THE GAYTON GROUP OF PARISHES

number. 170

Hello everyone
Until a couple of years ago, our whole family made an annual pilgrimage in May to
beautiful Cornwall. Weeks were counted down from Christmas in excitement. We
stayed in some fabulous houses in lovely places, usually beside the sea. But life
moves on, the boys are older and can't be taken out of school: although we still love
driving, we dont drive the distances we used to and we have new family members
now. Fortunately, we have oodles of photos of gardens, seascapes, vistas and all the
family creating lovely memories.
Remember, no-one can take away, what you've already had and today you will be
making memories for the future. Hope you can make happy ones.

As well as offering vaccination against yellow fever, we can

provide vaccination against diseases such as Hepatitis A,
Typhoid, Meningitis and Rabies. Our practice nurses have
access to Travax, a travel website for health professionals
that provides the latest information about vaccination
requirements and malaria prophylaxis.

If you are planning to travel abroad, make an appointment to

see the practice nurse about eight weeks before departure so
that you can discuss your travel vaccination needs and receive
all the necessary immunisations in good time.

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
To Brexit or not to Brexit?
hat is the question! Our votes (yours and mine) as we go to the Polls next month to
decide whether the UK wishes to remain a member of the European Union will probably
be the most important vote we will make at the polls in our life time. It will affect all of us.
The stay in crowd say:
Jobs We maintain trade relations with the continent and thereby secure jobs.
National Security "It is through the EU that we exchange criminal records and
passenger records and work together on counter-terrorism,"
National Financial Impact The UK's status as one of the world's biggest financial
centres will be diminished if it is no longer seen as a gateway to the EU for the likes of US
banks,
BUT the get out crowd say:
Jobs Control of our own boarders means we decide how many immigrants come to the
UK limit the numbers coming in and there will be more jobs available for those already
here.
National Security Unless we get out we leave the "door open" to terrorist attacks. Open
borders do not allow us to check and control people.
National Financial Impact Free from EU rules a regulations Britain could reinvent itself
AND there would be an immediate cost saving, as the country would no longer
contribute to the EU budget (13bn)
These are just some of the arguments. None of the above statements tell the full story
by any means but you can see my dilemma as there are equally good arguments on
both sides of the campaign so who to believe and who is right? What to do?
I've been pondering this conundrum and there is a big part of me, as a Christian, that
says stay with our friends in Europe; we are better, stronger together and surely we
should aim to be an inclusive nation, welcoming and willing to work with our brothers and
sisters across our boarders in fellowship and love. Together we can form policies and
friendships that benefit everyone and are a beacon of light in the world. After all (on a
much smaller scale admittedly) that is what our group of ten churches are aiming to do
here. But then someone remarked to me that if the EU were embedded in Christian
Values that would be fine but sadly it more often seems to be about power grabbing.
So where does this leave us? To Brexit or not to Brexit? For me that is still the BIG
question! I shall now go off into a quiet room to pray about it and hope to hear God's still
small voice guiding my hand as I place my X. Or should that be
With Love Revd Jane

