Energy efficiency at partial loads - ESEER index

The E.E.R. i ndex repres ents an es timate of the energy efficienc y of
the c ooling unit in nominal design conditions. In reality, the operating
time of a chiller in nominal conditions is us uall y less than the operati ng
time i n partial load c onditi ons.
The E.S.E.E.R. (European Seas onal E.E.R.) is an index that
estimates the average seasonal energy efficienc y of the cooling unit i n
four load and water temperature c onditi ons. Generall y, two water
chillers with the same E.E.R. may have different E.S.E.E.R. values. In
fact, for an air-cool ed c hiller, the average energy efficienc y depends on
design choices and on the inl et air temper ature at the condensing heat
exc hanger.
The E.S.E.E.R. energy index, introduc ed by the European
community (Project E.E.C.C.A.C. - Energy Efficienc y and Certification
of Central Air Conditioners), is characterised by the water temperatures
(see table B) and by the energy weights that are assigned to the four
load c onditions consi dered in the calcul ation: 100% , 75%, 50% and
25%.

KTR Remote keyboard

The keyboard with display makes it possible to view the wor king
temperature and all the unit proc ess variables, as well as providi ng
access to setting parameters for oper ating set poi nts and their
modification. For purposes of tec hnical assistance, it allows pass wordprotected access to the unit's management par ameters (acc ess for
authorised pers onnel onl y).

The remote keyboard with displ ay (KTR) allows the remote c ontr ol and
display of all the unit's digital and anal ogue process variables . It
therefore possibl e to control all the machine functi ons directl y in the
room. It allows setting and management of ti me periods (if KSC

Serial connection for control

All units are equi pped with elec tronic c ontrol that is set up interfac e
with an external BMS via a serial c ommunicati on line by means of
the KRS485 s erial interface acc essor y (proprietar y pr otoc ol or
ModBus RTU) and the following converters.
KRS232 RS485/RS232 converter for connection to super vision

The FTT10 LonWor ks compatible interface is also available.

Supervision
In general, a super vision s ys tem allows access to all unit functions,
such as:
making all s ettings which are accessi ble through the keyboard;

Installation
The unit is designed for outdoor installation.
The unit is equipped with male threaded water connections.
Segregate the unit if installed i n areas accessible to pers ons under
14 years of age.
The unit must be positioned to c ompl y with the mi nimum
recommended cl earances, bearing in mind the acc ess to water and
electrical connections .
The unit c an be equipped with anti- vibration mountings on request
(KSA).
We rec ommend installing intercept val ves that is olate the unit fr om
the res t of the s ystem.
It is ess ential to fit a metal mes h filter (squar e mesh of no greater
than 0.8 mm) on the unit return piping. The mesh must be of a suitable
size, with s uitabl e press ure drops .
However it is installed, the c oil inlet air temperatur e (ambient air)
must remain withi n the s et limits .
The unit may not be installed on brac kets or shel ves.
Correct installation and positioning include levelling the unit on a
surface c apable of bearing its weight.
The THAIY unit comes complete with a condensati on c ollection tray,
with duc tabl e drai ns.

Maximum water circuit content

The unit is equipped with thr eaded male water connections and a
manual air bleed val ve positioned both inside and outside the shell.
It is necessar y to ins tall intercept val ves that is olate the unit from the
rest of the s ystem. It is also advisable to ins tall elas tic connec tion joints.
A metal mes h filter (with a square mesh meas ure no more than 0.8
mm), of a suitabl e size and with s uitable pressure drops , must be fitted
on unit return pipes .
The water flow through the heat exc hanger should not fall below the
val ue c orrespondi ng to a temperature differential of 8C with the
compressor at the maxi mum number of r.p.m.
During long periods of i nacti vity, it is advisabl e to drai n the water
from the s ystem.
It is possible to avoid draini ng the water by addi ng ethyl ene glycol to
the water circuit (see Use of antifreeze s oluti ons).
The expansion tank is sized on the basis of the water c ontent of the
indivi dual machine. Any additional expansion tank should be sized by
the i nstaller on the basis of the s ystem.

All units are equi pped with an expansion tank that li mits the maxi mum
amount of water contained in the s ys tem. If the water contents exceed
the values indic ated in the table, an additional expansion tank will be
required.

Use of anti-freeze solutions

The us e of ethylene gl ycol is rec ommended
if you do not wish to drai n the water from the
hydraulic s ystem during the wi nter stoppage, or
if the unit has to suppl y c hilled water at
temperatures l ower than 5C The additi on of
glycol changes the physic al properties of the
water and c ons equentl y the perfor mance of the
unit. T he proper percentage of glyc ol to be
added to the s ystem c an be obtained from the
most demandi ng operating conditi ons fr om
thos e shown below.

Table "H" shows the multipli ers which allow

the c hanges in perfor mance of the units to be
determined in proportion to the required
percentage of ethylene glycol.
The multipliers refer to the following
conditi ons: c ondenser inl et water temperature
35C; c hilled water outlet temperature 7C;
temperature differ ential at evaporator and
condens er 5C.

For different operating conditi ons, the same

coefficients c an be used as their variations ar e
negligible.
