Emergency contraception (EC), or emergency postcoital contraception

The emergency contraceptive pill, also known as morning-after pill, morning after pill or pill
Postday , refers to a reduced contraceptive oral female emergency group of drug ulipristal
acetate , mifepristone and levonorgestrel those who could join meloxicam. These drugs
are used to prevent unwanted pregnancies, including teenage pregnancy, from the early
hours and up to 3 days (72 hours) after having sex without protection. The effectiveness in
reducing the risk pregnancy of emergency contraceptive pills is, according to OMS, from
52 to 94 %, being more effective if it is taken after intercourse.
The morning-after pill, as with all oral contraceptives, does not protect against sexually
transmitted infections.
The condom is the only contraceptive method that protects against ETS.
The morning after pill should only be used as a method of emergency and not on a regular
way.

Levonorgenestrel
Levonorgestrel is a steroid hormone that prevents ovulation without having a major effect
on the endometrio not being effective after started of the implementation of the zygote. The
name of morning-after pill is incorrect because it can be used within 3 to 5 days (72-120
hours) after intercourse.
Secondary effects
The most common secondary effect reported was nausea, vomits are much less common
and unusual with pills the next day of levonorgestrel. If a woman vomits within 2 hours of
taking a pill the next day of levonorgestrel alone, she should take a further dose as soon
as possible.
Other common secondary effects were abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and
sensitivity in breasts.
Secondary effects usually do not occur for more than a couple of days after treatment, and
usually they resolve within 24 hours. It is common temporary disruption of menstrual cycle.
If it taken before ovulation, the high doses of progestogen levonorgestrel treatment could
induce progestogen withdrawal bleeding a few days after taking of the pills. One research
found that about half of women using pills the next day of levonorgestrel experienced
bleeding within 7 days of taking the pills. If levonorgestrel is taken after ovulation, this
could increase the duration of the luteal phase, thus delaying menstruation for some days.
If mifepristone is taken before ovulation, may delay ovulation for 3-4 days. These
alterations only occur in the cycle in which the pills were taken the next day, If the
menstrual period women have a delay of two weeks or more, it is advised that a
pregnancy test done.