ASHWICKEN, LEZIATE & BAWSEY NEWS

LEZIATE PARISH COUNCIL REPORT
The Parish Council met on Wednesday 13th April 2016.
The Parish Council, in the past month, has been bombarded by consultations.
Councillors discussed the latest consultations which included the proposed
Community Infrastructure Levy, changes to planning consultation and the
changeover to electronic planning consultation.
The Council felt that the proposed CIL charging structure was divisive and
detrimental to the smaller property developer.
On the planning changes it was felt that Norfolk ALC had put forward a
comprehensive response which Leziate Parish Council agreed to fully endorse.
Leziate Parish Council have been receiving planning consultations electronically for
a few years so the change in receiving hard copies would not be so keenly felt as in
other parishes, however one comment was that local people would not have the
facility to look at plans locally (i.e. at the Clerks house) and indeed without access to
broadband or a computer it was felt this maybe not be a democratic decision. All our
comments will be passed onto the correct sources.
Concerns were raised once again with lake levels both at Leziate and Bawsey. It
was mentioned that the car park along the B1145 is still shut and when it is good
weather the cars are starting to build up along this dangerous stretch of road. Cllr
Coke was asked what progress had been made with the making of a clearway along
here and the re-opening of the car park.
Highway issues continue to be of concern in the parish. It was
reported to Cllr Coke that maintenance of the grippes and drainage is essential and cost
effective as lack of maintenance causes bigger issues.
The vegetation along East Winch Road has still not been cut. The Parish Council are unable
to confirm ownership and asked the County Councillor to look at this as a cut has been
promised for nearly two years and it is causing issues for cars on a relatively narrow road.
Cllr Smith has written an article about Homewatch but received no interest. The scheme will
continue in much the same way however more people need to be involved to make the
success continued.
The Parish Council received a letter from a resident regarding bonfires in the parish. Advice
on when and how bonfires are allowed can be found on the Borough Council's website, but we
would encourage people to be considerate to their neighbours when starting a bonfire.
The next Parish Council meeting is the Annual meeting and we encourage all residents to
attend. There will be an opportunity for everyone to have a chance to talk to the Council. This
meeting will be at 7.30 on 11th May in Leziate Village Hall. We look forward to welcoming you.

Ashwicken Church of England Primary School

Here at Ashwicken Primary the
contractors have nearly completed our
outdoor play areas. Our playing field is
awaiting a brand new astro turf surface
and then we are planning a woodland
outdoor activity area with a wooden
story house, climbing structures,
balancing bars and seating.
The children have managed very well
with the restricted play space over the
past year and it will be fantastic for
them to have more space to run
around and participate in play and
sports activities.

Leziate WI April meeting

We commenced our meeting by singing 'Jerusalem'. Diane West, our speaker from
Norfolk & Waveney Health Trainers, was introduced to us by president, Myrtle
Roberts. Diane gave a wonderful talk including showing us a large poster with ways to
improve our health by exercise and eating healthy foods and to check food labels:
green low, amber medium, red - high, and to eat all in moderation. We were given
booklets to help us, showing the value of our 5 a day fruit and veg. She was thanked by
Myrtle. After our tea and biscuits, the meeting commenced.
Members who attended the WI group meeting
at Swaffham had enjoyed the storyteller Hugh
Lupton from Aylsham. He told us a story from
England about the Swaffham Pedlar and then
a story rom Scotland, Ireland and wales, which
were not so easy to understand. He was a very
good storyteller though.
Members have
booked to attend the Dersingham and Walpole
St Peter flower festivals in June.
The competition of a good health tip was won
by Myrtle Roberts, second Heather Box, third
Wendy Twite. Joan Brown won the raffle. We then sang the National Anthem for the
Queen's 90th birthday, in our red, white and blue and waving our flags. We certainly
know how to enjoy ourselves in Leziate WI.

GAYTON NEWS
Gayton Women's' Institute
Report of our meeting on Tuesday 5th April 2016:Our speaker for the evening for our monthly meeting was Ann Newmeir from
Swaffham who has moved to Norfolk from the south east. She now says that she
feels so lucky to be living in such a beautiful county, which we obviously all agreed
with, particularly us locals!!
She regaled us with tales of her many holidays, in various parts of
the world and the dilemma which we all understood that of
packing the cases to go away and guess whose job that is?
We
women of course, but the men know what is needed and whether it
will all fit in or not!!
Following Ann's entertaining talk we were able to enjoy the
refreshments kindly provided for us by Penny Andrews, Ann Atkin and Debbie Bailey.
Our President, Gillian Smith then advised us that discussion is still taking place as to
the future of the Jubilee Hall, where we have met for many years.
Sandra Brock, our Secretary advised us of the various invitations she had received
for our members to attend other W.I's events in the coming months, one of which
was to join a coach trip to Wroxham Barns. As a group our committee are planning
an outing to Hunstanton for a stroll along the promenade following a fish and chip
supper, a car boot sale, and hopefully an outing to Thursford in November to see the
Christmas Show.
Sixteen of our members were keen to pay for their tickets to attend the Nar Valley
Group Meeting at Swaffham on 13th April to hear Hugh Lupton, a Norfolk Storyteller,
and they weren't disappointed. A truly talented person who managed to keep the
audience enthralled with his tales from each of the four countries that make up the
British Isles.
Raffle Prizes were won by Debbie Bailey, Elaine Clark and Marion Scales.
If you would like to join our happy group then please call our Secretary Sandra, on
01553 636348 who will be very happy to give you any more details you may require.

