Background of the case

This case is about a product design company named frog, which is known for its unique process of
designing a product. frog has so far been immensely successful with big firms like Disney, Apple and
AT&T.
This case will help us analyze the frogs product design process as well as whether this success can be
replicated across all products and across all industries. Our team will also analyze the advantages and
disadvantages of following frogs approach towards product design and lay down some basic best
practices that can be followed universally for successful product design.

Business Problem
This case deals with the problems related to product design and the risks and challenges associated with
introducing a new product in the market. One of the major challenges besides the fact that the entire
process is time immensely cost incentive, is that it is highly time sensitive. Companies have to ensure
that the product is introduced in the market at the correct time. Another major factor that contributes
to the risk is fulfilling customer requirements. Many a times, the customers are not fully aware of their
requirements. In case the requirements are evident, it is sometimes not possible to fulfill all of them
within the budget, pricing and time constraints. This is the main reason why the success rate of product
innovation product is low.

SWOT
Given below is the SWOT analysis of Frog performed by our team:
Strength:
Tried and tested method.
High customer involvement ensures that the product will be well-received by the customers.
Low development cycle time ensures that the products hit the market when the demand exists.
Low cost prototype development.
Weakness:
Customers can be unsure of what they want.
The prototypes are not functionally tested. Hence, delivering the functionality is not feasible within the
constraints of the customer requirements, budget and pricing. The entire design process has to be
reiterated.
Opportunities:
3D printing will make prototyping cheap.
The companies can introduce the product in the market at the right time due to the rapid design phase.

The design process in generic enough to cater to products of different industry. The client list of frog is a
testimony to this fact.
Threats:
Communication gap exists between customer and client.
Customer demands vary according to demographics, geography and technological exposure.

Alternative Strategy
These strategies can be adopted by firms who wish to invest in product innovation.
Alternative 1:
Focus on Collaborative innovation by involving customer feedback from early stages.
Alternative 2:
Focus on rapid prototype development by investing in 3D printing technologies.

Recommendation
Our team recommends joint implementation of the strategies for successful product innovation. The
advantages of the strategy are that the design process is cheaper and faster. It will help the companies
be in touch with the requirements of the customers since the customers play a key role in making the
product a big success. This strategy will increase the chances of making the new product a success.

Risks
The risk associated with this approach is that there is still no way to ensure whether the functionality
would be implemented in the designed product. It will require considerable understanding of the
technical aspects of the product by the designer so that he has an idea of the feasibility of the design.
