EHD Profile

EHD FOUNDATION
Education and Health are key areas of basic human needs. Unfortunately, current Health and Education
situation presents a dismal picture.

Country wide statistics indicate that there is one doctor for every 1,500 people whereas the slum
areas are not even considered for such facilities.
Student to teacher ratio in the country is as poor as 1:102.
The situation is further aggravated in the slums (Kachi Abadis), where people have no access to
even basic education and civic amenities.
Unhygienic living conditions are hallmark of such areas

In order to address the aforementioned issues, Education, Health and Development Foundation was
established on September 6, 2002, with a view to provide the basic amenities of life to the residents of
these Kachi Abadis. The Foundation had initially launched its program from Islamabad with the
objective of its subsequent expansion through out the Country, but now its working in Gilgit, Kashmir
and NWFP also. As many as 95,000 people live in the slums comprising 41 units scattered within the
jurisdiction of the Capital Territory.

Our Vision:
Countrywide statistics present a dismal picture. They indicate that there is one doctor for every 1,500
people. The student to teacher ratio in the country is as poor as 1:102 while 37 million children are
deprived of education. In the slums people have no access to even basic civic amenities and unhygienic
living conditions are a hallmark of such areas. Sewerage facilities, water, gas and electricity are facilities
we take for granted in large cities, yet these are absent in those areas of the city the poor can afford to
live in (katchi abadis).
Service to humanity is akin to divine worship. The Almighty Allah cherishes those who strive to
alleviate others problems. This is the reason why Islam greatly stresses on the rights of people (Hoqooqul-Ebad).
The Holy Prophets (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Be kind to the dwellers of the Earth so that the
Lord of the Heavens may be kind to you. On another occasion the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)
noted:
In comparison with retiring for prayers, I prefer visiting a faithful, and attending to him and extending
help.
Such Islamic teachings invite us to step forward and constitute an ideal Islamic altruistic society through
service to humanity. Keeping this in mind when we consider the existing conditions in Pakistan, we
come across some very startling facts regarding unemployment, accessibility to healthcare, accessibility
to education, nutrition, availability of drinkable water or sewerage facilities.
The existing conditions in Pakistan demand us to be selfless and to work for the amelioration of the
condition of the masses. EHD Foundation was conceived as a result of this pressing need to serve the
underprivileged. EHD Foundation is an independent, non-profit, non-political and non-government
6

welfare organization. It is an NGO (Non-Government Organization) committed to improving the quality

of life of the underprivileged. The Foundation is a Trust registered under the Trust Acts 1882 by the Joint
Sub-Registrar, Islamabad, Pakistan since September 2002.

Our Mission:
Our mission is to establish an exemplary society through service to humanity. The specific objective of
EHD Foundation is to provide basic facilities such as Education, Health and Development projects to the
poor and deserving so that they may be able to make a positive contribution to society.

Our Objectives:
EHD Foundation aims to achieve the following objectives:

To provide free education to the poor and underprivileged.

To establish model educational institutions, which can impart quality education.

To provide financial support to poor and needy students for primary, secondary and
higher education.

To promote Science and Technology Education through establishing institutions and

collaborating with governmental and non-governmental organizations.

To prepare skilled hands through establishing vocational and technical training centers.

To set up Special Education Institutes for mentally and physically impaired children.

To provide equal opportunities for women in the field of formal and informal education.
To generate a marriage fund for poor and needy families.

To establish mobile dispensaries and free medical camps specific to deserving patients.
To initiate water supply projects in remote areas for providing drinking water.

To enhance our agricultural output by providing technical assistance and training to

farmers.

To increase awareness among the people about the environment and measures to reduce
environmental pollution.

To plan and assist in implementing low cost profit oriented projects for unemployed
people.

Our Trustees:
EHD Foundation was started by a group of seven dedicated persons in 2002. Its board now comprises of
14 individuals, seven male and seven female. As the work of EHD expanded, its board of trustees grew
to include more individuals who share the vision and mission of EHD.

Our Projects

Education:
We are able to establish 17 schools in the katchi abadis and villages in and around
Rawalpindi/Islamabad. Our first school was inaugurated in the year 2002. Over 3,000 children are
benefiting from these schools. Books, uniforms and shoes are provided by EHD.

Teacher Training:
To sharpen teaching skills, monthly meetings and quarterly training workshops are arranged under the
auspices of the foundation for principals and teachers.

Supply of Clean Drinking Water:

303 hand pumps installed in katchi abadis over the past five years provide clean drinking water to more
than lac of needy people in and around Rawalpindi/Islamabad.

Health:
About 80 medical camps are arranged by EHD in different katchi abadis annually. The EHD Health
Centre at Shakrial and Physiotherapy Centre at Gilgit are operational year round.

Animal Gift -- Sustainable Livelihood Project:

As a result of the earthquake in 2005 some families lost all their earning members leaving behind
widows, young children and senior family members. EHD Foundation is trying to help re-establish a
means of livelihood for these people. In this regard a survey was conducted. In the first phase, 300
widows have been provided with goats and chicken so that they can support themselves, consuming the
milk and selling the eggs and baby goats to earn their living. For many families the milk from these
goats and roti is often times the only food in winter. The families also agree to pass on one or more of
their animals offspring, passing on the gift of self-reliance to others.

Ramadhan and Eid Packages:

Every year, as a part of Ramadhan relief, about 7500 people are provided with food items in katchi
abadis. Iftar dinners were also arranged at certain places.
Cooking oil, meat and milk was provided amongst poor people in the shape of Eid packages so they
could share in this festive occasion.

Winter Relief:
Orphans and the needy look towards your cooperation to provide them with the basic necessities of life.
EHD provides warm clothes and shoes during the winter season to more than 12000 deserving people.

Earthquake 2005 Relief Activities:

On 8th October, 2005, when the earthquake destroyed almost everything in Kashmir, and many of the
Northern Areas, EHD conducted a survey and identified 105 remote villages where immediate relief was
needed.
Details of Relief Activities are as follows:

Distribution: 105 trucks were sent carrying necessities of life.

affected areas

Best Performance Award:

The Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Shaukat Aziz presented EHD Foundation with a shield for Best
Performance on the 9th of October 2005. EHD was one of sixty NGOs to have their work recognized.
Our achievements would not have been possible without your generous donations and prayers.

Flood created a largest humanitarian crisis of the history. Infrastructure of flood affected areas is badly
affected and the locals are living in the open places. It is extremely difficult moment for them. Their
condition is entirely busted. Their houses are broken, house holds ruined, livestock vanished and they
are suffering from food crisis. In several areas, water is still all around on the ground. The water is
beginning to recede, revealing a disaster that will take years to resolve. People made homeless by the
devastating floodwaters and they are not able to live on the debris of their houses. Many people are
living with their children under the shade of a tree, as their houses become inadequate with deadly flood
and washed away all belongings.
Our representatives are working in the fields to assess and distribute the required basic necessities
among the most affected areas, we examine that the area of Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Kakhtunkhwa
and Sindh are badly affected. There are still people trapped in water.
A part of this affected population is whose, who never have Qurbanis meat. These reuined peple are the
best distributees of qurbani meat.
According to our inspection there are more then 8,000 families residing in the areas of Khyber
PakhtunKhwa, Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan. Detail of these families is as follows:
