Livin and Talkin

Edgar Guest wrote, It takes a heap o livin in a house

to make it home. As we participate in the Body of Christ,
the Family of God, we are blessed to call the Lords house
our local church home. Of course, the Lord does not dwell
in temples made by hands, as deacon Stephen told the
Sanhedrin. The church universal is more often referred
to in scripture than the church local. We have the joy of
pursuing a heap o holy livin in Gods House.
God uniquely desires that His church be a happy home; yet
too many often go away to visit the deer-blind, NASCAR race, football game,
or other interesting pursuits and leave Gods house bereft of the Bride. When
you are here, God still doesnt mind hearing our off-key singing. He prefers late
arrival at His House to casual disregard. Perhaps more of us need to realize that
our absence is felt and our presence is needed. You need your place around
the table of the Word in His House.
Yes, this is that time of the season that I dread, when more cars seem to be
traveling north on I-75 than motoring south, when suddenly we are about 1,000
people less than in February. If you are one of our folks who understandably
would rather see your kids and grand-kids up north than hear this poor preacher,
realize that you will be missed. Pray for us while you are away. Come back as
soon as you can; watch us online; but always remember that your presence is
not a nuisance and that your absence is noticed.
It also takes a heap o talkin to make a house a home. Your prayers in this place
are not a dripping faucet to God like the nagging wife in Proverbs 27:15. We
and God delight in your prayers no matter how deep or simple. Dont give Him
the cold shoulder. Persist in your petitions.
Too many in Gods family develop spiritual laryngitis, failing to talk to Him about
people or to talk to people about God. We can easily run around like tormented
dust devils to studies, meetings, practices, and so forth. We think that we will
choke or croak if we say out loud what the Lord means to us. But let the
redeemed of the Lord say so (Psalm 107:2).
While Ecclesiastes warns about saying too much in Gods presence with
flippancy and ritualized formality, our tendency is to say too little. Though
President Lincoln once said, It is better to remain silent and be thought a
fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt, that should be taken in
moderation. Jesus said that if His disciples ceased to praise Him, the rocks
would cry out (Luke 19:40). It may even seem foolish to unbelievers. Lets also
not forget to speak words of encouragement to one another, whether verbally,
by email, text, or letter. Therefore, it takes a heap o holy livin and talkin to bless
others and honor the Lord in your home church.
