Ive always had an interest in architecture and took physics, science and calculus at
college. The careers department suggested civil engineering as I wanted a career with
lots of job opportunities and variety. Civil engineering appeared to tick all the boxes. My
study was an awesome combination of practical and academic skills. Doing the diploma
first gave me a really good grounding to build on and eased me into the subject. I love
the variety of my work its a fantastic mix of office and site work. Since graduating
from Unitec Ive completed a graduate rotation programme, which involved spending
a year working at a contracting firm, the council and as a consultant. Ive also gone
on to complete a Master of Engineering Studies (Transportation) at The University
of Auckland, and completed a Transpower Neighbourhood Engineer project with a
student from Rosehill Special School, which was really rewarding and enjoyable.

Ive always been a practical person. I like building
things and figuring out how they work. Now I build
structures like bridges, retaining walls and motorway
interchanges. Its really versatile - some days Im on site
all day and others Im in the office. I wasnt expecting to
move up the company so quickly. I even got a company
car which I didnt expect in my first year out of uni! The
degree programme at Unitec is very practical with lots
of site visits and projects that are based on real-life
construction work. This really helped to make sense
of what we learnt in the classroom, and helped me
realise its what I want to do. Im really proud of my
IPENZ Award for graduating top of my class, and the
Hynds Engineering Award I got at the end of my studies.
I finished my first job last year, which was a huge
achievement for me. Its so rewarding to see the end
product and think oh yeah, I built that.

I like the varied work, as each job is unique. I love the office atmosphere we have
at CADViz, as the people are very supportive of questions. I was also fortunate
enough to have the opportunity to learn a new CAD program on the job. It adds
to my skill set and keeps things interesting. My Unitec qualification is very
significant for my current role it has laid the foundation to further my learning
and knowledge in my current job. It was encouraging that I was considered a
person rather than just a student number. I also thoroughly enjoyed the paper
History of Design. I was fond of learning about architects like Mies van der Rohe
and their past works. I liked how his interpretation of architectural design has had
an impact on todays infatuation with clean lines, free-flowing open spaces and
raw industrial steel and glass. Learning about these artists and how their ideas
have impacted the built environment really interested me.

Ive always been intrigued by the built environment
and I aspired to manage large commercial construction
projects. I started as a carpenter to get the practical
building knowledge and then moved onto the diploma
to get the management knowledge. My qualifications
opened up employment opportunities and helped me
get to where I am now. Ive worked on lots of exciting
buildings including the iconic University of Auckland
Business School and buildings within the historic Mt
Eden Prison. The detail, planning and execution of the
buildings can be very challenging and exciting and I use
the theoretical knowledge I learnt at Unitec every day.
Im particularly proud of managing the ASB North Wharf
building site. It was a very technical and challenging build,
and Im proud to have left my mark on Auckland. The next
step for me is to progress into project management of
large commercial projects.

The Graduate Diploma in Construction Project

Management is a great stepping stone if you want to

technology and manual drawing skills, they work
alongside architects to turn design concepts into
the documents to construct a building. The National
Diploma in Architectural Technology will give you the
skills to design and produce construction drawings for
both residential and commercial buildings.

Autodesk Training Centre

Professional development courses

Were part of the worldwide Autodesk Authorised
Training Centre network, and currently offer training in
two Autodesk products:
AutoCAD: the leading 2D computer-aided design
package that has been the industry standard for the
last two decades.
Revit Architecture: state-of-the-art 3D software
used by most of the larger architecture practices
around the world.
The courses listed below are delivered as intensive
three-week blocks (from 6pm to 9pm two nights per
week) throughout the year. The tuition fee for each
course is $690 (including GST), or $450 (including
GST) for current students.

Introduction to AutoCAD Essentials Level I

This course is ideal for new AutoCAD users who want
comprehensive training in AutoCAD. It covers the
features, commands and techniques to create, edit
and print drawings with AutoCAD. The course includes
hands-on exercises where you explore how to create
2D production drawings.

Intermediate AutoCAD Professional Level II

This intermediate-level course builds on the basic
concepts covered in Introduction to AutoCAD. The
course is specifically designed for experienced
AutoCAD users looking for additional training to
take full advantage of AutoCAD and become more
productive when creating, annotating and printing
drawings.

Revit Architecture Essentials Level I

This course covers the basics of Autodesk Revit
Architecture, from building design to construction
documentation. Youll be introduced to the concepts
of building information modelling and the tools for
parametric design and documentation. The course
includes hands-on exercises.

Revit Architecture Intermediate Level II

Learn about site design, advanced rendering techniques,
phasing and design options, creating families of
custom components and collaborating on a design. The
course includes hands-on exercises representing realworld design scenarios and is taught by experienced
professionals from the architectural industry.

The indicative fee listed on the page for each
programme in this brochure was the approximate 2013
annual programme fee (including GST).
Programme fees for 2014 have not yet been set and
Unitec is currently reviewing them in the context of the
Ministry of Educations fees maxima policy. As soon as
they are approved, 2014 fees for these programmes
will be available on www.unitec.ac.nz
The indicative fee acts as a guide only. You will be
notified of your exact fee when you have enrolled.
Please do not send any payment until you receive your
fee invoice.
The programme fee you pay at enrolment covers
tuition and class materials. You will also have to pay a
Student Services fee and any applicable NZQA charges.
Textbooks for your programme are an additional cost.
The deadline for payment of student tuition fees is
seven days before your programme starts. You can pay
by cheque, EFTPOS, credit card or in the form of an
approved application for a student loan. (You should

Our withdrawal policy

You may withdraw from a course by giving written
notice to Student Central (Te Pae Krero). If you
withdraw from a course before 10 percent of the course
has been completed you are generally entitled to a
refund of 90 percent of fees. There is no refund of fees
if you withdraw after this time, except in exceptional
circumstances. For full details, read the Admission,
Enrolment and Fees Policy available on our website at
www.enrolmentinfo.unitec.ac.nz
No record of the enrolment will be entered on your
academic record if you withdraw before 10 percent
of the course is completed. If you withdraw after
10 percent of the course is completed a grade of W
(representing withdrawal from the course) will appear
on your academic record.
