DEVELOPING THE GLOBAL

BUSINESS LEADERS OF
THE FUTURE

What does it take to be a great business leader? What skills and

qualities do you need to become part of the global elite? These
are the questions that many MBA candidates will be asking.
One thing is for sure its not just about management theory,
although a knowledge of subjects like finance and strategy is
essential for those wishing to reach the highest levels.
The best business leaders also know how to apply their
knowledge even in challenging circumstances, solve problems,
inspire and motivate others, and develop networks. They can
operate in dynamic, culturally diverse and complex global markets
and are compassionate, socially aware leaders.
As the number one program in Australia and Asia Pacific, the
UQ Business School MBA aims to create the global business
leaders of the future. We strike a balance between academic
rigour and practical application, providing an environment where
our students can develop all the right skills and qualities as they
continue on their career path.
Here are some of the things that set us apart:

Putting knowledge into practice

Gaining global perspective

The UQ Business School MBA offers students a range of

opportunities to apply their knowledge and develop their
problem solving skills in real-life business scenarios.

Our international programs offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to

work with globally renowned business schools to penetrate two
of the worlds biggest markets China and the US while our
immersion tours provide an insight into emerging economies.

Building leadership skills

Leadership is a key focus in the UQ Business School MBA.
The Leadership Capability Framework, developed specifically for
the MBA program, assesses your level of leadership skills and
provides evidence of your progress.

Supporting your career

As you embark on your MBA, our Career Resource Centre will
provide networking opportunities and extensive careers support to
help you on the way.
I look forward to working with you.

Giving back to society

With social justice rising up the business agenda, the Social
Economic Engagement Program (SEEP) gives MBA students an
opportunity to work within the community and use their skills to
solve social problems.

OVERCOMING REAL
BUSINESS CHALLENGES

CAPSTONE
Problem solving is central to a leaders role, so one of
the most important outcomes from the MBA is the ability
to apply your knowledge and skills to resolve real-life
business issues.
The Integrated Strategic Analysis Capstone course is the culmination of
the MBA. It provides the opportunity to integrate the key concepts you
have learned in previous courses in a consultancy project for one of
UQ Business Schools partner companies.
Working as part of a team, you will be operating at the highest strategic
level of business and collaborating directly with the CEO. The Capstone
project will challenge your capabilities, requiring you to apply your
skills in unfamiliar contexts and address complex problems. However
the experience is also highly rewarding, and will help to build your
confidence in your own capabilities and provide an experience of
lasting impact.
The MBA Capstone experience concludes with a signature event away
from the UQ St Lucia campus, where graduating MBA students present
their conclusions and recommendations.

The MBA Capstone course was an exciting opportunity to

work with an amazingly talented team of fellow students and
apply the skills we learned throughout the MBA program to
solve a challenging real-life business problem.

develop their leadership skills in the community and to achieve the
sense of fulfilment that comes from giving back to society.
Outputs from previous projects have included:

BUILDING EXPERIENCE IN
INTERNATIONAL MARKETS
In todays international marketplace, employers
value graduates with a global business perspective.
UQ Business Schools international programs
allow students to broaden their horizons by gaining
exposure to new markets.

You will learn how to operate in different business

environments with differing cultures and regulations,

THE WHARTON GLOBAL

CONSULTING PRACTICUM

The UQ Wharton GCP was the icing on the cake in finishing

my MBA. Being able to put some of the theory I have learnt
into practice was a great experience. The client, being a
new industry for me, forced us to apply critical thinking to a
completely different commercial scenario.

The Wharton Global Consulting Practicum (GCP) is one of the

best experiential learning opportunities for MBA students that a
business school can offer.
As the only business school in Australasia to be selected as a
partner for the GCP, it gives UQ Business School MBA students
the chance to collaborate with the top-ranking Wharton School
of the University of Pennsylvania to develop a US market-entry or
expansion strategy for a paying Australasian company.
The program brings together selected MBA students from both
Wharton and UQ Business School, and culminates in a week-long
practicum hosted by the Wharton School in Philadelphia.

STEFFI ANDRUCHIW
Chief Financial Officer, Harcourts International

The GCP program provides UQ Business School students

with an unmatched opportunity for both professional and
personal development. Bringing MBA theory to life while
you work with a global team and produce deliverables for a
paying client is incredibly rewarding. The GCP experience
pushes students to grow as collaborative team members
and as leaders. For me, participating in the GCP was the
ultimate MBA experience.

