Pastoral Corner
How does the Holy Spirit guide the Church? In the first reading from Acts of the Apostles we hear that some people
were teaching in Antioch that new converts to faith in Christ must first become Jews. They would thus be following
the actions of Jesus and the Apostles who were circumcised and who followed the 613 Jewish commandments.
However, demanding that Gentile converts must first become Jewish would severely limit the spread of Christianity.
Paul and Barnabas carried their mission to the Gentiles. They believed that the Holy Spirit had already accepted these
converts. To referee this issue, they went up to Jerusalem to confer with Peter and the Apostles. This discussion came
to be known as the Council of Jerusalem.
Through the powerful testimonies of Paul and Barnabas the Holy Spirit worked through the collaborative process to
bring about a unified position of the Gentiles.
The results of this Council were written in a letter and sent by a carefully selected delegation of disciples, including
Paul and Barnabas to the community in Antioch. It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any
burden beyond these necessities, namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meats of strangled
animals, and from unlawful marriage.
How bold they were to SPEAK FOR the Holy Spirit!
The Holy Spirit guides the church through collaborative dialogue in prayer. The Synod on the Family over the past two
years was conducted in a process like that. Pope Francis wrote the final report, an Apostolic Exhortation entitled Amoris
Laetitia (the Joy of Love) that summed up the process, in which he quotes elegantly and in an extended fashion the
reports from Dioceses all over the world. He doesnt come down with a new teaching, but rather insists on a style of
decision-making that pays attention to the Local churches as well as the central governance (the Vatican).
Subsidiarity is the principle that says decisions should be made at the lowest level in the organization possible. Only
issues that affect the whole church should be referred to the Pope. Issues like the question of Gentile converts. In
that situation the Pope (Peter) had to intervene because one group of Jewish disciples was imposing an unnecessary
burden on others.
But Pope Francis continues: Not all discussions of doctrinal, moral or pastoral issues need to be settled by interventions
of the magisterium. Inculturation allows for issues to be handled at the appropriate level. Each country or region
can seek solutions better suited to its culture and sensitive to it's traditions and local needs.
Jesus said to the Apostles, The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you
everything and remind you of all that I told you.
