For young Moorestown resident William Will LaVan, gymnastics is something he really
loves. Hes done it for almost half
of his life, but up until he was 6,
he had never entered a state competition. At the age of 7, Will took
the opportunity to enter and rose
above and beyond for his first
state competition.
Will was the first-place winner

THE MOORESTOWN SUN APRIL 27MAY 3, 2016

in our opinion

Reform needed on health care, too

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Fixing only the insurance aspect of health care doesnt truly solve the problem
Dan McDonough Jr.

bamacare opponents had an I

told you so moment last
week, when the nations
largest health insurance provider,
UnitedHealthcare, said it plans to exit
most of the Affordable Care Act state
exchanges where it currently operates
by 2017.
The companys reasoning is quite
simple it is losing money ... a lot of
it. UnitedHealthcare said it lost $475
million in the state exchanges last
year and could lose another $500 million this year. Its tough to blame a
company for not continuing a moneylosing proposition such as this.
Those fighting Obamacare will say
this is an example of why the healthcare law doesnt work. Obamacare proponents will say adjustments to the
law and from insurers was bound
to happen.
But what everyone seems to overlook, and may have overlooked from
the beginning, is the problem is twofold: We need to fix not only the cost

and availability of health insurance

but that of health care as well.
Case in point: The price of Narcan,
a drug used to revive people who overdose on heroin, has soared recently.
The reason? No one is sure, but health
officials find it odd that as the drug is
becoming more prevalent, and more
states are using it, it is suddenly becoming more expensive to obtain.
New Jersey made the drug available
to all first responders in 2014, and
since that time, Narcan has been deployed almost 11,000 times in New Jersey.
Thats thousands of lives that were
saved from the drug.
New Jersey isnt the only state to
make Narcan readily available to first

responders, as more states are jumping on board as the success of it is

touted.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick
changed the states regulations to
make Narcan more widely available,
and soon after he did, the price of the
drug doubled in his state from $15 to
more than $30 per dose, according to
the states attorney general.
Its curious to see the cost increase
so rapidly as the drug gains more footing. Outsiders who dont know much
about the industry ourselves included would say it looks like a business
is taking advantage of a situation to
dramatically increase profits.
Maybe were wrong. Maybe there is
a reason that producing the life-saving
drug on a mass scale forces the cost of
doing so to rise substantially.
Or maybe its a small sign that the
problem with our countrys healthcare system isnt just that insurance is
out of whack; maybe health-care
providers need to be looked at as well.

CROP Walk raises money to fight hunger May 1

Event has participants walk to simulate how far some may need to walk for clean water, food
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Moorestown is once again doing its part
to end world hunger one step at a time with
the annual Moorestown CROP Walk.
CROP Hunger Walks are events in
which money is raised to combat world
hunger through participants walking one-,
three- or five-mile distances to simulate the
distances in which disadvantaged people
must walk in some countries for clean
water and food. Moorestown will be hold-

ing its annual CROP Walk on Sunday, May

1 at 1:30 p.m.
Hunger in the world is still a problem
(The CROP Walk) represents a joint effort of people who care about their fellow
man. We look forward to it each year, Mae
Trebing, Moorestown CROP Walk coordinator, said.
This annual event has been held in
Moorestown for more than four decades.
According to Church World Service, a joint
Christian ministry of 37 denominations
and coordinators of CROP Walks, more

than 2,000 communities in the United

States come together for more than 1,600
CROP Hunger Walks each year.
Some people have to walk miles to get
water or food, and sometimes children
have to do the walk. We walk because they
walk, Trebing said.
Walkers will sign in beginning at 1 p.m.
and leave from the Saint Matthews Lutheran Church promptly at 1:30 p.m. Water and
bathroom facilities will be available at

Budget will see tax cut for residents

As another years budget
process comes to a close, I am
very excited to announce that
Moorestowns 2016 budget will
not only hold the line on taxes,
but will actually see a tax cut for
our residents.
When Deputy Mayor Victoria

