NEW STAFF GRAVITATES TO OK-PSD

This being the first newsletter of the

recently formed Outokumpu Technology
Inc. Physical Separation Division (OKPSD), stands to inaugurate the
transformation of the past year.

OK-PSDs gravity product manager will

focus on new gravity separation products
while improving the existing products and
systems.

A few weeks ago we moved into our new

premises. We now enjoy having all of our
Jacksonville staff under one roof with a lot
of space to grow.
Superconducting
magnetics service offices remain in London
and in Brazil. We have a few staff members
in the Denver, Colorado, area, and our own
sales representatives in India, China and
Kazakhstan.
There was some
rationalization of the sales representation
through Outokumpu sales offices and the
20 plus agents around the world.
The Carpco and Inprosys names will not
disappear, but have been kept as product
trade names. In our business there is a
necessity for constant growth and
evaluation; operation-efficiency
enhancements have already begun. We
have initiated several new technical
developments, and the marketing team is
hard at work to introduce them to the
markets. New and improved products are
available and there will be at least two
more in 2002. A training seminar for
agents and representatives was held in
September in Jacksonville. A new general
brochure is published (please contact us
for a copy), our web sites are being updated
and consolidated and new product
brochures are next on the agenda. Our staff
is highly motivated and we look forward to
a banner year in 2002.
Our objective is to be the preferred global
mineral industry source for physical
separation equipment and integrated
process systems. Additionally, we intend
to remain the best supplier of electrostatic
separation equipment in some specialized
recycling areas.
Your cooperation is
sincerely anticipated and gratefully
acknowledged.
Truly Yours,

Bo Arvidson
President

Erik Spiller joins our team after a long

career in mineral processing, most recently
with a major North American engineering
company (The Washington Group,
formerly Raytheon Engineers). Previously
Erik held senior positions in Newmont,
Hazen Research and the Colorado School
of Mines Research Institute.
In 2002 you will see an improved
washwater spiral, an enhanced recovery
mineral sands spiral, and further
developments with density separation.
Erik is also Vice President Operations and
brings his leadership skills to OK-PSDs
executive management team.

WHAT DO SYNTHETIC RUTILE AND

GRINDING HAVE IN COMMON?
Along with Inprosys, Outokumpu
Technology acquired Lurgi Metallurgie
and Nordberg in 2001.
Lurgi brings metallurgical expertise
including Synthetic Rutile Technology to
the folds of the Outokumpu Umbrella,
while world class grinding mills and LIMS
(Low Intensity Magnetic Separation)
equipment come from Norberg.
With these new additions, Outokumpu
Technology advances further ahead of the
competition. Each of the Outokumpu
Technology Inc.s Divisions comes
together to create a scope of supply
unmatched by any other company in the
industry. Grinding, gravity, magnetic and
electrostatic separation techniques, to
flotation, thickeners, filters and automation
equipment are all available through
Outokumpu, enabling us to offer complete
separation solutions.

NEW GRAVITY CIRCUIT FOR IOC

The Physical Separation Division secured a contract to
further advance Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) in
their mineral processing.
At the time of the acquisition of IOC by North Mining of
Australia in 1999, the Physical Separation Division (OKPSD) was commissioned to conduct a metallurgical
audit of the gravity circuit. Although many of the
original cast iron Humphreys spirals had been replaced
earlier with new wash water spirals, few other
fundamental changes had been made. One of OK-PSDs
basic recommendations was that IOC consider the
Floatex Density Separator and its potential to classify
the gravity circuit feed. (This had been very successfully
employed at LKAB in Sweden a few years earlier.)
Interest by IOCs concentrator metallurgist, Martin
Nevens, lead to a test model 460 Floatex installation at
their pilot plant. The machine, which can treat about
4t/h iron ore fines, created coarse and fine particle
products. The resulting coarse ore could then be readily
upgraded using the existing washwater spirals, but
Nevens was anxious for even further improvement.

By the summer of 2001, the first of three concentrator

lines was installed. Once fully equipped, the plant will
treat up to 6000 t/h of iron ore fines, upgrading final
concentrates to at least 67% Fe.

