Basic Well Logging - FMEV2002

Term 1 2015/16

Homework Assignment 5
The assignment is due on November 12, 2015
The Objectives of this homework assignment are:
1. To interpret density, neutron and sonic porosity logs and utilize
them in the determination of formation porosity and hydrocarbon
type.
2. To review concepts in density, neutron and sonic logging.
The following guidelines should be followed in completing the
homework assignment
1. The assignment should be viewed as a technical report which you are
submitting in response to questions posed to you by your manager or
supervisor in your capacity as a petroleum engineer working for a major
energy company. The assignment should be written as a technical report, i.e.
using clear and concise grammatically correct statements and descriptions.
2. The presentation should be clean, neat, well-organised and legible.
3. All figures, tables, and plots should be properly annotated with captions and
should show units of measurement.
4. All results should contain the relevant measurement units and care must be
taken in selecting the number of decimal places displayed.
5. Care should be taken to ensure that there are appropriate references made to
all figures and attachments provided and all spreadsheets which are included
should be explained.
6. All working must be shown.

Please note that this assignment must be done individually. Points will
be deducted from assignments which do not adhere to the guidelines
above.

Question 1 [50 marks]

Using Log Exercise 2 4 and the spreadsheet that you built in the previous
assignment, determine the following for all points which you have selected:
a. Density porosity (5 marks)
b. Corrected density porosity. Use the value of Vsh for Tertiary rocks in
calculating the corrected density porosity. (5 marks)
c. Neutron porosity (5 marks)
d. Corrected neutron porosity. Use the value of Vsh for Tertiary rocks in
calculating the corrected neutron porosity. (5 marks)
e. Effective porosity (5 marks)
f. Calculate the hydrocarbon saturation using the effective porosity in (e).
(10 marks)
g. Calculate the in-situ hydrocarbon density. (10 marks)
h. Determine the type of hydrocarbon present. (5 marks)
Kindly give an example of each separate calculation stating clearly the equations
used.

Paste a copy of your spreadsheet here to answer this question and

please ensure that only the relevant columns are displayed.

Question 2 [20 marks]

Mineralogical and fluid analysis of a rock-core sample indicated the
presence of quartz, dolomite, and limestone. The following specific
properties were measured at irreducible water saturation with the
sample saturated with hydrocarbons:
(a) Density of the rock sample = 2.28 g/cc
(b) Density of connate water = 1.15 g/cc
(c) Density of hydrocarbon = 0.8 g/cc
(d) Average hydrocarbon saturation = 0.75
(e) Solid fraction of dolomite = 0.2
(f) Solid fraction of limestone = 0.6
What is the porosity of this rock sample?
Question 3 [8 marks]

In a sandstone reservoir an interval transit time of 105 sec/ft was measured on

a sonic log. The sonic velocity of the matrix is 18000 ft/sec. Assuming an interval
transit time of 185 sec/ft in the invaded fluid, determine the porosity of the
reservoir.

Question 4 [10 marks]

You are working with porosity logs the header indicates that the logs are
recorded on a limestone matrix and fluid density is 1.0 g/cc. The density
porosity reading is 15% and the neutron porosity reading is 8%. What is (a) the
most likely lithology of the formation and (b) the average porosity?

Question 5 (12 marks)

The neutron and density logs in a pure shale read 54 and 24 sandstone porosity
units, respectively. The neutron and density logs record readings of 33% and
30% respectively in a water bearing sand. Assuming that the corrected density
porosity is equal to the corrected neutron porosity, since this is a water bearing
sand, what is the value of Vsh in the formation?