Napolitano and I joined the Town

Council, we pushed for a more
transparent and sustainable
budget process. Additional workshop sessions were held last year
and this year, with meetings held
at various times of day to allow
more residents the opportunity to
give their thoughts and input on
Moorestowns budget.
Councils review process goes
line by line, making sure that
every dollar is being spent responsibly while cutting any
wasteful spending. The township
and its various departments have
been encouraged by Town Council to seek and secure additional
grant funding for certain projects, making it possible to complete new projects without having
to raise taxes.
The Fiscal Year 2016 budget will
provide funding for our communitys fantastic recreation services,
continue to grow programming
for special needs individuals and
their families, fully fund the operations of our fantastic officers in
Chris

the
Moorestown
Police Department, utilize
the Open Space
Fund to care

open
spaces
and potentially
acquire additional
preserved lands,

water rates the lowest in our area.
We're accomplishing all of this
while reducing the tax burden,
building a healthy surplus and
giving our town the best bond rating in Burlington County. My hope
is that the 2016 budget begins a
trend where we can continually
deliver tax relief to our residents,
while responsibly planning for
our future and continuing to move

Camp Firefly to return

Moorestown Visiting Nurse Association childrens
camp provides safe, private format for expressing grief
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Eleven years ago, the Hospice
of Moorestown Visiting Nurse
Association was notified that a
free grief camp for children in
the area would be shutting down.
The group recognized the significant need for grief support for
local children, so it did everything it could to put together a
camp of its own.
Camp Firefly is now held every
summer at Camp Matollionequay
in Medford courtesy of the
Moorestown VNA.
There is a true and ongoing
need for grief support for children, Moorestown VNA Director
of Public Communications Kim
Plasket said. We have been fortunate to find many generous
donors and sponsors, both local
and national, who recognize the

benefits of this service and who

come back to support Camp Firefly each year.
The campsite is accessible for
all campers from Burlington,
Camden and Gloucester counties.
The facilities are just right for
an overnight camp, and the staff
has been very supportive of our
grief support activities, Plasket
said.
Team members go out of their
way to supplement the experience with true camp events such
as swimming and cookouts the
children enjoy.
All children who have lost a
parent, sibling or any special person through death and are seeking support to help cope with
grief are invited to join for no fee.
These campers spend the weekend in a caring, nurturing enviplease see CAMPERS, page 22

Community projects keeping parks clean

By KAHRA F. BUSS

Later this month, the senior

class at Moorestown High School
will be making good use of the
days that their underclassmen
peers will be taking PARCC testing. This years senior class will
use the testing days to perform a
community service project that
will encompass public parks and
fields and benefit all residents.
This service effort is the brainchild of department Director
Theresa Miller and staff member
Rich Corbin. When presented to
MHS administration, Principal
Drew Seibel and Vice Principal
Robert McGough were extremely
enthusiastic, agreeing that this
team-building, community service effort would be a great way for
the graduating class to give back
to the township. On April 26 and
27, high school seniors will be
split up to work at three of the
township parks to collect trash,
move mulch and plant flowers for
the season. From 9 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. on each day, the project will
allow seniors to give back to the
community that has supported
them through their time in the
Moorestown schools. The ongoing and strengthening relationship between MTPS and the Department of Parks & Recreation
can be seen in the amount of programming, the collaborative efforts on special events and the desire to provide all Moorestown
youth with a positive experience
in and out of school.
These projects are just the latest in a series of projects under-

Dept. of Parks & Recreation

The Moorestown Department
of Parks & Recreation is proud of
the numerous relationships it has
developed within the township.
From non-profit organizations, to
youth-based clubs and groups, the
department is pleased that its collaborative efforts have helped to
bolster recreational programs
and to assist the township with
beautification and maintenance
in our local parks and facilities.
Just as spring was beginning to
poke its head through the wintery
haze, more than a dozen Indian
Princesses and their fathers decided to help it along by preparing one of Moorestown Townships favorite park sites for the
season. On Saturday, March 26
this committed group of young
ladies helped to clean-up and
beautify the Strawbridge Lake
playground area as part of their
community service requirements.
Armed with rakes, shovels and
wheelbarrows, the group set up
shop early in the morning at
Strawbridge Lake. The girls and
their fathers proceeded to weed
the park, trim bushes and trees,
plant flowers and pick up debris.
Following the clean-up, this motley crew of princesses proved
that princesses work hard. The
girls and their supportive dads
not only cleaned up, but spruced
up by moving load after load of
mulch.

experienced a similar loss.
To date, nearly 500 local children have benefited from attending the camp.
The children come from a variety of backgrounds and interests,
and they range in age from 7 to 14.
We think weve done a pretty
good job of finding something fun
for everyone, Moorestown VNA
Bereavement Coordinator Andra
Vasko said.
All kids will be given the opportunity to swim, canoe, take part
in a giant scavenger hunt, Zumba
dancing, basketball, t-shirt decorating, smores around the campfire and a puppet show.
These activities are interspersed with grief support sessions, a memorial boat launch
and arts-and-crafts projects that
help the children to visually express their feelings of loss,
Vasko said.
They are always busy and engaged while at camp.

