TEXT 1.

Children not exercising enough.

According to a recent UK government survey, many children in Britain are not doing enough
exercise in order to stay healthy and avoid becoming obese in the future. More than 260,000 people
in the UK were interviewed and the results showed that nearly 72 per cent of school children do not
do the recommended hour of daily sport or activity outside school.
The survey also discovered that 45 per cent of children watched TV or played non-active video
games before going to school in the morning, and only 22 per cent did something active after eating
dinner. The UK Public Health Minister said the results were worrying and that if the UK was going to
cut obesity levels in the future, young people should do at least an hour of exercise per day.
Members of the National Obesity Forum commented that they werent surprised by the information
because now many children stay at home in their rooms and play on their computers or watch TV.
However, they recognised that it was a big problem to find ways to make physical activity more fun,
and that it was unrealistic to think children would prefer to go to their local park if the facilities there
were in a bad condition or even dangerous. One doctor from the charity Weight Concern suggested
that the government should campaign to prevent the problem by giving help and information to whole
families. He added that there was clear evidence that healthy habits and an active life in childhood
could reduce the risk of people getting diseases such as cancer or heart disease later.
Recommended exercise included activities to improve bones, muscles, and flexibility at least twice a
week.

TEXT 2.

How many ways are there to learn a language?

Do you want to learn a language? We interviewed people who learned a language in very different ways.

1 Sasha, a computer analyst. She stayed in London and did an intensive course in German.
I studied French and Spanish at university, but then I got a job with computers. I missed learning a language,
so one day I asked my boss for a months holiday and enrolled on an intensive German course in London.
We did six hours of lessons every day, so it was quite hard work. I met people from different countries, but we
only communicated in German. The problem was when I went home, I spoke English again. The course was
fun and I learned a lot, but Id like to do a course in Germany next time.

2 June, a mother of two. She went to evening classes.

I stopped working when I had my first child. I enjoyed being a full-time mum, but a year ago, I decided to do
something new. Thats why I joined a French evening class. At first, it was quite difficult. We had to speak
French all the time in the classroom and I didnt understand anything. Also, when you only have one lesson a
week, you have to do a lot at home. I studied in the evenings when the children were in bed and I listened to
French tapes in the car. At the end of the year I could speak French quite well.

3 Tim, an ex- student. He went to Italy to learn Italian.

When I finished university, I wanted to travel and learn a language. I already knew a bit of Italian, so I decided
to go there. I didnt want to do formal lessons because I was tired of studying, so I bought some tapes and
listened to them before I went. I travelled around the country for six months. When youre on your own you
have to communicate with people you cant speak your own language. Its the only way to learn! I didnt have
much money, so I worked in bars. That meant I met a lot of people and learned a lot of Italian. I also had a
great time. Id definitely recommend it.

4 Marie, a student. She went to Bangladesh with an NGO to do voluntary work.

Many people in Bangladesh speak English, but Im French and my English isnt that good, so I decided to try
and learn some Bengali while I was doing the volunteer project. I was working with small children on an
educational programme in a small village, so in the end I could learn a lot of basic phrases. At first it was
difficult, but the children were fantastic. They are very visual when they teach you things. Instead of using a
book, I spent a lot of time walking around the village and repeating important words.

5 Sarah, an office worker. She fell in love with a Brazilian on the internet and learnt Portuguese.
Im a great fan of websites where you can chat to new people, which is how I made friends with Paolo. We
soon started chatting online more and more, and it was obvious we got on really well, but sometimes it was
quite difficult to communicate. His English was quite good but my Portuguese was zero, so I finally decided to

try and learn the language. I took some time off and did an intensive course in Lisbon and now Im feeling
more confident. Im thinking of going out to Brazil next summer and Paolo is obviously pleased.