Gayton Parish Council News

Meeting held 11th April 2016
Vicarage Lane
The Chairman explained that during
the month a grounds maintenance
firm had arrived in the village to
undertake clearance work to a piece
of NCC land in Vicarage Lane. This
was going to involve the removal of
several trees. Following phonecalls
and queries made by Mr King and Mr
Gidney, the Parish Council, with the
help of Cnty Cllr Toby Coke, has
managed to ensure that the trees are
not cut down although the area has
been cleared. It was also learned that
the clearance work was undertaken in
advance of NCC, as landowners of
the site, putting in planning
permission to build 15 dwellings.
There are no further details available
at present.
Planning
The Chairman and Mr Anota
(Borough Councillor) attended both
Borough Council Planning Committee
Meetings on 4th and 5th April where
three major planning applications (40
homes Manor Farm, 24 homes at rear
to Rampant Horse and 24 homes at
Allen's Garage) were considered. The
Chairman and Mr Anota addressed
the Committee and stressed the
parishes concerns about the
cumulative impact of these
applications, notwithstanding those
yet to be considered. They succeeded
in making the Committee considered
all three applications together,
however, after a site visit, the
Committee still approved all three
applications. The Council was also
made aware that all three of the

applications were included in the

Borough Council's calculations to
achieve a 5 year land supply and
without them included, the Borough
would have to start the calculation
process again. The outcome was
disappointing for the Council. The
Council was also disappointed that
only one parishioner from Gayton
attended and spoke at the Planning
Committee Meeting given the level of
concern evident in the Parish.
Streetlighting
The Council discussed the cost of
installing new streetlighting. One new
pole would cost approximately 1450
+ VAT. The issue was discussed
following concerns raised by a
parishioner regarding safety on the
footpath between Vicarage Lane and
Springvale and by another
parishioner regarding safety on
Grimston Road. Before the Council
considers increasing streetlighting in
the Parish, given its currently dark sky
policy, it would like any parishioner
who has an opinion on whether further
streetlighting is required or not to
contact the Council and make their
views known.
Donation to Churchyard
maintenance at Gayton Thorpe
The Council considered and agreed a
donation in principle, however,
awaited a formal request supported
by evidence of cost of grounds
maintenance etc.
Next Parish Council Meeting
The next Meeting will be held at
7.30pm on 9th April 2016 at Gayton
Jubilee Hall. 01553 841387 and will
be preceded by the Annual Parish
Meeting at 7.00pm

Gayton Gift Day

You may be aware that St Nicholas Church is fortunate to have received legacy
money in the past couple of years which is an enormous help in enabling the
maintenance and repair to the fabric of our beautiful and historic building.
However this money cannot be used to support the
day to day expenses of the church and it is a
struggle each year to find the resources to get by.
Hence we always need support from the village if
we are to be able to continue to retain an active
vicar in our parish to provide services such as
Baptisms, Weddings, and Funerals as well as our
regular services and special services at Festival
times and Remembrance Sunday.
You may not be aware that the church needs around 14,000 every year to
cover insurance premiums, heating, lighting, the parish contribution to the
diocese (to help pay for our vicar) and other general running costs.
Fees for weddings and funerals during the year usually amount to around
2,000. Not many people realize that the balance has to come from regular
giving and other donations as the church receives no outside or government
funding.
If you would like to help .

Gayton Gift Day/Week in May!