Ray of Hope Contest

Project Graduation
By DANA YOUNG
They are graduating high school, moving
on to who knows what new adventures, and
Project Graduation wants to give them one
last hoorah! They walk off the high school
stadium field and quickly change and get
shuttled onto buses that will parade down
Main Street as they leave town, to destinations unknown to spend the rest of the
night into the wee hours of the morning
celebrating together as a class.
Here is where the need comes in. It is all
funded by donations to make this an unforgettable night for these kids. A group of
parent volunteers has designed a night
full of activities to keep them safe from
drinking and maybe making some unwise
choices that night. There have been
arcades, aquariums, dancing, just to name
a few things done in years past.
Then there are the giveaways, a whole
different set of donated items to offer as
winning tickets are drawn throughout the

night. It is sponsored by local businesses

and families.
So here are the parents running this program, out there asking, if not begging, for
the community to support these kids and
give them an unforgettable evening.
It is estimated that it costs $150 per student to run the event. Parents of the students and every other parent in town
receive a letter requesting a small donation. There is nothing wrong with that, but I
will say, as a parent of a senior, this is an
expensive year. There are senior portraits,
cap and gown, yearbooks, senior trip, college applications and the list goes on.
So as we celebrate their accomplishments, we keep on doing what it takes to
get them where they are going. But maybe
organizations such as the Ray of Hope can
ease some of the expense.
There is no better way to congratulate
the class of 2016 than by voting for it to win
this $500 opportunity!

The Ray of Hope will award one of these four organizations a $500 donation! Read
the essays below about each organization, and decide which you think is the most
deserving of the $500 donation. Reader voting will decide the winner. To vote, send
an e-mail to rayofhope@moorestownsun.com. Voting will end on Friday, May 6.

Percheron Park
By MARGO M. FOSTER
In 1839, Moorestown native Edward Harris II (1799-1863) introduced Percheron
horses to America from France to improve
the work horses here. His foresighted
action had a nationwide impact on farming
and transport in the 19th and early 20th
centuries.
Percherons, referred to as diligence
(stagecoach) horses, were developed in the
ancient region of le Perche and possessed
the strength, stamina, speed and calm temperament suited for farm and road work.
Harris showcased their superb qualities
with Diligence, his dapple-gray stallion.
Soon, other men followed his lead and
imported and bred more. By 1930,
Percheron horses outnumbered the other
draft breeds in the USA by three-to-one,
before the combustion engine outplaced
live horsepower.
Farmers and teamsters across America
held their Percherons in high regard. In
1892, the publisher of a midwestern farm
journal shared the suggestion that Harris
should have an equestrian monument as

the first man to introduce the [Percheron]

Draft Horse to America.
Percheron Park will feature that iconic
monument.
In 2006, a Moorestown citizens committee sought ideas for creating interest in the
town center. A proposal to install a life-sized,
bronze statue of Diligence found a place
when the township purchased the property
at Main and High streets to create a pocket
park. Soon dubbed Percheron Park, it was
ready to provide its impact on Moorestown.
The Friends of Percheron Park was
formed in 2011 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation to raise funds to build the park.
Although the community has donated generously, more funding is needed. Soil remediation on this site of a former gas station
is taking longer than predicted, causing a
delay in construction and donations. Support from the Ray of Hope award will provide financial impact and a morale boost
that will spur enthusiastic commitment
from the town.
Further information is available at
www.percheronpark.org.

Girl Scout Troop 22169

By KARLA PETERSON
In the first grade, I joined Moorestown
Girl Scout Troop 22169, a local Brownie
troop based out of Roberts Elementary.
Now, nearly a decade later, Im still a member of this same troop, which has since
risen through the ranks of Girl Scouting.
From Brownies to Juniors, Juniors to
Cadets, Cadets to Seniors (with some
ambassadors thrown in, too), our members
have changed. We are older now. Our members are not only from just Moorestown
High School, but also Moorestown Friends
School.
As we have aged and matured, we have
done countless projects for the environment from no-idling campaigns, to plastic
water bottle awareness, learning about
invasive and native species, and learning
about remediation and contaminated soil
in our own town. We have worked with
younger generations of Girl Scouts, educating them about Girl Scout traditions and
cookie sale techniques. On the subject of
cookie selling; selling is not just about
fundraising, but also about business skills.
Selling cookies has taught us money management, and financial skills, marketing
and business experience that we would
never have experienced otherwise.

