Part II: Architectural Style

The Second Empire also known as Mansard Style architectural style
Can be traced to France during the reign of Napoleon III. Dominating
the second half of the 19th century. Decorative details include iron
cresting on the roof, heavy bracketed cornices, quoins and
balustrades. The roofs were almost always slate shingles with an
occasional decorative pattern. The reconstruction of Paris in the
Second Empire style had a major impact on building design

Relaxing, simple, clean, with dark rustic elements and an occasional touch
of color will create the perfect space for the Sparks. With natural light pouring in
from the emphasized architectural historical windows. An open floor concept being
the focal point to merge the Scandinavian and Modern design perfectly. Creating
contrast with the light wall and medium wooden floors. Neutral palettes and wood
accents will create a sense of connection to nature and the outdoors giving the
client their need for a Scandinavian yet modern design. Rustic beams separating
the rooms within the open floor plan. Black accents and geometric patterned rugs
to create some visual interest. Simple clean contrast with textures and dark
accents. Neutral colors, grays ,tan, white and black with pops of color with darker
greens and orange will create a modern, comfortable and relaxing design.

The importance of codes in Residential design is not only to keep any occupants safe but these codes are
important with in residential design addresses societys concerns, including public health and safety and
environmental protection of the consumer, general public and the owners and occupants of the residential
building. Being informed about these codes will help an interior designer recognize when something needs to be
updated to the new code and helps understand how to bring things up to code. This will allow the interior designer
to inform their clients correctly and help reach the overall design goals. Knowing these codes will ensure that the
job will be done correctly the first time will ultimately save money and avoids having to do the job over.
Although no code can eliminate all risks it can reduces risks to an acceptable level. Codes are constantly updated,
some yearly and some every 3 years to reflect the environment changes. Knowing these codes as an Interior
designer will save time and will make for a smooth process when creating a final design for your client. As a
designer informing yourself and keeping up to date with codes will make for a last stressful experience for the
designer and the client. Interior designers should read and reread code to make sure they are understood
correctly.

Electrical
For codes to be effective, an understanding and cooperative relationship must exist between building
officials and the groups they servehomeowners, developers, urban planners and designers, and
others in the construction industry. Codes must therefore be responsive to the governments need to
protect the public. (ICC)
Electrical code compliance ensues multiple facets of importance in the field of residential design. With
electrical engineering being a demanding and challenging industry, consistency is critical. Electrical
codes outline standards for proper execution. The NFPA 70 is the worlds most widely used and
accepted code for electrical installation. (Fox Valley) Without compliance and codes, one electrical
design may differ to the next. This would cause confusion and inconsistencies for electrical engineers
and electricians from project to project. Following codes allows each application to be fluent with the
rest.
Electricity is a valuable resource, but when not properly handled, the energy can backfire causing
damage to a structure and/or injury to those inhabiting the space. It is imperative to follow codes to
safeguard any new or existing structure from the potential of any electrical fault or calamity. This
includes proper wiring and circuiting, incorporating ground fault circuit interruption, and efficient layout
of outlets throughout the design.
Electrical codes also allow for accessible outlets. Lighting outlets should be present in every bathroom,
hallway, stairway, attached garage, and detached garage with electric power, and to illuminate outdoor
entrances and exits. (ICC) This provides proper pathfinding throughout the design to prevent injury to
persons moving through or around the space.
In conjunction with other building codes, incorporating proper execution of electric codes will increase
efficiency, reduce risk of injury or damage, and provide accessibility for future service.

Justification
The process for developing my design concept was based on the Starks profile and their need for a modern
Scandinavian design. I wanted to make sure I had a clear understanding of my clients needs and I did some
research and used my prior knowledge about Scandinavian and modern design. I reviewed online stores that
focused on modern design like Allmodern. I research Scandinavian designers and their work. I look at pictures
of designed interiors and studied the furniture used for these designs. I made sure to review these images
whenever making any selections for fabrics, furniture and finishes. I also researched art work and accessories
used throughout my research. I wanted to make sure that my clients Robb and Brienne got exactly what they
wanted from a design standpoint. I wanted to create a space that reflected modern Scandinavian design. I used
white as my base color so that all the art work that would be displayed wouldnt look out of place. I used
artwork that felt like the outside was brought into the home. I used light colors like gold, yellow and white to
create a relaxing environment. With different shades of grey and green. I also took the time to research
wooden floors you would find in a Scandinavian home. Which gave me the idea to use a lighter heart oak wood
that is easy to maintain and can withstand a lot. When working on my schematic plans it led to me revising a
lot of my design decisions, as far as closets and furniture placing. I wanted to make sure I gave enough space
on the floor landing by the stairs when leaving the apartment so I changed the seating area around. Keeping
the way humans will function in the space comfortable in mind. Shopping online was a long process, making
sure Im keeping the clients budget in mind along with their taste. Using CAD was important as well, creating
different floor plans making sure I choose something that worked best for the client. Having to use Cad,
researching interiors, selections, furniture, fabrics, lighting, art, accessories and being able to communicate my
design concept with everyone was a bit of a challenge but I believe it has prepared me for the future and
taking steps to becoming an interior designer.
Reflection
This course has helped me awaken my creative side again. I feel like this is the reason I really would like to be
an Interior Designer. Being able to select finishes, fabrics, and fixtures based on a clients design preference and
seeing it all come together was great. Even though I wish I would have chosen a little more to add to the rooms
designed Im still very pleased with the end results. Creating a concept off of what I know, the clients needs
and a modern Scandinavian design was a challenge but a growing experience. Using Auto Cad was great for me
because I really enjoy the programming when my computer is working. I enjoyed learning new things about the
program and becoming more experienced with it and I know it will be very beneficial to me in the future and in
upcoming classes. I enjoyed learning about the different building and the architectural details of building one.
Overall I think this class was great and really opened up my creative side again. It made me realized that
residential design is where my heart is and it made me hopeful about my career as an interior designer.