The program culminates in two days of

DEVELOPING INSIGHT
INTO EMERGING ECONOMIES
The rise of emerging markets has been one of the
biggest forces shaping the global economy this
century. As the world order changes, emerging
economies are becoming increasingly important
as a source of both new business opportunities and
of competition.

The MBA International Immersion Tours cover a

variety of destinations each year, offering students a
unique business and cultural experience and
a depth of insight that cannot be matched in
the classroom.

You will have the opportunity to:

MEETING INDUSTRIALISTS IN INDIA

Learn about the countrys economy and what is driving growth

Understand the political system and its impact on business

Appreciate the culture, attitudes and social trends

Meet local representatives from industry, government and the

not-for-profit sector

Develop your own networks within the country and identify

study and career opportunities

The Immersion Tours are designed to broaden students global

business experience and translate classroom learning into
practice. The Immersion program is an extra-curricular offering
and students pay an additional fee for participation.

SECRETS OF CHINAS SUCCESS

MBA students on the 2014 trip to China learned first-hand how
a country relatively new to global business could so quickly be
leading the way in many new and established industries, from
digital innovation to specialised manufacturing.

Delegates on the 2013 and 2014 Immersion Tours to India took

part in an industry panel at the High Commission in Delhi, met
businesses from a wide range of sectors, attended lectures at the
Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad, and worked with a
microfinance charity in the slums of Delhi.
They rated the tour 7 out of 7 in terms of the overall experience
and said that their perspectives on India and emerging economies
had been transformed as a result.

The India Immersion Tour provided us with an insightful

and unique overview to the business environment and
culture in India. We were fortunate to be exposed to a
very thoughtful and diverse set of experiences with ISB
lectures, company tours and industry panel discussions.
It was a truly exhilarating and energising experience.

Destinations for the 2015 Immersion Tours include India, China and Argentina.

network of over 40,000 alumni. They include over 3,500 MBA
alumni from a broad range of industries as well as graduates in
management, commerce and business from undergraduate,
postgraduate and research programs.

You will work under the supervision of lecturers who are highly
regarded, widely published in their fields of expertise, and
sought after as consultants to industry. The opportunity to
interact with guest speakers, including business leaders and our
own Industry Fellows and Adjunct Professors, will be provided
to you throughout your time at UQ Business School.
With students drawn from a wide range of industries, you
can be sure of interesting, informative and diverse classroom
discussions. The UQ Business School MBA is only open to
students with meaningful work experience, and overseas

career enhancement. It also organises seminars and networking
events, providing an environment in which
like-minded alumni can gather.
Alumni can stay connected to UQ Business School and their
peers through online communities on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter
and Instagram, and keep up-to-date with news and activities
via the alumni e-newsletter. We are always interested in hearing
about the careers and life experiences of our alumni, and working
together to organise reunions and events.
A special Alumni Advisory Board was formed in 2013 to meet
the needs of MBA students. The Alumni Ambassador Award
was also established to recognise the MBA alumnus who has

STREAMLINED & FLEXIBLE

The Streamlined 24 month and Flexible part-time options include
evening classes, some weekend intensive classes and one-week
intensive mode offerings. Program structures vary depending on
semester of commencement.
If you have chosen the Streamlined program, you will need
to study an average of three courses each semester over the
24 months (excluding the winter and summer semesters). We
recommend that you choose a combination of weeknight and
weekend courses each semester, and if you wish to spread out
your workload, you may include one or two winter and summer
courses along the way.
The Flexible program will enable you to study as few as
one course per semester. You will have up to seven years
to complete your MBA program from your semester
of commencement.
You are able to take any course offering to suit your schedule,
e.g. intensive, weeknights, or weekend. All we ask is that you take
careful note of the key dates attached to the different offerings

following guidelines and enrol in:

