Tiruvarur District was formed in January 1997 after carving out nine
blocks from neighboring Nagapattinam District and one block from adjoining
Thanjavur District.

Tiruvarur District is a compact District with all the Taluk/block

headquarters well connected with Tiruvarur. The District is predominantly
agricultural oriented and is mainly depending on water supply from Cauvery
River.

1268094 of which 627616 are Males and 640478 are Females. The 2011
Population Census reveals that 960036 persons are Literate that is 75.70%
of total Population and of which 5,10,125 are Males, 4,49,899 are Females
and 12 Others. The literacy rate of this district is 75.70%. The total electors
of the District is 874337 of which 440010 are Males, 434322 are Females
and 5 Others.
