ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
It is great pleasure for me to make use of this golden opportunity to express my thanks
to Mr.
(PROJECT GUIDE) and all the staff of civil department who had co- operated
me during my project period.
I acknowledge my sense of gratitude and deftness to Mr. RAVINDRA KUMAR
(HOD of CIVIL DEPT.) for assisting me in planning the idea of this project, Dr. M.RAI
SINGHANI (READER OF CIVIL DEPT.) & also the other staff of civil department. Without
their effort & guidance this report will not be very successful. Last but not the least I would
thank all of faculties who helped me very much.

SOIL
Abstract
Soil is defined as the loose top layer of earths surface, consisting of rock and material
particle mixed with decayed organic matter (humus), and capable of retaining water, providing
nutrients for plants, and supporting a wide range of biotic communities. All structures,
buildings, roads, bridges, dams and even life itself is based on the soil. Soil is formed by a
combination of depositional, chemical, and biological processes and plays an important role in
carbon, nitrogen and hydrological cycles. Soil types vary widely from one region to another,
depending on the type of bedrock they overlie on the climate in which they form in wet and
humid region. Soil consists of a solid phase (minerals and organic matter) as well as
a porous phase that holds gases and water.
There is essential to test the bearing capacity of soil for the construction a foundation for
any structure. There are many structures which get collapse due to low bearing capacity of
soil. Foundation transmits the load of the structure to the soil below. The main purposes of a
foundation are, to distribute the load from the building over a large area, to load the
substratum evenly so as to prevent unequal settlement and to take the structure sufficiently
deep into the ground to prevent overturning.
The bearing capacity of soil is defined as the capacity of the subsoil to support the load of
the structure without yielding. The bearing capacity of soil depends upon the characteristics
such as cohesion, friction and unit weight. Soil test helps to determine varying physical and
chemical characteristic of soil, which can vary from place to place and from layer to layer
even within the limits of the proposed structure. Soil characteristics can change considerably

within a small area. This is as important as the entire project itself that may cause long term
complications and may result to loss of life and property, endanger residents, tenants and
damage other neighbor properties. The extent of exploration depends on whether the area is
built up or not and size of the structure.