Through community service, environmental work and cookie sales, Troop 22169
has constantly provided girls with new
experiences and challenges, filled with
learning and discovery about ourselves
and others. Instilled with confidence, I firmly believe that we can do anything.
This summer, were putting together a
trip to a Girl Scout Camp in Iceland. The trip
will take place at the end of August. There,
well learn about the environment and
geothermal concepts, well ride the native
ponies, hike glaciers and volcanoes. It will
be a trip of a lifetime for us who seem to
have spent a lifetime together.
Weve grown up together; weve seen
each other build strength and skills. Hopefully now well get to see Rejkuik. Our fearless leaders, Denise Mahoney and Sara Lilja,
have inspired us to reach our fullest potential. Theyve demanded much of us over the
years, constantly challenging us to always
to our best and accepting nothing less.
Pushing us to reach ambitious goals has
been fruitful; adventure and opportunity
have been accomplished by hard work.
Countless cookie sales and fundraisers
have made other trips possible and will
make Iceland possible, too, though $500
wouldnt hurt!

4th of July Parade

By ESTHER CLARK
The Moorestown 4th of July Parade is
more than just a parade. It is a group of
local residents who volunteer their time
and talents to fund and orchestrate the
parade on July 4. Its main focus is to celebrate our countrys birthday.
However, there is much more.
1.) This organization sponsors a Freedom
Lecture Series. This series is developed by
the Constitution Center, but funded by the
committee.
2.) The American Legion William Snyder
Post 42 is an active participant. It invites
veterans who have served and are currently serving to ride in the parade.
3.) Volunteers also create a float for
entry in the Christmas Parade.
4.) Finally, the educational component
chairs a Freedom Poster Contest for children.
A young boy, riding his bike after the
first parade, was heard asking his companion this question: Do you know why were
having a parade today?
This sparked the annual Poster Contest.

Each year, a theme is assigned to the

parade. This years theme is: Stars &
Stripes. Its purpose is to engage elementary students to create a poster that
reflects an aspect of this topic. The top
three winners earn a special place of honor
riding in the parade.
What is best about this parade?
First, Moorestown residents are the participants. Non-profits, local businesses,
families and neighbors march together
dressed in their red, white and blue. The
festive atmosphere is accelerated by viewing pets wearing Uncle Sam colors, too.
Secondly, our community is what it is
because of the sacrifices made by our citizens. The parade celebrates the freedoms
we hold dear and unites us on this one day.
Lastly, the committee sponsors
fundraisers, but they are not enough to
cover the $10,000 cost for the parade. A
web site, www.moorestownjuly4thparade.
com, shares event pictures and accepts
donations as a 501(c3). The prize offered
by this contest would greatly help this
organization.

often overlooked because they

hide their feelings or are unable
to express their feelings appropriately, Plasket said.
Camp Firefly provides a
unique opportunity for the children to open up to peers who have
experienced a similar loss, to
bond with counselors who understand what they are going
through and to learn positive
strategies for coping with loss in
their lives.
Vasko said some of these children arrive the first day expressing ambivalence and worry about
what the weekend will comprise.
Firefly gives them the opportu-

nity to honor and remember their

loved ones in a meaningful way
while also having some fun.
Its knowing weve had a real
and positive impact on our
campers, Vasko said. At the conclusion of Camp Firefly, the
campers express satisfaction with
having met other children with
similar losses. The common
ground of loss is significant to the
children. Before camp, they may
not have known of another child
at their school or in their community who suffered the loss of someone close to them who died.
The group alternates traditional camp activities with loss-related activities that help the children cope with the nature of
early grief, an emotion that has a
tendency to hit at inopportune
and unexpected times.
The volunteers and counselors

pay close attention to the children

and are supportive of their grief
process throughout the weekend
and in all of the activities.
We learn to navigate grief by
allowing the tears, anger, happy
memories and the whole range of
emotions to come, but to let them
go as well, and focus to the best of
our ability on the task or activity
at hand, Vasko said.

