COHESION AND COHERENCE: AN ANALYSIS OF AN

EXPLANATION TEXT OF A POSTGRADUATE STUDENT OF UNNES

Introduction
Writing is not an easy thing to do. It needs preparation and background knowledge of field
where writing will take place. As a result, errors are often found in people writing, including
postgraduate students of English department. Someone has ever done a study regarding to the
writing error done by English department students (nama peneliti dan judul). This study
realizes on the importance of cohesion and coherence in writing texts. What is meant by
coherence here is the clear relationship between sentences or paragraphs in the text and not
just like bundles of ideas on every sentence of paragraph. Besides, knowing how well
sentences on texts hang together is also important. It is related to the choice of words which
show relation between one another. Further, it is called as cohesion. The cohesion is
____________. Consequently, cohesion and coherence are must things to consider in writing

since it has many complexities.
The proficiency of the target language where writing takes place also contributes to
writing errors. It is because mostly when writing takes place on different language, the
grammatical structures, vocabularies and discourse of the language will also be different.
Further, if someone does not comprehend enough on that language mastery, sometimes
interference can occur. According to _______ study, it is revealed that interference of
language can occur since ones language mastery is not comprehensive enough. Regarding to
this problem, Silva (1993) as cited in Brown (2004) found several distinguishing attitudes
which contribute on writing differences between L1 and L2 learners, namely ______,

Seeing the above problem, the researcher is interested to conduct a study related to
cohesion and coherence analysis on an explanation text of a postgraduate student of UNNES.
It is aimed at knowing how well the sentences and idea arrangements done by a postgraduate
student since explanation text functions to describe phenomenon or phenomena which
requires writer to reveal how and why such phenomenon or phenomena occur (s). The
sentences and idea arrangements become a concern of this study because the arrangement of
those elements of writing will decide how well the writing is constructed to meet readers
expectation and aim or purpose of the text by it easy flow.
