Some questions about compounding will be delivered on DVD. You will watch the station on
a large screen in a room with others. An invigilator will read step by step instructions to you
for each video station. You will be given time to read through the question sheet before
viewing the video. This is a sample of the station format you might encounter.

Preparation for Sterile Compounding

OBJECTIVES
To identify and document errors and omissions (missed steps) in procedures and incorrect
techniques used when preparing to enter a sterile environment, in order to prepare sterile
intravenous medications.

CANDIDATES INSTRUCTIONS
You are a hospital pharmacy technician working in the Sterile Compounding room. You are
to observe and evaluate a new pharmacy technician who is gowning prior to preparing a
sterile compound.
The video recording you are about to view shows the new pharmacy technician preparing
herself to enter the sterile room, to prepare a sterile compound.
When viewing the recorded performance of the pharmacy technician your tasks are to:
1. Observe and document the pharmacy technicians performance in gowning using
the Observation Checklist below.
2. For each step in the process document what steps the pharmacy technician
performed by filling in the bubble under YES
3. For each step in the process evaluate the technique used in performing the
activity and identify what the pharmacy technician did INCORRECTLY by filling in
the bubble under YES.
