Adolescents start smoking because of his own accord, see his friends,
taught to smoke by his friends and after seeing cigarette advertising on
television. This study used a cross-sectional design with a correlational
study approach that aims to determine the relationship between
psychological factors, environmental factors and adolescents smoking
behavior at SMP Negeri Kecamatan Percut Sei Tuan. Sample was 196
respondents were taken using accidental sampling technique. The result
showed that more than half of respondents found that the psychological
factors that lead to smoking behavior is included into the medium category
(53,06%), while the more than half of respondents found that the
environmental factors that lead to smoking behavior is included into the
medium category (68,37%). Psychological factors have no significant
relationship with smoking behavior (r = 0,30, p-value = 0,07), whereas
environmental factors have a significant relationship with smoking
behavior (r = 0,96, p-value = 0,003). While the majority of respondents are
included in the category of light smoking behavior (87,25). It is
recommended that psychiatric and community nurses need to consider
doing community outreach that focuses on adolescents to reduce smoking
prevalence. Things to consider is the possibility of other factors that
influence adolescents smoking behavior in addition to psychological
factors and environmental factors, such as personality, family
communication patterns, the effect of the activities sponsored by tobacco
companies and others.