My coach helped me along the

way to get there, Will said.
Will owes his thanks and appreciation to his coach Vassili
Iakimenko, his teammates, his
sister Anabelle and Champions
United Gymnastics Academy,
his mother Julie said.
Will started gymnastics by
chance. His sister Anabelle liked
gymnastics, so his parents had
him take a class at the same time.
He has liked it ever since and continued to do gymnastics for the
past three years.
The things Will really likes
about the sport are working with
his teammates and becoming
strong and focused from his time
in gymnastics. His favorite thing
to do is the pommel horse.
Will trains on the rings, mush-

room, pommel horse/vault, floor

and parallel bars. According to
LaVan, Will is naturally athletic,
but he still needed to work hard to
improve. Trying to get better, he
practices 12 to 15 hours per week.
The 2016 New Jersey Mens
State Championship was Wills
first time going to states. He entered the Level 5 age 7 group,
which is the youngest group you
can enter at Level 5 with the oldest being 11 and older.
Will said he was happy and excited to enter his first competition, but also a little scared. However, he was able to push through
his fear.
As this was the first time, his
parents just hoped he tried his
best and benefited from his experience to he could be more prepared for his next experience at
the state championships.
Our hope for Will at states was
that he would learn and gain
more knowledge for the next
time, LaVan said.

In a happy and successful turn

of events, Will placed first overall
in his group. In the Level 5 age 7
group, there were approximately
40 kids, according to LaVan, and
Will came out on top. Will received an overall score of 62.2; the
runner-up received a 61.8.
I was very excited and proud
of myself, Will said.
We were shocked and thrilled
and he was on cloud nine, LaVan
said.
For his great performance at
states, Will was able to attend regionals. The regionals were held
recently and Will placed 10th
overall, again competing against
about 40 others. He received a 59.9
at regionals.
I was kind of happy (to receive 10th place) because the
judges were harder on us, Will
said.
Will plans to continue with the
sport. His parents hope he continues to enjoy it and work hard to
achieve his goals.

sixth to eighth graders. From her

win, she was nominated to got to
the Broadcom MASTERS, the
premier science and engineering
competition for middle school
students.
I like that math and science
are so connected to the real world
and used every day. Science is
everywhere, and once you learn
one thing, you find there is so
much more to learn about, Maya
said.
At the UES, as well as the middle school and high school, students were invited to participate
in the Coriell Institute Science
Fair at the Camden County College. Maya, a lover of science and
math, was interested in participating.
Inspired by her time on the robotics team, the JaberBlockies,
Maya wanted to do something to

help the environment. She started to search the Internet for ideas,
when on the side of her screen,
she saw something about creating
plastics from food we eat every
day as a more eco-friendly plastic
over other items such as crude oil
and petroleum by-products.
She got to work, doing research
to see if it were possible to create
plastic from three types of food
canned beans, potatoes and plantains. Her hypothesis was the potatoes and plantains would work,
but not the canned beans. She felt
the canned beans, with starch
that was already processed,
would not be able to gelatinize.
Maya tested her theory by combining the blended foods with
acetic acid, water and food dye
and heating the mixture. She let
each cool for a few days and found
all of them were made into plastic.
Maya worked all by herself on
the project, coming up with it, implementing it and even teaching
her parents a thing or two.
It was 100 percent her project.
We didnt help her at all. We were
extremely proud of her. She
taught myself and my husband
about plastics and the energy
needed to make them, as well as
recycling, her mother Savita
said.
Maya said she was a bit nervous going into the Coriell Institute Science Fair on March 19,
but mostly excited as she really
enjoyed what she worked on and
talking about it. Maya had a
poster board, her plastics and molecular models for her presentation. Throughout the day, she
spoke to multiple judges on her
project. All of her hard work paid
off as she received first place in
the chemistry category as well as
the American Chemical Society

award from sixth to eighth grade,

which allows her to move on to
the regional science fair.
I was really happy because I
didnt know I would get to move
on, Maya said.
Before the Delaware Valley Science Fair, Maya improved her
poster board and added new information to her presentation,
hoping to do just as well as last
time. Again, Maya was nervous
and a little more intimidated this
time due to the higher level of
projects, but was still excited to
present her project.
There were a lot more judges
(at the Delaware Valley Science
Fair) I was a little intimidated,
but I told myself, I made it this far
and if I keep doing what I was
doing before Ill be fine, Maya
said.
After the fair, Maya found she
was the first-place winner for
chemistry again. She also received special awards, which
were the Jack Mixit Award of
$100 for ability and creativity in
STEM research, the Future Scientist Award from the Eastern Regional Research Center for the
USDA, the Quaker Chemical
Company Special Award for $300,
and she was nominated to the
Broadcom MASTERS national
middle school competition.
I was again really overjoyed
and excited I am going to keep
going, Maya said.
We are really so proud of her.
It is just amazing getting first
over all of the sixth to eighth
graders in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, Savita said.
The Broadcom MASTERS competition deadline is June 15, so
Maya plans to improve her project until then by trying to make a
plastic bag, and will find out if
she is a finalist in September.
