Course Objective
At the end of the course, students will be able to:

Evaluate and Implement 1D and 2D filter design methods.

Design and apply edge detection, image restoration, image compression, image
segmentation and image matching methods.

Apply various image processing techniques appropriate for practical applications.

Demonstrate a high level of practical ability in the specification and design of image
processing systems.

Develop and implement software to demonstrate various image processing application.

Identify and evaluate alternative solutions to engineering problems related to Digital


Image Processing.

Lossless compression: Variable length coding, LZW coding, Bit plane

Lossy Compression: Transform coding Wavelet coding, Basics of
Image compression standards: JPEG, MPEG,Basics of Vector
quantization.
IMAGE SEGMENTATION AND REPRESENTATION
Edge detection, Thresholding, Region Based segmentation, Boundary
representation: chair codes, Polygonal approximation, Boundary
segments, boundary descriptors: Simple descriptors, Fourier
descriptors , Regional descriptors, Simple descriptors, Texture.

Instructional Method and Pedagogy:

L
ectures will be conducted with the aid of multi-media projector,
blackboard, OHP etc. Assignments based on course contents will be
given to the students at the end of each unit/topic and will be evaluated
at regular interval
Minimum five experiments shall be there in the laboratory related to course
contents
Minimum six tutorials which includes solution of minimum five computer programs
in each head
