Abstract

In our experiment were going to determine the shear strength of soil that is not allowed
to drain using Consolidated Undrained. The results of the test can be drawn using the
mohrs circle. With the used of drawn mohrs circle you will be able to determine the
shear strength, failure angle, modulus of elasticity and Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope.
With the use of this test, we will be able to determine the behavior of the soil when it is
subjected to an applied load. First we excavate to get our sample, the sample must be
undisturbed. After getting a chunk of soil, we trimmed it in the molder, the sample must
perfectly fit into the molder and no visible voids in the outside surface of the sample so
that the rubber membrane will not rip apart or will not cause any damage to it when it
will apply a pressure. After trimming it perfectly, our professor shows us how to put the
sample in the rubber membrane so that when were on our field we know exactly what
to do and test the sample using the tri-axial test. After the test has done, we acquired a
maximum stress of 900.034Kpa. Therefore, in able to get all the data based on the test,
first the area of the specimen and after the test you will get the maximum shear strength
capacity of the soil sample this data gives you the computation for the maximum stress
to be computated by Force over Area of the specimen. You must able to draw the
Mohrs Circle which provide you the other datas needed.

Interpretation of data

First, we get the height, diameter and weight of our sample before putting it on the UTM.
After the test is done, we are able to get the maximum shear strength capacity of our
sample. We then compute for the maximum stress using the formula, force over area.
The area of our sample is 1488.83mm 2 and the maximum shear strength capacity of our
sample is 1.34 KN. The maximum stress we get is 900.034Kpa. Weight of moisture
sample with can is 371.32 g while the dry sample with can is 341.13 g. Therefore, we
can get the moisture content of the sample, it has an 8.85%. The reason why the
sample got only 900.034kPa only is that the sample has a large value of MC; the larger
the MC, the more voids the sample has; the more voids the sample has, the weaker it
gets; the weaker the sample is, the least load can carry the sample.

Conclusion

Consolidated Undrained is one type of tri-axial test, which determine the shear strength
of soil that is not allowed to drain. The results you can get in the test can be drawn
Mohrs circle, after that you will be able to determine the shear strength, failure angle,
modulus of elasticity and Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope. Therefore, tri-axial test
determines the maximum shear capacity of the soil. The other data needed can be
drawn using the Mohrs circle diagram. The maximum shear strength of the soil
depends on the moisture content of the sample; the larger the MC, the more voids the
sample has; the more voids the sample has, the weaker it gets; the weaker the sample
is, the least load can carry the sample.
