1 General
1.1

General Overview
SOCs DG addressed to the attendees the strategic importance
of Zubair 2 crude oil pumping station for Iraq oil export
objectives. As part of the station, the #4 main turbopump units
are the most critical equipment which require immediate
attention to assure a continuous & reliable pumping of crude
oil.

1.2

Meeting Objectives
The objective of the meeting was to examine and define a
complete fast-track rehabilitation & control upgrade plan to
assure reliability & availability of the 4 main GE turbopump
units as per original design conditions.

1.3

Main Pumps Operating Conditions.

Currently the pumps are working on an operating point which is
different from design condition as follows:
a) Capacity: 6000m3/h
b) Discharge Pressure: 35kg/cm2
c) Suction pressure: 5.5kg/cm2
d) Speed: 90% of Gas turbine max. running speed
Assuming that this new operating point will become the normal
duty of the pump, GE will conduct free of charge a feasibility
study to assess if the existing pumps as they are can fulfil the
new duty or suggest adequate modifications. GE will issue a
feasibility study report.

Definition of scope.
On the basis of Site Survey Report here attached, dated 3
February 2012, the parties had an extensive discussion on the
scope of activities relevant to the following equipment related
to turbopump units TP-2A/B/C/D:
- Gas Turbine Package, including Starting system and
Auxiliaries,
- Gas Turbine Filter House and Inlet Air Duct,
- Gas Turbine Exhaust and Stack,
- Fire & Gas Detection System,
- Fire Fighting System,
- Load Gear,
- Main Pump,
- Instruments installed on gas turbine and centrifugal pump,
- Control Systems,
- Electrical Equipment.

2.2

Specific Technical Issues Highlighted by SOC:

Since 1991 the units have not operated regularly.
Specifically units A&D are not running and require
immediate attention to become serviceable and
operable.
On units B & C the following issues have been reported
by SOC:
- Starting System Clutches are engaging & disengaging not
properly on all units while on one unit the clutch is
damaged
- Starting Turbines go on overspeed on all units.
- Gas turbine loss of flame reported on all units during
start-up and operation
- High Vibration on Main Pumps and gear on all units.
As load increases to Q=6000m3/h, the vibration
increases to trip level.
- Unit C Bearing n.4 drain oil leak
- Main pump seal leakage

3 Rehabilitation Program

3.1

GE to submit to SOC a recommended rehabilitation plan

including the following:
a) Suggested actions and workscope definition
GE
b) Materials: spare parts, rotors, special tools.

3.2
SOC requested GE and Baghdad Co. to conduct a site visit to
collect further information on the units that are running.
3.3

3.4
Following deep discussion between parties, given the
complexity of the project and based on the active discussion
between the parties, SOC is requesting an integrated EPC
project approach to minimize unforeseen events or
contingencies during execution.
3.5
SOC has instructed GE to focus and develop the maintenance
program only on the main oil turbopumps unit and not on the
booster compressors or the Frame3 GE turbogenerator.
3.6
SOC will provide GE with CD including the complete list SOC
of
spare parts relevant to the turbopump package available on
stock in SOC warehouse. SOC to provide this document within.
3.7
Contract PRJ-10-4128 Control Upgrade of Zubair 2 main
turbopump units. With reference to SOC letter ref. E195, dated
12/03/2012, SOC has requested Baghdad Company to act
quickly to fulfill contractual procedures enabling L/C
establishment.
