Tynemouth Firsts fail to take Stock!

Tynemouth’s First XI hosted Stockton in their first Dukes NE Premier League game of the
season. Stockton got off to a rapid start with J Rickard and K Ward scoring freely off skipper
Andrew Smith and David Hymers. A huge score in the hazy sunshine seemed to be on the
cards. The stand was broken when Ward was run out for 39 but J Watson 25 and then M
Gajanayake 89 kept up the pressure on Tynemouth who were missing some important
ingredients for this first fixture. Rickard posted 81 before Phil Morse had him well taken
behind by Greg Hollins. Stockton posted 282 – 7 with Tynemouth in the latter stages better
managing to hold up the run rate. Smith 0-58, Hymers 0-35, Morse 3-79, Dan Young 1-32 and
Jamie Coates 2-74 were the Tynemouth bowlers.
The reply started well and confidently enough in the face of this high target.
Openers Dan Young and Iain Purdy combined well until Young was trapped
LBW on 25 by K Rowland who then promptly bowled Ben Debman for a
duck. Skipper Smith then steadied his ship for the second time in two games
with a defiant 71 not out. Purdy went on to make a creditable 54 before
falling to a catch off Greaves who also trapped Andy Lineham for 3, then also
Tony Turner for 2. Greg Hollins aided the defences with a steady 25 leaving
Morse only a few balls to survive for the draw. Tynemouth completed their
overs on 211-6 to take 9 points from the game with Stockton obtaining 15.
Greaves 3-33 and Rowland 2-57 were the main wicket takers for the visitors.
The reverse fixture saw Tynemouth Seconds travelling down the A19 where their hosts posted
198 thanks to D Phinn 36, L Ward 91 not out. Young Josh Koen was the hero of Tynemouth’s
bowling attack taking 4-56 with his deceptive pace and style. The Tynemouth reply faltered
and only the returning Marcus Turner with a typical 70 made any real impression on this
modest target. Sadly Tynemouth were dismissed for 172, only 26 runs short. Things can only
get better when the full first team squad is available and so the seconds will then have a
fuller selection of players.
In the Third Division, Tynemouth hosted South Northumberland on Sunday. This was a
difficult opener and South North posted 207-9. Tynemouth’s reply was a valiant effort thanks
to the rapidly maturing Richie Straughan scoring 42 but 3-18 from Robinson saw Tynemouth
fall just short of their target, all out for 195.
In the SG Wealth Management Northumberland League, Tynemouth’s third string travelled
to Riding Mill to play Old Record Players who inserted their visitors. Returning skipper Paul
Coates sent in his mature strike pair of Vince Howe and Tim Whiting who put on an
impressive 70 for the first wicket. Runs flowed freely until Howe was clean bowled for 14 by
Arun during an over ambitious moment with Tynemouth’s confidence high. Chris Fairley
followed almost immediately, also bowled by Arun who was finding some swing and
movement in the breezy conditions. Chad Koen came to the crease and helped to see off Arun
13-5-25-2 and Matt Planchant. Whiting went on to make a magnificent 109 (9 fours and 2
sixes), caught off Planchant in his second spell, illustrating the benefit of winter nets whilst
Koen quickly got to 51 with some big hitting (3 sixes and 3 fours) before failing to make it
home attempting a second run. The remainder of the innings was all about Euan Stenhouse and
his 33 not out (4 fours) whilst others around him fell to Douglas 2-37 and Planchant 2-59.
Tynemouth posted 273-7 off their 50 overs.
In reply, Old Record Players got off to an equally impressive start with Colin Quigley and
Planchant scoring freely off Steve Mordue and especially Koen. Mordue turned the screw with
some tighter deliveries and had the reward of Quigley caught by Koen for 21. Don Catley was
brought into the attack to join Mordue and the over rate increased whilst the scoring rate
dropped. Catley trapped Planchant lbw for 58 and then bowled Finkell for 8. Mordue
completed with 13-1-43-1 and on came young Jack Beaumont to bowl at great pace. Beaumont
accounted for four batsmen at least twice his age in a decisive spell of 7-0-38-4 with Arun 18
and Richardson 23 taking some advantage of the short boundary. The sixth wicket partnership
had to broken at the fifth catching attempt with Howe in the deep showing the others just
simply how! Fairley at the wicket took another sharp chance. Catley completed with 13-0-32-3
and Koen returned to improve to 7-0-38-4 whilst skipper Coates chipped in with a cameo 4-0-
21-1. The season started well for Tynemouth with maximum points as ORP were dismissed
in the 44th over for 185.

The Committee was saddened to learn of the passing last week of Joyce Morpeth aged
82. Joyce, for most of her life, was a stalwart supporter of the Club and quite famous for
her teas and hosting of meetings at her house. She succeeded her husband and former
Club President Alan by some three years. We are all indebted to the significant part of
both of their lives which were dedicated to Tynemouth Cricket Club, and indeed we are
indebted to all of the Morpeth family.
Joyce suffered an uncomfortable time for the past few years before being taken into
hospital the previous weekend from Willow Lodge suffering from an infection.
Apparently even a short time before her passing she was typically ‘chirpy’ despite her
difficulties.
A service of celebration of Joyce’s life is to be held at St. Columba’s United Reform
Church this Friday 30th April at 1:15 pm following a private family committal.
Donations may be sent to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation via Ryland Funeral
Services, Cullercoats, NE30 3ER.
RIP Joyce.

Team kit for the First X1 and Second X1 is now being made available. Both of these teams are
required to have Colour clothing for the 20/20 competitions so, as a club, we ordered sufficient
sets of kit for both teams. The pack contains one 20/20 top, one white playing shirt, one white
SS Jumper, and one cap. The cost of these is £50 per pack and we would be grateful if all First
and Second X1 players were to buy these from the club. Payment details will be made available
when the kit arrives. A "splash top" will also be made available at a later date.
For all other players who would like to order Tynemouth CC kit you can go online at CF
Sports and if you enter "Tynemouth" in the relevant search box you will be directed to their
page for our specific kit.
Questions should be directed to Graeme Hallam: Graeme.Hallam@googlemail.com .

THIS WEEK’S ALE is selected by Stewy for you:

MARSTON’S BOONDOGGLE (ABV 4.2%)
One of their Ringwood’s range of beers
AVAILABLE FROM FRIDAY

Tasting Notes: The name is taken from a

Scots/American word to mean 'work of
little value' or to us, a jolly! We can think of
nothing better than going for a Boondoggle
or two and enjoying this pale golden beer
with a light citrus aroma and delicious
fruity finish.

Repeated after great success last season; described

by some as the best pint they ever had at the club.
