History of Track and Field

Jacie McMahon

By Chloe Sierks

Our junior high and high school track teams

have officially began their seasons that last well
into May. As hard as it is to believe, the sport of
track and field has been around a lot longer than
your grandparents glory days that you have to
hear about at every family gathering. Whether at
the high school, college, or even Olympic level,
track and field is a sport that is admired internationally and has made an appearance in almost
all cultures.
For those who dont know, track and field is
a sport that combines various athletic activities
based around the basic skills of running, jumping
and throwing. The name track and field generally
derived from the layout of the stadium that hosts
these events. Many historians believe that track
and field, or sports relative to track and field, was
among one of the first sporting competitions primarily in Greece.
Countries all over the world slowly began to

have track and field competitions in their schools,

colleges, and in military organizations. But it
wasnt until the establishment of our modern
Olympics in the 19th century that track and field
really began to take off.
Over the next few decades, track and field became the most prominent game in the Olympics
to spectators and to participants. But as it developed into a world-renowned sport, track and field
athletes ran into some conflicts.
For many years track and field was only classified as an amateur sport and if anyone was caught
accepting training money or cash prizes, he or she
could be banned from the sport and have previous
awards stripped.
Track and field is not just a beloved sport in our
community, but all over the world as well. During the Summer Olympics viewers always seem
eager to watch the track competitions and many
Olympic track stars are known worldwide.
