PRACTICAL 7
OBJECTIVE:
1. To produce vegetation density map using Normalized Difference
Vegetation Indices (NDVI)
IN THIS PRACTICAL YOU WILL LEARN TO DO FOLLOWING:
Able to:
1. Calculate NDVI using Landsat image
2. Assess the vegetation density based using NDVI
3. Produce vegetation density map
STEP:
Part A: Calculating the NDVI using EASI Modeling in Focus
1. First, Open Focus program > From the File menu, click Open and choose
the image.
2. From the Layer menu, select Add Layer Wizard > select RGB > Next >
select 5> 4 > 3 and Click Finish.
3. In the Focus toolbar, click the Enhancements arrow and select Linear
4. From the Tools menu, select EASI Modeling. The EASI Modeling window
opens.
5. From the Input File, select image.pix
6. In the EASI Modeling dialog box, enter the following model:
NDVI = (NIR band RED band)
(NIR band + RED band)
Where;

%i = empty channel for output (in 32 bit real channel)

%x = NIR band
%y = Red band

7. Click Run and Display Results.

8. The model will be executed and the results of NDVI were saved to output
channel in the image file and displayed in the Focus view area.
Part B: Pseudo-Color Tables (PCT) Editing
Result from NDVI is presented in the form of one single channel. The initial result
for NDVI was in grayscale colour. A single channel can be visualized with color
by assigning a psuedo-color table (PCT) to a grayscale image.
1. First, open file in Focus.
2. Click the Add Layer Wizard > Pseudocolored channel > click the
channel that you choose for EASI Modeling > Finish.
3. Then in the maps tree, right click at the file layer. Select Edit PCT.
4. PCT Editing window will opens.

5. Then, the index values were grouped according to desired range.

6. Each of the range was assigned with different color.
7. Click at the color at PCT Editing > choose the color at Basic Colors >
Click Apply
8. Repeat step 7 until all the colors at PCT Editing were group based on the
color range.
Part C: Vegetation Density Map
1. First, open file in Focus.
2. Click the Add Layer Wizard > Pseudocolored channel > click the
channel that you choose for EASI Modeling > Finish.
3. In the maps tree, right click at the file layer. Select Edit PCT. Each pixels
were assigned with different colors.
4. The color will be edited by using Edit PCT steps.
5. Edit your range values based on difference index range such as low,
medium and high vegetation density. The index that close to value 1
indicates high density of vegetation cover.
6. Click at the color at PCT Editing > choose the color at Basic Colors >
Click Apply
7. Repeat step 6 until all the colors for range values are in a group of
assigned index range.

UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA

1. State the range of NDVI values for vegetated and non-vegetated areas
2. Based on the produced NDVI map, visually analyze the effect of each index
values ranged.
3. Based on vegetation index map, justify each of assigned classes.
4. Discuss the distribution of vegetation area and relate with development at
study area
