Specific Objectives: By the end of the lesson students will be able to

1. solve a linear equation with coefficient of variable being one

involving both addition and subtraction.
2. solve one step linear equation with the variable on one side.
Prerequisites:

Variables, coefficient, equations, expressions.

Materials:

Algebra tiles, square tiles

Methodology:

Demonstrating, storytelling, activity

Procedure:

The teacher will give the students a scenario. John and Tom have 12
marbles altogether. John has 9 marbles how many marbles does tom have?
The students will produce the answer by using algorithm.

The students will be asked to write down the equation

The students will be introduced to algebra tiles

1

The tiles have different color on each side

The square tile is red on the negative side
and yellow on the positive side. The
algebraic tile is red on the negative side and
green on the positive side.

The students will then be asked to model the given equation

The idea of zero pair will then be explained

1

Produces a zero pair

The students will then be asked to get

on one side of the equation

by creating zero pairs.

We add 9 red tiles on the left side of the equal sign and 9 red tiles on the
right side of the equal sign

Each red tile will eliminate a yellow tile

The teacher will do another question with the students

Step 2:

The students will be given the equation

and asked to use the algebraic tiles to model the equation.

The teacher will remind the students about the concept of equality and sharing things equally

The students will put out one tile at a time to

each x.

Example 2:
1

The students will identify that one

tile is left over which he must share for the two x s,

He will have to cut that tile in half.

x=4

Culminating activity:

2

The students will be given the following questions to do using the

algebraic tiles to do the procedures and find the answers

Solve the following equations

1).

2).

3).

4).

The students will be given home work to do to reinforce the concepts learned
Solve the following equations

Find the value of x in the following

1).

2).

3).

The students will be asked to solve the following equation for homework

1).

2).

3).

Evaluation:

The lesson did not go as planned the students were introduced to the algebraic
tiles but the students did not use them to model and solve the equations for
themselves, the teacher has provided each students with a set of tiles to be cut out
for the next class.
There is the usual set of students who are loud and seeks special attention despite
being spoken to on several occasions, the teacher will continue to remind them to
behave in a more classroom appropriate manner.
The teacher will use the next class to show the students how to model the
equations with the tiles then how to solve them.

Specific Objectives: By the end of the lesson students will be able to solve two step linear
equation involving both addition or subtraction and division.
Prerequisites:

Variables, coefficient, equations, expressions.

Materials:

Algebra tiles, projector, document camera

Methodology:

Demonstrating, problem solving, sharing

Procedure:

The teacher will give the students a scenario. John and Tom have 12
marbles altogether. John has 9 marbles how many marbles does tom have?
The students will produce the answer by using algorithm.

The students will be asked to write down the equation

Procedure:

The teacher and students will recap the concepts taught in lesson 1 and 2.
The question will then be given.

Solve the equation

The teacher will go step by step through the instructions to involve steps
of concepts that were previously taught.

The students will model the equation with the teachers assistance

The students were no prepared for class they did not cut out the tiles as
instructed. The teacher used the tiles he had prepared to model an example
and asked a student to draw it on the board. The students were asked to
asked to copy the example then model the equations given solve them and
draw a representation in their books. A number of students are able to
solve the equations algebraically and are resisting the use of the tiles, they
are however encourage to learn how to use the tiles as it will help to make
the concepts clearer.
The teacher will next look at how to formulate expressions and equations
from given situation and solving them using the tiles.

Specific Objectives: By the end of the lesson students should be able to

1. Formulate an equation
2. Solve the equation to find value of unknown

Prerequisites:

worded equations, expressions, perimeter

Materials:

Algebra tiles, square tiles

Methodology:

Demonstrating, reasoning, problem solving

Procedure:

The teacher will go through the homework from the previous lesson. Then
do a recap on perimeter, as the distance around a figure and talk about the
properties of a rectangle.

Step 2

the teacher will draw the rectangle on the board and label two sides as
shown below

x
x+6

The students will be asked to label the other side and write an expression
for the perimeter of the rectangle.
x+6
x

x
x+6

He will use algebraic tiles to show this.

The students will then be asked to complete the question if the perimeter of the
rectangle is 20cm. write an equation in x and then solve the equation to find the
value of x

The students will then solve the equation using the algebraic tiles

4 x 12 20
4 x 12 12 20 12
4x 8
4x 8

4 4

Culminating activity: The students will be given a set of questions to check for understanding
and to reinforce the concepts learnt