a. MGTS7801 Management Frameworks in your first year of
study; and
b. ACCT7804 Accounting & Business Analysis and ECON7012
Business Economics BEFORE attempting FINM7805 Financial
Management; and
c. MGTS7803 Integrated Strategic Analysis in your final year
of study.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
ACCT7804 Accounting & Business Analysis
Accounting involves compiling and interpreting financial information about an enterprise and its activities as a basis for making and evaluating
economic decisions about the deployment of resources. A basic knowledge of accounting is important for anyone involved in modern
enterprises, whether they are profit-oriented, government, or non-profit entities. The aim of the course is to provide a broad understanding of
the accounting discipline to enable students to comprehend, evaluate, interpret, question, and intelligently discuss accounting information;
and understand the uses, limitations, complexities and evolving nature of accounting.
ECON7012 Business Economics
This course focuses on how consumption, investment, production and supply chain choices are made in the face of problems of information and
knowledge. These choices need to be coordinated to avoid wasted opportunities, even more so when individuals, firms, or entire economies
choose to specialise. Adjustments in relative prices and the incentives provided by profits and losses play major coordinating roles. Coordination
is also assisted by planning and social institutions. Even so, coordination failures can still occur, leading to major slumps in employment and
international trade. Economics can help to assess when these problems are likely and how they may be dealt with.
FINM7805 Financial Management
This course provides students with a range of tools required for corporate financial decision-making and personal investing. The course also
develops a framework for corporate decision-making centred on the concept of shareholder value. Topics include: financial mathematics;
short-term financial management; the use and valuation of debt and equity securities; project evaluation with an emphasis on the discounted
cash flow techniques of net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR); individual investing; portfolio theory and diversification; the
weighted-average cost of capital (WACC); risk; and the capital asset pricing model (CAPM).
MGTS7801 Management Frameworks
This foundation course introduces students to the MBA and provides specific areas of foundational knowledge and skills to build on throughout
the program. These areas include frameworks for understanding organisations and leadership, as well as individual management and leadership
abilities. Building capability begins with a thorough self-assessment, gap analysis, and subsequent identification of professional goals that can be
achieved throughout, and beyond completion of the program.
MGTS7802 International Management
International Management provides an understanding of how the economic, geopolitical and cultural dimensions of the international business
environment shape international business investment trade and transacting, and how international firms are managed in this environment.
Strategies for market positioning of very large firms, small and medium firms in these complex environments, and the firm structures that emerge
to support these strategies, are investigated alongside new and innovative forms of enterprise to capture international advantage.
MGTS7803 Integrated Strategic Analysis
The final and capstone course, Integrated Strategic Analysis, is delivered as a one week residential that integrates and extends the key concepts
from the core courses of the MBA program. This course allows students to analyse, synthesise and present conclusions and recommendations
on a current business case.
MGTS7807 Operations Design
The objective of this course is to develop students understanding of business systems and process design within diverse organisations and
to evaluate how they relate to the organisations corporate objectives, market development, and long-term sustainability. Students will gain
an understanding of the important theoretical issues and concepts relating to the design of core business processes, performance reporting
mechanisms and accountability.
MGTS7808 Information Technology for Business Value
How do senior managers use information and communication technology (ICT) systems and services to enable strategy and get more business
value out of IT? In this course we take the strategic perspective of the general manager to study how leading firms leverage their IT investments.
Our focus centres on IT leadership and IT governance rather than the more technical aspects of IT. Therefore an IT background is not required.
MGTS7809 Strategic Human Resources Management
This course examines the systems and processes involved in human resource management with the aim of improving organisational
performance. Building on an appreciation of the environment in which business operates, the course aims to develop a deep understanding of
HR practices such as recruitment, selection and retention of staff as value adding activities. Strategies aimed at managing staff performance and
developing staff competence and the professional and ethical application of HR practice are explored at the individual and organisational level.
MGTS7810 Leading People & Teams
This course develops the skills and knowledge required to lead people and teams effectively in modern organisations. The course specifically
focuses on current theory and applied knowledge in this area, starting from an initial focus on the role of individual variables (personality,
motivations, perceptions, communication skills, emotional intelligence) and then moving to the nature of teams (team roles, cohesion, norms,
formation, identity issues) and the interplay between individual and team factors within organisations. The approach taken also provides
opportunities for students to reflect on their own work experiences and to improve their current practice.
MKTG7806 Marketing Management
This course synthesises current perspectives of marketing and communication theory. Students will be expected to critique traditional marketing
management and communication thinking within organisations. This contemporary approach aims to inform management practice better through
a synthesis of the interplay between the disciplines of communication and marketing. It will prepare students to think ethically and critically about
the communication and relationship processes that occur in organisations between their internal and external stakeholders.
TIMS7811 Innovation Leadership
Innovation has been described as the fundamental source of competitive advantage. The purpose of this course is to analyse the importance
and nature of innovation and how managers can lead innovation for sustainable competitive advantage. The course is based on robust analytical
frameworks and contemporary empirical evidence on international best practice in innovation leadership.
