Syllabus

Workshop Title:
Digital Communication for the Classroom
Workshop Description (purpose):
The purpose of this workshop is to explore quick and simple ways to integrate digital
technology into classroom communication processes. This workshop will identify what
elements should be included in digital communication to parents and students. This
workshop will allow learners to practice the creation of a blog or wiki site. This workshop is
aimed at teachers within the k-12 learning setting. This workshop can be held in an online
or face to face format.
Workshop Objectives:
To instruct teachers on how to choose, create and implement digital communication with
parents.
To determine what to include in the blog or wiki space.
To determine what interaction will be allowed within the site.
NETS-T standards for Teachers:
5. PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE: Teachers use technology to enhance their
productivity and professional practice.
5C. Apply technology to increase productivity.
5D. Use Technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger
community in order to nurture student learning.
Workshop Activities:
Prior to the workshop, learners will complete a digital survey with questions to

determine the level of the learners in the class as well as initial thoughts on how the
learner will use the wiki or blog site.
Introduction: 3 minutes- Analyze examples of good and poor blogs and wiki pages.

Introduction: 3 minutes- Identify elements of good/ poor wikis and blogs in small

group discussion (elbow partner if the workshop is delivered face to face, break out
room if delivered online)
Engage: 5 minutes- Active reading and discussion of an article - How to Create a

digitally via file share if workshop is via Blackboard Collaborate or Adobe Connect
(online) or handed out hard copy if the workshop is delivered face to face. View a

Discuss: 2 minutes- Discussion in small groups on how classroom blogs/ wikis are
helpful in communication practices.

Discuss: 2 minutes- Brainstorm ideas of what could/ should be included in a blog/ wiki
and whether public forum comments should be allowed on the site. Discuss ways to
avoid confusion on posted materials

Workshop Assignments
Prior to the workshop create a basic wiki page using PB Works, Glogster or

Wikispaces. Others sites are entertained after discussion with the instructor. The
instructor will send directions electronically.
Prior to the workshop create a blog site using wix.com, glogster, weebly, edublog, or

other site that is discussed with the instructor. The instructor will send directions
electronically.
Evaluate 10 minutes- Choose one online learning activity to add to a wiki page for

students to complete at home- provided by the instructor to reduce time and allow
participants to engage with the platform tools (as an extension, students can add
their own activity) or Choose one announcement, article or instruction to be delivered
via the blog site- provided by the instructor to reduce time and allow participants to
engage with the platform tools (as an extension, students can add their own
announcement, reading or instruction)
Discuss and Evaluate 5 minutes- Share the blog or wiki created with the group
members.

Workshop Evaluation (Grading components and assessment methods)


Evaluate: Learners will be evaluated during interactive discussion time for proper

participation.
Evaluate: Student wiki sites and blog sites will be reviewed to make sure

the instructor provided resources were properly added.


Evaluate: Learners will submit to the instructor a wiki/ blog created for their

classroom (due 2 weeks after workshop)


Evaluate: A discussion topic board will ask learners to add their wiki/ blog for peer

review.
Conclusion and feedback: A ticket out the door survey will be delivered at the
conclusion of the workshop via email for students to provide feedback on the
workshop.

Instructor and Learner interaction expectations


Instructor will provide pre-conference resources via email no later than one week

prior to the scheduled date.


Learners will create one blog and one wiki account according to the instructor's

directions prior to workshop attendance.


Learners will participate in all discussions.
Learners will complete all activities as detailed in the workshop as well as after the

workshop.
Learners will provide feedback via survey within 2 weeks of the final submission to
the instructor.

Instructor will answer all questions within 24 hours on business days; Monday for
weekend inquiries.

Policies concerning academic honesty


Workshop learners are expected to complete all activities independently where requested.
Learners should submit original work and when using sources that belong to others, proper
credit will be given with proper citing of the resource (see the Purdue Owls site if needed for
citing source help).
