Communication and Language

We will develop the language we use for

communication by sustaining attentive listening,
responding to what we have heard with relevant
comments, questions or actions. We will enjoy
listening to and using spoken and written language,
and readily turn to it in our play and learning. We will
extend vocabulary, especially by grouping and naming,
by exploring the meanings and sounds of new words.
We will develop our confidence to speak to others
about their own wants and interests.

Literacy
In daily training we will continue to develop our
Sounds and Letters. In our Garden centre we will
attempt writing for different purposes, including
recounts of what we have done, descriptions and
instructions. We will find out about plants, showing
an understanding of how information can be found
in non-fiction texts to answer questions about
where, who, why and how, knowing that information
can be retrieved from books and computers. We
will share stories including Jaspers Beanstalk,
Titchs Garden and The Tiny Seed.

We will continue to cook and taste foods linked to our

topic and other healthy foods too. Please note we are
only able to do this with a voluntary contribution of
50p each week. Thank you for your support!

Mathematics
We will use the context of the garden centre, plants,
flowers and butterflies to support our number work.
We will use familiar objects and common shapes to
create and recreate patterns and build models and
use mathematical language to describe solid (3D)
objects and flat (2D) shapes. We will continue to
develop our knowledge of numbers and our ability to
recognise, count, order, write and use numbers up
to 20. We will use the vocabulary involved in adding
and subtracting. We will also look at capacity and
weight and order items by these factors.

Physical Development
In our weekly P.E session and when outside we will
gain more control over an object pushing, patting,
throwing, catching or kicking it. We will talk about
the importance of keeping healthy, and those things
which contribute to this and begin to recognise the
changes that happen to our bodies when we are
active. In the classroom we will handle tools,
objects, construction and malleable materials safely
and with increasing control and use a range of small
and large equipment.

Understanding the World

Gardeners in Willow Tree Garden Centre will learn
about how living things grow and change by looking at
plants and butterflies. We will find out about, and
identify, some features of living things and events we
observe, showing an awareness of change. We ask
appropriate questions about why things happen and
how things work, looking closely at plants and
butterflies and comment on similarities, differences,
patterns and change. We will find out about and
identify features in the place we live and the natural
world.

This half term Willow Class will become

Willow Tree Garden Centre and the
children will become gardeners! We will
be working for Regina Flowerton a
world famous explorer. She will need us
to set up a new garden centre here.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Through our day to day working, circle times

and PSED sessions we will further develop
our understanding of what is right, what is
wrong, and why, discussing consequences.
We will continue to be interested, excited and
motivated to learn and will encourage each
other to select and use activities and
resources independently, whilst also
developing our ability to maintain attention,
concentrate and sit quietly which will be
activity appropriate. We will work as part of a
group or class, taking turns and sharing fairly,
following rules which have been agreed. We
know why we do this!

Expressive Arts and Design

Garden centre workers will respond in a variety of ways
to what we see, hear, smell, touch and feel and create
constructions, collages, paintings and drawings. We will
create flower pictures, models and symmetrical butterfly
images. We will explore colour, texture, shape, form and
space in two or three dimensions. We will look at famous
artworks which depict landscapes and plants/flowers and
discuss what we see as inspiration for our own art work.
We will use our imagination in art and design, music,
dance, imaginative and role-play and stories.