Gayton Parishioners will find a Gift Aid envelope in their magazine this month. This is a
one-off gift week to raise money for St Nicholas Church, Gayton and your donation
would be greatly appreciated.
Between Saturday 7 May 2016 and Saturday 14 May 2016, envelopes can be deposited
to The Rectory, The Garage/shop, St. Winnifreds, Lynn Road and Howards Butchers.
Or, if you fancy a cup of coffee on Saturday 14 May 10am-11.30am come to Sarah
Renwick's house with your envelope and have a chat!
For more information, ring Sarah Renwick: 01553 636275. Thank you

Summer At Gayton C of E Primary

School
This Summer is set to be a very
busy one at Gayton Primary School.
We sent 2 Rugby Teams to the
Cluster Festival during the first week
back and they performed extremely
well in very challenging, cold and
wet conditions.

They returned to school very muddy

but also very happy coming third
overall in the competition.

Later this term the children will be

competing in Tri-Golf, Cricket,
Tennis and Athletics.
In class the children have started
their new topics. Reception class
discovered a large egg and some
mysterious bones as they start their
Stomp topic to learn about
dinosaurs.
18 | The Gayton Group of Parishes May 2016

In Apples their topic is Plant Power.

They have planted their first
sunflower seeds and will be learning
how to grow and care for plants and
living things. Sycamore Class will
also be learning about plants along
with animals as part of their Living,
Breathing
and
Moving
topic.

Chestnut Class will be travelling

around the world on their topic and
Oak and Willow our oldest classes
will be completing a topic related to
the Olympics.
With all of this going on we will still
find time to carry on with daily Maths
lessons, take part in our end of year
performance and welcome some
special visitors to our school!

Gina's Page: an irregular page of fun things

Our senior daughter SJ, is a vegetarian, but unfortunately, she's not that keen on
vegetables! Although she is a mum herself now (to the two boys), I still try to get her
to eat her veg. by disguising them and this recipe is a classic!
For two servings:
med cauliflower: 2 cups of fresh spinach: 1 can of butter beans drained: cup of
vegetable stock: a med. Red onion: 3 cloves of garlic: 2 tbsps. of sundried
tomatoes packed in oil and drained: 1 tbsp. capers: tsp dried thyme: pine nuts
toasted or not and optional.
Zizz the cauliflower, spinach, onion, garlic and
half the can of beans in a food processor until
fine like rice. (If you don't have a machine, cook
the cauliflower for five minutes in water and then
mash and finely slice the other ingredients).
Heat some oil of your choice in a pan and cook
the veg for about 4 mins. Stirring now and then,
add the stock and cover. On a med heat, cook
for a further 5 mins, stirring occasionally. Chop the tomatoes, add to the pan, along
with the thyme, capers, rest of the beans and nuts. Cook for a further minute .Done!
This is nice on its own, but can be served with anything you like.

Health Tip
If you think you have a cold/sore throat approaching you might like to try this: it
works for us
tsp of Bicarbonate of Soda mixed in cup of warm water taken at bedtime and
again in the morning.
Mahatma Ghandi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced
an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him
rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him what?
(get ready: this is so bad, it's good). A super callused fragile mystic hexed by
halitosis.

EAST WINCH NEWS

East Winch services in May

1st May: 10.00 Benefice Holy Communion.
8th May: 10.30. Cafe style Family service in the Village Hall.
6.00. Evening service at St Cecilia's, West Bilney.
15th May: (Pentecost) 6.00. Holy Communion.
22nd May: (Trinity Sunday)10.30. Morning Worship.
29th May: 10.30. Morning Worship.
Note that the Holy Communion on the 3rd Sunday of the month is now in the evening.
And join us for the first of our three annual services at West Bilney on the 8th May!
East Winch church news.
For those of you wondering what on earth happened to the minute hand on one of the
clock faces, it fell off in a high wind during a Sunday service in February and came to
rest on the north aisle roof, from where it was rescued by our hero of the moment,
David Franklin. It has now been taken to the clock mender, Mr. Michlmayr, and when
he has straightened the hand, he'll abseil down the tower to replace it.
Selling the bric-a-brac advertised in the previous magazine has brought us into
contact with new friends, including Gina, this magazine's editor! There are still some
stoneware jars, the trunk and wicket posts available!
A box of ten wooden pipes has been in the tower sideboard for as long as I can
remember. I took them to the music department at Springwood, where they were
identified as fifes, played sideways like flutes. They were made by Hawkes and Son,
which became Boosey and Hawkes in 1930, so they are older than that.
One has a paper wrapped round it with the name "A.J. Franklin, Station Road". Does
anyone know anything about this person?
Our cafe service in the Village Hall went well, and we hope that next time more
people will come. It's designed for families, but on our first attempt, we found that
people who were unable to attend church because of age and disability came and
enjoyed themselves. We are intending to continue these services on the second
Sunday of every month. Many thanks to Sophie and Lee who donated carpets for the
children to play on.
Flower festival. Advance Notice.
There will be a flower festival at All Saints' Church from 17th - 19th June, on the
subject of Noah's Ark. What we want is fun rather than professionalism, and if you'd
like to have a go, please get in touch with Nell 840814. You might like to have a look
round the church to help you think where to put your arrangement. We welcome
entries from organisations as well as individuals.

