INTRODUCTION
This document presents a detailed description of the Domestic and Drinking Water System for
Bauang Diesel Power Plant. This includes the system functions, criteria requirements, details of
system components, controls and instrumentations, operating modes, safety precautions, and
maintenance requirements of the system.
1.1
System Function
The function of this system is to provide the plant complex's potable water requirements primarily
domestic and drinking water. The system is shown in the Flow Diagram-Domestic Water Treatment
System, Reference 6.2 and in Appendix 7.1.
1.2
Criteria Requirements
All water piping shall be executed according to the provisions of the National Plumbing Codes of
the Philippines.
All underground pipes are PVC and all exposed pipes are of G.I. materials.
1.3
The domestic water transfer pump draws water from the cistern. While water is being pumped from
the cistern to the elevated water tank, a chlorinator injects chlorine to the line as it sense water flow.
This is intended to initially kill bacteria/organism and precipitate iron in water. The chlorinator is
equipped with an electronic metering pump for safe, economical, and efficient chlorine injection.
Chlorinated water is stored in the elevated water tank and distributed for domestic consumption.
Water at the tank is maintained at normal level by the level switch which automatically start and

The system is provided with chlorinator to inject chlorine whenever a positive flow is
detected at the pipeline. The chlorinator has an electronic metering pump with a built-in
electromagnetic pressure limitation and a corrosion proof non-conductive plastic housing.
The electronic metering pump draws chlorine solution from a 100-liter plastic tank.
Residual chlorine level is maintained at 0.3 to 0.5 ppm.
2.1.3
Sediment Filters
The system is provided with sediment filters to remove finely divided particles which remain
in the chlorinated water. It consist of various layers of sand filter. The filters are usually
designed for working pressure of 40 psi and are tested for pressure up to 80 psi. The filters
are backwashed once a week to maintain quality of water.
The sediment filter is made of AISI 304 gage 16 stainless steel tank with TIG welded joints
and machine pressed top and bottom caps.
These are installed at the following locations namely: 1) Administration Building, b)
Canteen and 3) Guesthouse.

Level Switch
The elevated water tank is provided with a level switch for the automatic start/stop of
transfer pump.
2.2.2
Controls
The domestic water transfer pumps are provided with "HAND-OFF-AUTO" control mode
selector switch at its control panel at the Fire Fighting House for the manual or automatic
operation of the pumps.

When the control mode selector switch is at "HAND" position, the pumps can be started
manually by depressing its START pushbutton and stop manually by depressing its STOP
pushbutton located at the control panel.
When the control mode selector switch is at "AUTO" position the pumps operate
automatically depending on the water level at the Domestic Water Elevated Tank.
2.2.3
Alarms
Indicating lights are provided in the "MISC. WATER PUMP" panel at the fire fighting plant
to monitor the water level at the domestic water tank.

MODES OF OPERATION
3.1
Start-up
Prior to the starting of the domestic water transfer pump, all equipment associated with the system is
prepared for service and the system valves are line-up for operation. Place the "AUTO-MANUAL"
selector switch in the Domestic Transfer Pump's control switchbox to AUTO position.
3.2
Normal Operation
Under normal operating conditions, the transfer pumps operate automatically depending on the
water level at the domestic water tank.
3.3
Shutdown
If the system has to be shutdown for maintenance of its major equipment, stop the transfer pump by
turning its control switch to MANUAL position.
4.0
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
There are no unusual precautions that need to be taken to safely operate this system.
5.0
MAINTENANCE
A scheduled program of testing and inspection should be maintained to ensure that all system
components and its control systems are in good working condition.
Manufacturer's recommendation for preventive and in-service maintenance and inspection should be
the minimum basis.
