Indonesia bird flu toll hits 50
An 11-year-old boy has become Indonesias 50th victim of birth flu, health officials say. The child
died at hospital in Tulungagung, East Java, on Monday, after developing a fever and cough and suffering
breathing difficulties. Tests by two laboratories confirmed he had the disease, officials said.
Indonesia has the worlds highest human death toll from the H5Ni virus, and has registered more
bird flu deaths this year than any other nation. Runizar Ruesin, of the health ministrys bird flu information
centre, said the boy had contact with dead chickens.
Chickens have died in his house, he told Reuters news agency. The disease is endemic in
poultry across most of the country, and transmission from poultry is the main cause of human bird flu.
There are fears the virus could mutate to a form which could be easily passed from human to
human, triggering a pandemic and potentially putting millions of lives at risk.
Bird flu has claimed the lives of more than 140 people worldwide since late 2003. Most of the
deaths have been in East Asia, but the virus has also spread to Europe, Africa and South and Central
Asia.

School lunch boxes
At the beginning of the term Ms Jones asked the class to think about all the things about our
school that really bugged us. She said that we couldnt have things like coming to school and doing
homework but that she was more interested in problems that we might be able to solve if we really put our
minds to it. Ms Jones set this problem as a design task in our technology time. To start with my group
couldnt agree on what to do. Then we came up with the problem of our hot lunches being cold and our
drinks being hot by the time they got to us in our lunch boxes. We had to design an make a new lunch
box which kept things hot or cold for longer. First we investigated different materials that might help to
keep the heat or cold in. we tried newspaper, wool, foam and polystyrene. Next, we experimented with
four little boxes, ice cubes and a thermometer. Polystyrene worked the best and we drew plans for our
design in our technology books. After that the whole class compared designs and showed them to the
parents in the canteen. The parents are now deciding on what to do about the school lunch boxes
