Part II: April 9th April 17th

Before theSkype meeting

1-4-201623:20:15.7+02:00 - 3 -

You and your groupmates are going to enter a one-minute film contest. At the beginning
ofthe contest you will be given a list of what must be included inyour film. This list will
beposted to the classroom Notice Board by your teacher.
Participants must:

create a storyboard for their 1-minute film in any genre or style

give their film a unique title
produce a presentation pitch for their film including shooting location

Once the list has been posted, prepare an oral storyboard of your own ideas to present
toyour groupmates. Then, in the Skype call, present your ideas toyour groupmates.
Wheneveryone has explained their ideas for the 1-minute film, agree o
n the one(s) your group willuse for the storyline or brainstorm some others.

NB: The group spokesperson should take note of the ideas you all agree
on.
Steps to follow
Write to your group in Debat in your Group Work Space to:

Agree on a day and time to meet with the others in Skype.

At least one of you should record the group conversation . In order to do this,
you can use Talk Helper (Windows users), Ecamm Call Recorder (Mac users), or Skype
Call Recorder (Linux users). For technical advice on these applications, go to Skype
Information ( http://cv.uoc.edu/adf/~s_eao_0015_u03/Eines/Informacio_Skype_Cat.html
).
At the agreed time, one member of the team should call the others into a Skype video
conference call. At least one person (preferably two) should record the video conference
call and they should be using headphones . Together you should follow the Skype
speaking activity instructions that appear below as well as the ones in this screensharing tutorial document .
Important reminders:
Introduce yourself clearly at the beginning of the call, the beginning of each
presentation and use your group mates names as much as possible during the Q&A
session so that the teacher and your classmates can identify who is speaking when they
listen to the recording.
Please note that you should NOT READ from a script . Having minor variations
in the vocabulary from what you wrote in Part II is fine, in fact these variations are
preferable to sounding like you are reading aloud. Remember that naturalness of your

1-4-201623:20:15.7+02:00 - 4 -

intonation is one of the characteristics that will be taken into account when evaluating
your presentation. Your interaction with your group mates is also important.
Post the recording to the Forum
The person who recorded the Skype call should send the video file or a link to the video
upload to the CA3_Brainstorming folder in the classroom Forum. We highly encourage
you to upload the video to Youtube so that you can just send a link to the forum. For
instructions on how to do that readthe following Youtube tutorial document .
Dont forget to write your group name in the subject line of the email.
ASSESSMENT
40% of the mark for CA3 will be based on your main speaking contribution
using the following criteria:

Completion of the task

Q&A session (asking and answering questions)

Effectiveness of the communication (Is your message clear?)

Pronunciation, intonation, pacing and pausing

Use of grammar

Use of vocabulary and expressions from the unit

For more details, see the Oral assessment criteria Skype document .

Important information for speaking activity

Before you do the speaking activity, please note the following:

1-4-201623:20:15.7+02:00 - 5 -

We do not expect perfection, so do not worry too much about making

minor mistakes. The most important thing is to demonstrate that you
are able to communicate your ideas effectively in English.

The activity should take you approximately 15 minutes to complete.

(Approximately 3 minutes per presentation and 1 2 minutes per Q&A
session.) However, it is perfectly acceptable if you finish in a little less
time.

You should speak only in English. If you dont know a particular word
or expression, try to describe what you want to say using other words,
especially using phrases from the Innovations & Inventions materials.
For example:

A: anderrit has thiserrspecial kind of light, the kind of light that

doesnt heat up and lasts forever.
B: Yeah, I now what kind you mean. OR Yeah, LED lights.

Listen carefully to what your team-mates say. If you dont understand

something, ask for clarification. For example,
Could you repeat that last part, please?
What does ____ mean?
Could you explain what you mean by L-E-D lights, please?

Where appropriate, you should try to use some of the language for
presentations that you learned in this unit: Part 2 > Inventions >
Speech Feature.

Technical Advice
Your teacher will send some extra technical advice via the noticeboard at the beginning
of this CA.
Instructions for Skype activity
Remember to introduce yourself clearly at the beginning of the call, and use your
group mates names as much as possible during the call so that the teacher can
identify who is speaking when he/she listens to the recording.
1. Before your conference call, when you are revising your group mates texts, think
of two questions that you would like to ask about each presentation. Do not tell your
group mates what the questions are but be ready to ask them in the Q&A session of
the presentation.
2. Give your presentation using what you have learned from Units 1 & 3 to help you.
Remember the maximum number of slides is
3. Listen to your group mates questions and answer them as clearly as you can.

1-4-201623:20:15.7+02:00 - 6 -

When you have finished, one of the members of the team should send the recording of
your conversation to the CA3_Skype_Film folder in the Forum either as a file or a link to
the video uploaded. Please rename the file as follows:
CA3-Student1-Student2-Student3 (e.g., CA3-mgrau-jlopez-fmartin)
(Please put the students in the order that they give their presentations.)

Part III: April 18th April 25th

In this part you will be working inWikispaces in yourGroup Work Space.
Remember, to help your group run smoothly you should:

Check your Group Work space as frequently as possible so that group decisions can
be made in a timely manner.

Communicate with each othervia the Group Work spaceas part of the mark for
this CA comes from how you work together and it is important that the teacher has
evidence of this in the Group Work space.

1. Based on your ideas from the Skype call, write a 300 word story or script for your
film together. You should each write about 100 words. When you have finished, consider
if all the information there? Do you need to expand on anything, remove or rearrange? Is
there any dialogue to be included? Then, annotate the script with scene headings, stage
direction etc.
2. Next, from your script create a visual storyboard pitch that you will post to the
CA3_Film_Pitc h folder in the Forum. You can use one of the templates provided or
create your own using Power Point slides, a link to the presentation in Google docs,
Presi (or similar). Remember to include a script and instructions to the actors as well as
location details.
Below is an example slide using one of the templates available in the classroom:

3. Post the presentation or the link to the CA3_Film_Pitch folder in the Forum.

1-4-201623:20:15.7+02:00 - 7 -

In order to write your text:

1 Open a new page in your groups Wiki. In the page name include your groups name
and the name of your film
E.g. Sunflowers The grandfather clock
2 Decide how you will divide the writing and then write the text together. (300 words
approximately)
3 Critically read your groups draft and offer comments on each of these areas:
-the content
-the clarity of the message
-the organization of ideas
-accurate and clear use of language
You dont need to correct the draft, but you can indicate if there is something that is not
clear, and make suggestions for improvement. Use the Comments button to do this.
4 Finalise the text, taking into account your group mates comments, then ask your
teacher to check it as well.
5 From the 300 word text, prepare a visual pitch using Power Point or a link to the
presentation in Google docs or similar, including a script and instructions to the actors.
6. Together revise your presentation.
7. When your group has finished, the spokesperson should send the Power Point or the
link to the CA3_Film_Pitch folder in the Forum indicating in the subject line your group
name and the title of your film.
E.g. Sunflowers The grandfather clock