Kindness goes a long way

The parable of the good Samaritan teaches us that we should give to those in need,

EAST WALTON NEWS

regardless of whether they are our friends or not. In the parable, Jesus said that a
man was traveling to another city. On the
road he was attacked by bandits, beaten
and had his clothes stolen and left. People
who should have helped him passed by,
but along the Good Samaritan, who felt
compassion, bandaged his wounds and
took him on a donkey to an inn. He paid
the innkeeper to take care of the man until
he recovered.
Each of us has something to offer to
someone in need. We can give our money and our time to charity, be a friend to
someone who is sick or lonely, do volunteer work or choose a service-oriented
occupation.
DEMENTIA ADVENTURE

Memory problems? YOU'RE NOT ALONE!

Quite a few people in our villages have been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer's and no
doubt others are worried about the possibility.
Dementia Adventure is locally based and meet together every couple of weeks and do lots of
different things, often involving eating and drinking at some point! It's all very informal and
people turn up as and when they can.
Recently we have been to Trues Yard in King's Lynn and Ware Hall in Wells next the Sea,
followed by a pub lunch in both cases.
Coming up soon, we have invited a Consultant Psychiatrist to come and answer our questions
about dementia and we are going to the bird reserve at Cley for a guided walk. We are
planning to go on a seal trip from Blakeney when the weather gets a bit warmer, a picnic in
the walled garden at Houghton and a barbecue, amongst other things.
The group has been active for a couple of years now and it is good to share experiences with
others who really understand as well as having a lot of fun and making new friends.
If you or a loved one are affected and would like to socialise informally or become part of a
support group, please phone Lesley on 01485 601220 at any time. If I'm out I will ring you
back!

MAKING THINGS POSSIBLE

REMAP is an established national charity which designs,
makes or adapts equipment for adults and children with
disabilities. Every year REMAP helps about 4,000 UK
individuals in this way, helping them to lead more fulfilling
and independent lives.
All clients are fully consulted about their needs. A piece of
equipment is then designed and made to solve their
specific problem. Some devices are made from scratch
others are modifications or attachments to standard
products.
Sometimes it may only be advice that is required.
Your local panel is based in King's Lynn and covers an area extending from Sutton
Bridge in the west, through Wisbech, Downham Market, Swaffham, Fakenham, to
Wells in the north.
We welcome referrals from individuals, carers or health professionals and we would
particularly welcome enquiries from individuals who are willing to volunteer some of
their time to help us achieve our aims.
Finally, we never ask for payment and our services are free to the user. We do
however welcome voluntary donations to cover costs of materials.
Our local contacts are: John Cole 01485 542412 Brian Kallagher 01553

And Finally my tribute to the very funny Victoria Wood

Once went to one of those parties where everyone throws their car keys
into the middle of the room. I don't know who got my moped but I've been
driving that Peugeot for years.
Lets do it! Lets do it! I really want to rant and rave. Lets go, cos I know,
just how I want you to behave: Not bleakly, not meekly. Beat me on the
bottom with a Womans Weekly. Lets do it! Lets do it tonight! From The
Ballad Of Barry And Freda (Lets Do It), as a frustrated wife tries to get her
hubby in the mood for love.
