Tynemouth’s Sunday 3rd XI set off to a very cold and windy Sunderland. Sunderland’s
Skipper ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ won the toss and inserted Tynemouth to bat first. Openers
Vince Howe and new skipper Ben Richardson put 72 on the board before Howe was stumped
for 39. Next into bat was Chris Fairley who set off at a very fast rate in which Fairley and
Richardson put on 32 before Richardson was yet again out on 49, caught and bowled by
Deverson! This led to Fairley and Richie Straughan putting on a quick 200 partnership with
Fairley finishing on 108 not out and R.Straughan 102 not out; a fantastic performance on the
batting front! Tynemouth finished with a massive score of 304-2 off their 45 overs. Pick of
the bowlers for Sunderland was young spinner Deverson 9-1-48-1.
In reply, Sunderland’s openers didn’t get off to a very promising start with ‘Benton Massive’
Ryan Bailey taking the first wicket aided by an excellent catch from debutant Lee Reed. The
following over Conor Lonnberg comprehensively bowled B. Mitchell for a duck. Sunderland
was now struggling on 13-2. However opener W. Lewis and P. Smith put on a quick fire 30
before Louis Storey sent both of them back to the pavilion. Sunderland then didn’t have much
luck as a middle order collapse occurred with man of the moment Richardson claiming 4
wickets in quick succession. This led to Sunderland being 125-8 before Ryan Bailey took
another wicket by the help of a catch by ‘Bobby George’ at mid-wicket. From Sunderland’s 45
overs they only managed to make 131-9 with Tynemouth winning by 173 runs. Tynemouth’s
bowling figures: Lonnberg 9-4-13-1, Bailey 8-3-9-2, C Koen 9-2-22-0, L Storey 8-1-25-2,
Taylder 6-0-26-0 and Richardson 6-2-25-4.