UKRAINE TO PRODUCE EVEN MORE ILMENITE

We heard of other suppliers spirals delaminating and
bubbling up, comments Irshansk Engineer.
To mineral sands producer Irshansk GOK in Ukraine,
high wear resistant equipment is critical. Irshansk
ilmenite is very coarse and angular.
This, in
combination with an ambient temperature range of
minus 20 to plus 30C, creates a challenge to
equipment.
In 1996, Irshansk decided to upgrade their concentrate
and mineral separation plant to produce ilmenite
specifically for the export market.
OK-PSD was
recruited to supply a number of spirals, Floatex density
separators, induced-roll magnets, and high-tension
electrostatic machines to achieve the necessary
ilmenite grade and recovery.

Trials of OK-PSDs new Carpco washwaterless spirals,

both in Florida and in IOCs pilot plant, showed great
promise for treating the fine ore from the Floatex. The
positive locking feature on the new model HC8000
spiral splitter allowed for retained positioning during
cleaning. Use of the new model could lead to great
savings in water consumption in the order of 4000 m3/h
as well as make operation simpler.
In April of 2000, OK-PSD was awarded a contract for
the supply of HC8000 spirals, and a number of Floatex
Density Separators (also added to their magnetite
regrinding process) for the new IOC gravity circuit.
The improved IOC process, a radical departure from old
practice, eliminated the need for hydrocyclones to
densify spiral feed. This elimination, in turn, reduced
pumping requirements (pumps and power) further
simplifying plant operation.

The overwhelming success of the OK-PSD upgrade

created another need for Irshansk GOK; they required
even more product to meet customer demands. Late in
2001, OK-PSD was awarded a contract to supply 280
MC-7000, HC-8000, and LC-3700 spirals to expand the
Ukraine plant. The first half will be sent at the end of
February 2002, with the rest to follow in April. After the
commissioning in mid 2002, Irshansk GOK will be able
to produce over 250,000 t/a of sulphate and chloride
route ilmenite.
We chose Carpco spirals because of their superior
performance. They have been a reliable performer
under very harsh conditions. We heard of other
suppliers spirals delaminating and bubbling up. This
has never happened with Carpco spirals, praises
Irshansk Engineer, Vladimir Bereza.

MAGNETIC PULL ON THE MARKET

OK-PSD offers the mineral industry the most
comprehensive line of Magnetic Separators.
With the addition of both Norberg and Inprosys, OKPSD has a complete line of magnetic separators that

LEADING THE SUPPLY AND MANUFACTURE OF

INDUSTRIAL HGMS
A High-Temperature Superconductor (HTS) based
reciprocating HGMS system has just been completed
and detailed trials will soon be conducted.
The world of High-Gradient Magnetic Separation
(HGMS) is small, and system
suppliers need to be closely
aligned to cryogenic
engineering technologies to
take the best possible
advantage of future
technologies. Research and
development in this area is
not an easy undertaking due
to development costs and
the many technology options to be explored.
OK-PSD, in partnership with experts in superconductivity and kaolin processing, has taken on the
HGMS challenge. The first phase of development was a
success.
With the completion of the HTS pilot size HGMS, OKPSD is now entering into the next phase of research and
development. An industrial scale conduction cooled
HGMS magnet system project
is underway.
Being able to offer either
energy-efficient Cryofilter
reciprocating systems or large
volume switched mode systems
gives OK-PSD a unique
perspective on the technologies
for the future and these
developments are paving the
way for new HGMS systems.

The Demanufacturing of Electronic

Equipment for Reuse and Recycling
(DEER2) was developed by the DOD's
National Defense Center for Environmental
Excellence (NDCEE) to investigate, test and
deploy technology upgrades in the public
and private sectors.
A new contract, operated by CTC, was
initiated for the development, application
and dissemination of advanced
environmental technologies.
In 1999, OK-PSD was called upon to
perform test work and develop a
flowsheet for the recycling of electronic
scrap from the defense department and
turn it into usable resin products.
OK-PSD joined with RRT, an engineering
company who have built many recycling
plants, to accumulate the necessary
equipment for developing the CTC plant.
The process will focus on Outokumpu's
new T-Stat Triboelectric technology.
Although a relatively small part of our
business, the metals and plastics processing
markets are growing quickly. OK-PSD will
be applying its proven process skills in
other recycling projects.
