there any unstable states?
5. Here is a cubic map
xn+1 = 3xn x3n
