@kevbaggs:
It's strange how important communication skills are when
you get a job and also for you to do well
in business. Join
Toastmasters to improve.
@LarkinLeader: A
member landed a job
with Toastmasters
skills!! Providing
feedback is part of
the job, and he used
speech evaluations
as an example.
@MyPowertalk:
"How do we solve
this?" & "What can
we learn here?" are
more rewarding
questions than "Who
is to blame?".

Meeting Rules of Order Presentation: May 9, 2016 at the public

library, 401 Lee Avenue, 5:45pm
until 7:00pm.

Word Power
Quote of the Month

The antidote to fear is, of course,

courage. Courage is always an act, not
a thought. You cannot think your way
into courage; you act your way into
courage. Asking questions is not always easy, especially tough follow-up
questions or questions that require
deep and intensive soul-searching. A
leader needs to be courageous and authentic and not intimidated by the
rank or expertise or character of the
person to whom the question is
posed. Leading With Questions by
Michael J. Marquardt, page 66 .

The role of the Grammarian at a

Toastmasters meeting is to bring a
word of the day and listen for its
usage. Here are some words we
have used at our club meetings recently:
Collaborate (v.): to work jointly
with others
Discombobulate (v.): to confuse
Manifest (adj.): easy to understand
or recognize
Resolute (adj.): purposeful, unwavering

Judges Training Valdosta

On April 23rd, five Advanced Okefenokee Toastmasters attended judges
training in Valdosta, Georgia led by
Kathleen Bingaman (DTM). This is
some of what we learned about judging Toastmasters speech contests:
1. Judging is subjective yet must be
done without bias.
2. Contest judges should be as anonymous as possible. They should
not turn in their signed ballot by
waving it in the air. The tiebreaking judge should be anonymous even to the other judges.

Janice Williams, with Ritu Linhart, Stephen
Inman, and Gina Marie Senters, who were officially inducted into membership at an Okefenokee Toastmasters club meeting held on
April 13th. At the meeting, all new members
filled key roles. Toastmaster Stephen was the
emcee at the meeting. Toastmasters Ritu and
Gina were part of the Speech Evaluation
Team.
This Toastmasters year, which started July
1st, 8 persons have been inducted as new
club members. We would love the opportunity
to mentor and inspire at least five more new
members before June 30, 2016.

3. There are only 4 reasons a contestant can be disqualified from a

contest: Time; if over or under
the limit. Dues; if unpaid by contestant or club. Devices; if electronic devices are brought into the
sequester room. Plagiarism; if
the speech is not original.
