The headquarter of International Union of Police Associations is

in downtown Sarasota, Florida. As a member of AFLCIO and
trade union , donations given to the group are not tax deductible.
The association is recruit professional solicitors to raise the money.
Telemarketers call people around the country and tell them that their
donations will be spent for providing financial assistance to families of
fallen police officers who were members of the union.
The association also provides scholarships to the students who seek to get
degrees in law enforcement.

But during the past decade, of the $ 57 million in donations given by the
public , professional solicitors were paid more than 72 cents of every
dollar .
About $ 28,000 per year which is less than half of one percent - was used
for survivor benefits.
Recent campaigns have been even more worse. In 2011, $ 8.1 million were
raised and professional fundraisers kept about 92 percent of
it . IUPA recorded approximately $ 650,000. The association spent $
25,000 upon its motive , giving $ 15,000 in student scholarships, $ 5,000
to the foundation of a disabled child outside Sarasota and $ 5,000 in death
benefits.
Rich Roberts is the public information officer for IUPA. He said
the organization will continue to hire more professional solicitors.
Roberts further said "Although the percentage we receive are not what we
want but it is money that we would not otherwise support our agents" .
IUPA is one of five groups on the list of Times/ CIR. It is ,under the IRS
code, tax-exempt. But it is not a traditional 501c (3) charity. These groups
still have to register with the state authorities to solicit donations, but fact is
that the donations are not tax deductible.
To raise money, all five heavily rely on professional telemarketing
companies.
