Log Sheet for Recording

You will be assessed and moderated using the following document - make sure it is thoroughly filled in!
Your recording sessions must have photographic evidence - make sure you have a partner to help you by taking
photos of your work on your phone or on an iPad (make sure you collect these photos afterwards - this is your
responsibility!)

Session One

Date: 4/11/15

Learning Outcome

Specific Detail

What microphone type have

you chosen and why.

What are you recording e.g. guitar, vocals, etc.

Piano
Dynamic or condenser microphone?
Dynamic
Why have you chosen this microphone?
I have chosen this microphone because a condenser microphone is much more sensitive to the frequency of the
piano whereas a dynamic microphone has a wider frequency range.
Due to this if you were to use a condenser microphone it could distort the sound.

What placement have you

used and why?

How many microphones are you using?

1
Where are your microphones placed, and how far away?
About 6-10 inches away
Why have you chosen this placement?
Because it is an electric piano, the distance the microphone is away from the piano is different.

What other equipment have

you used?

What cables have you used to connect the microphone to the audio interface?
XLR
What channel is it on the audio interface? 2
What track is it on the Cubase mixer? 1
List all of your other equipment.
Piano
Microphone
Microphone lead
Microphone stand
Headphones
Amplifier

Evaluation of sound and any

changes you have made.

Were you happy with your initial placement and sound of the instrument?
NO
If you changed it, what did you change to, and why?
The recording at the start was too quiet so I moved the microphone closer to the speaker

Input level set

Take a photo of your input levels on your Cubase mix and your audio interface dial.

Recording evaluation

Was the first recording successful?

NO
If you recorded again, what did you re-record and why? Did you re-record the whole track or just parts of it? What
went wrong? How many times did you re-record until you were happy?
I decided to re-record once as the vocals in the first recording went slightly wrong, on the second one it was perfect.

Health and Safety Procedures

What Health and Safety Procedures have you covered during the set up of your recording?
I needed to make sure that the wires were not a trip hazard and that the pop shield was in front of the microphone
so that no spit got on or into the microphone

Where are your microphones placed, and how far away?
They are placed 6 inches away from the persons mouth
Why have you chosen this placement?
So that you can hear the vocalists well but cannot hear any plosives

I decided to re-record once as the vocals in the first recording went slightly wrong due to the volume of the piano
overruling the sound of the vocals. On the second one it was perfect as I had the correct volume for the vocals and
piano.
