INTRODUCTION
A group of 5 students in semester 7 of the Bachelor of Mechanical
Engineering (Manufacturing) from the Occupational Safety and Health (MEM603)
class group A participated in an industrial visit to MFORCE BIKE HOLDING SDN BHD,
which is located at Bukit Mertajam, Pulau Pinang. The company specialized in the
assembly of SYM motorcycles and scooters in Malaysia. SYM is a motorcycle brand
from the Sanyang Motor Co. Ltd, a company based in Taiwan.

PURPOSE OF VISIT
The purpose of this visit is to understand how the Occupational Safety And
Health Act is applied in the company.

OBJECTIVE

To understand Occupational Safety and Health and how it is applied in the

industry
To look into the Occupational Safety and Health Management System
To understand the types of hazards that are involved and how to solve it
To examine the facilities for Occupational Safety and Health in the industry

COMPANYS BACKGROUND

SANYANG MOTORS
SYM is the brand that embodies Sanyangs insistence on human touch and

Sanyang Motor Co., Ltd. was founded in 1954 in Neihu Taipei, and initially
started as a manufacturer of bicycle generator light with only 10 employees in a
small old office sized around 100 square meters. With its perseverance and stamina,
Sanyang Motor has illuminated a splendid future for Taiwan. Throughout the past 50
years, with the high-speed development of technology, Sanyang Motor has stably
obtained its international recognition with solid foundation in the automobile and
motorcycle fields.

Devise of Engine published by Sanyang won the Taiwanese Special Award of

the 19th Small Engine Technology Conference (SETC 2013).

SYMs T2 was awarded the 2012 Taiwan Excellence Award.
VMEP was honored by the Chairman of the Peoples Committee of Dong Nai
Province with the Grand Award for the Achievements of Excellence
Performance in Movement in the category of Good Building Labor Relations in

the Enterprises.
SYM T2 won the 20th Taiwan Excellence Awards.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT TENTATIVE

Students were given a quick introduction of the company and are

explained the policies and background of the factory

Students were given a tour throughout the assembly line to observe

the processes in the factory

Students were invited to join for a quick refreshment provided by the

company

Students were given the chance to test ride the mopeds, scooters and
cafe racers by SYM

The students leaves the SYM factory back to UiTM Pulau Pinang

DISCUSSION
From the industrial visit, we knew more about SYM, Mforce Bike Holdings Sdn.
Bhd. and what the company is all about in terms of its assembly processes and its
Occupational Safety and Health system, as we were given a perspective on the
implementation of Occupational Safety and Health in the assembly of motorcycles
industry. This provides us the idea of what the company is doing and the
contributions it has given to the engineering field. We were also able to observe the
assembly processes of the motorcycles that follow the regulations of Occupational
Safety and Health Act accordingly. With this exposure, we has experienced on how it
feels like to be working a assembly line that considers safety and health as priority.
We were given a tour throughout the assembly line and interacted with the
staffs of the factory to know more about their scope of work. This provides us the
opportunity to ask anything that comes to our mind or anything that concerns us
and able to fulfill the curiosity that were built in ourselves over the past times. We
were also able to see the works done by the Safety and Health Department to
ensure that hazards are able to be prevented by implementing Occupational Safety
and Health Management System, such as the basic hazard register and workplace
inspection checklist.
There are a few suggestions that we addressed to the staff on how to
implement better safety and health components to improve the companys
performance in their field of work. First, we suggested the use automatic chain hoist
instead of carrying the chassis to the assembly line, which could reduce hazards to
the workers when carrying it, such as muscle strain and back injuries. Other than
that, we suggested of adding another Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which is
the ear plug to protect the workers from the noisy factory which mostly came from
the airgun which can cause ear damage. Although the noise level is still low, long
term exposure of the noise will eventually became a hazard. As the English saying
goes - preventing is better than cure.
At the end of the visit, we were provided with a quick brunch to refresh
ourselves, while having non related talk with the staffs. The company also gave us
goodie bags which includes the SYM t-shirt and water bottle as an appreciation from

them to. Not only has this visit provided the understanding of the Occupational
Safety and Health implementation in the workplace, but also an experience where
we wont forget.

CONCLUSION

From the industrial visit, we were able to understand how Occupational Safety
and Health is applied in the company. Other than that, we were also able to identify
the hazards that are involved in the manufacturing site and also how the company
is able to prevent the hazards from happening. Overall, the company practices safe
working environment, although there are room for improvements. In conclusion, this
visit provided us a better understanding on the use of Occupational Safety and
Health in the workplace.

APPENDIX
