Observing and Summarizing Text 2 Paragraphs on The Act of Writing

Haneen, good effort on your first full writing assignment. You have the start for two paragraphs.
However, you havent demonstrated that you clearly understand the difference between
describing a text (what text looks like) and summarizing at text ( what text says). You also need
to work on developing clearly structured paragraphs with direction (using a topic sentence) and
support. Most importantly, you MUST learn to understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.

Global concerns
1. Content
The two paragraphs fit the assignment. Youve made a start but
NQTY!
Observations of text: the paragraph provides a clear
description of what the text looks like. NEEDS WORK - What
concrete observations on what the text looks like can you make? In
observation stick to what the text looks like rather than what it. The
closer you observe your text, the easier it will be to quickly understand
the main ideas.
Summary of text The paragraph captures the main points of
the text. GOOD START You have done a good job of capturing most
of the main ideas in the text. You also present them in a clear and
logical way. However, you need to work on putting these ideas in your own

words or, when using the authors words, putting them in quotation marks and
clearly noting the page on which you found the text.

PLAGIARISM is not acceptable. Please review the Course Outline

and Course Expectations and Policies handouts to be sure you
understand what plagiarism is. If you choose to use someone elses
words, you must put them in quotation marks and cite the author and
source.

2. Organization
The paragraph begins with a strong topic sentence that
includes both a topic and controlling idea, providing clear
direction for the paragraph. NO Neither paragraph has a clear
topic sentence.
The paragraph contains several specific supporting sentences.
A START In the second, summary paragraph you have a set of
supporting ideas.
The paragraph ends with an appropriate concluding sentence.
