KINTYR RENTAL OF 1636 Recording Names of Occupiers of Land The following Rentals were copied by me from transcripts made from the originals in the Argyll Charter Chest at Inveraray by Niall Diarmid 10th Duke of Argyll. They are at present, along with other material from the Argyll archives, on loan to Edinburgh ty, at the desire of the present Duke of Argyll. These Kintyre Rentals are interesting in several ways: (1) They show who the occupiers of the land were just before the Lowland influx in 1650- 1651; (2) they show that the tenants had written tacks, which they must have obtained either from the 7th Earl of Argyll (i. e., Archibald, succeeded 1584) or from his son Lord Kintyre, while he was in possession of the Kintyre lands They had passed after him (Lord Kintyre), to his half-brother Lord Lorne (i.e. Archibald Sth Earl, succeeded 1638, created Marquis 1641, executed 1661), and Lorne is seen in the Rentals to be calling for an examination of all the leases, as also of their surrender His intention would be either to grant new leases in his own name, or to withhold them from any tenants who he regarded as unsatisfactory. We conclude that the first introduction on the written lease, or tack in Kintyre, was in the early 17th century (Signed) A.
