THANK YOU FROM FR. CHARLIE
Hello All,
Thanks again for all the wonderful support and prayers. I
got home from the hospital late Monday afternoon. It
was a long 12 days. My sister Betty Ann and her husband
Cliff came out to be with me, and the Portland Paulists,
Fr. Michael, Fr. Bill and Fr. Jim were a big presence and
support along with my Astoria cousins, Joe, Tommie, and
Geoff Brunick and their families.
The surgery itself was much longer than expected - took
over 10 hours. Luckily, most of the tissue in my type of
cholangio carcinoma had not yet become cancerous, was
still in early change mode, but it was an extensive and
time consuming process to go after it all. One
unfortunate side effect of the length of time and for the
surgery was a lot of extra stress resulting in a minor heart
attack during the surgery. It is also a fairly large wound
area with a lot of cut and scraped surfaces which will take
some time to heal. Next is getting on with that healing
and in a week or two putting together the plan for chemo
follow-up.

A WORD FROM SERVANT OF GOD ISAAC HECKER,

FOUNDER OF THE PAULIST FATHERS
By a clearer insight and a more exact appreciation of the economy of Divine
Grace they will bring out more distinctly the great practical truth which underlies
the whole supernatural order: that there can be no act tending towards our true
destiny which is not preceded by a movement of divine grace. [ On the Mission
of New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, and you
believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP at
202-269-2519 and tell him your story.

SENIOR GATHERING
Our next Senior Gathering will be Tuesday, May 3, 12-2pm in Carvlin Hall. We
begin with a potluck lots of great food! This month our speaker will be Simone
Carter, Trauma Prevention Coordinator, representing the Trauma Nurses Talk
Tough program. Take the Right Steps will help us identify possible mobility
concerns at home, in the car, shopping, how to fall and what to do next, how to
catch yourself, & who checks on you daily? Please plan to attend and share our
potluck and learn from our guest speaker. Bring a dish to share and bring a
friend. Dont cook? Feel free to stop by the deli of your favorite store for a treat
to share.

Pastoral Corner
Greetings!
In our First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles we hear about Paul and Barnabas traveling into various areas to tell
people about the miracle of Jesus. Some of these areas were not always welcoming and often they barely escaped
with their lives. And even when Paul helped people by miracles of healing, often the officials would accuse him of
being evil and run him out of the area. Or---threaten to kill them. This re-cap today, however, is a witnessing story
where Paul and Barnabas are re-visiting some of the successful towns where they had visited before and the
communities are still growing. This selection was chosen for todaymost likelyto reflect the glorified Jesus (in
todays Gospel) who continues to live through us----his disciples.
Our Second Reading is from the Book of Revelation which is believed to have been written not by the apostle/Gospel
writer John (someone borrowed his name for authority) but by a Jewish Christian who fled Palestine at the time of
the rebellion against Rome (66-70 A.D.). Maybe someone---refugee like todaywanting to return to a better home,
to a better government, a peace-filled life where they could live their culture and religious beliefs. That would be the
new Jerusalem. A place made holy by Gods dwelling with the human race. This Apocalyptic writing talks about a
future to come without persecution. No one knows when that will be but the importance of this style of writing is to
encourage us to remember that Jesus said the world can be a better place if we follow his example. A good place to
start would be the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy (the Popes theme for this year!), Catholic Social Teaching,
and of course receiving Communion
Like last week, todays Scripture comes from the Gospel of John. The scene that we hear described takes place at the
last Supper of Jesus and his apostles. This selection was probably chosen for today (even though Easter was 5 Sundays
ago) to remind us that Now ---today--we are the witnesses---the disciplesthe examplesthe everyday people--who reflect the glory of Jesus and God the Creator. And we do this by the way we treat each other. The way we
follow the instruction given in this Gospel selection: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should
love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
To love as God the Creator loves us daily.
This type of love is shown in service and sacrifice because we want to glorify Jesus. It is difficult to choose to love
in many situations---but we can certainly try.
Deo Gratias,
Barbara Marie Harrison

PAULIST PHOTOS
Do you have photos of the Paulists, present and past? If
you would like to share them with the community, you
can forward them to Rose, rosew@stphillipneripdx.org,
or bring them to the office and they can be scanned into
the computer and returned to you. We want to put
together an album or memory book to thank them for
their service to our community for over 100 years.

FOOD PANTRY
Remember to bring items for the panty often to help keep
it stocked. All non-perishable items plus personal hygiene
items, toilet paper and paper towels. Single serve items
for the Grab-N-Go bags and gallon bags, spoons, napkins,
hard candies & mints, are helpful items for those with no
storage.

BINGO

EMAIL PRAYER TREE

Our next bingo afternoon will be Sunday, May 29,

12-3pm in Carvlin Hall. Mark your calendar now
and plan on joining us for an afternoon of fun,
friends and goodies. If you have items to donate
for prizes, bring them with you to add to our prize
table.

The email prayer tree has 29 people who pray daily

for your concerns and requests. When we receive
your request it is emailed to the Prayer Tree. If you
would like to join the Prayer Tree or if you have a
request, contact barbarah@stphilipneripdx.org.

PARISH REGISTRATION
Are you registered in the parish? Just giving
stewardship by check does not give us complete
information. It is important for sacramental history,
emergency contacts, volunteering for ministry,
events and for program development. Forms are in
the rack in the foyer or you can contact the office.
Also if there have been changes: births, adoption,
new phone numbers, address, email or any other
personal changes, please fill out a form and write
update on it. This insures that we can
communicate with you and reduces the amount of
return postage we pay out.
