Session #1: Man Coverage Techniques
Slide Technique : is used against a WR on the LOS. We want to be aggressive but our
goal is to disrupt not stop the WR.
• Alignment
○ Flat back and bent knees
○ Feet shoulder width with weight on balls of the feet
○ Elbows in tight but relaxed
○ Hands cocked and ready to shot
○ Thumbs up
○ Eyes on the WR hip
Inside or outside based on leverage
○ One arms length away from WR
This prevents offsides
• Leverage
○ Could be inside or outside based on WR split
Inside if split is 7+ yards
Outside if split is less than 7
○ Also based on coverage help
○ Technique based on call
• Footwork
○ Slide near foot in direction of release
○ Replace with the far foot
Stay square and in front of WR
○ Impede progress no free releases
• Hands
○ Jam near hand to the near #
“Shock”
• May or may not actually hit
Stay in front and move your feet
○ Replace near hand with far hand
Aim for near # or armpit
Thumb up
Elbow locked
“Control”
• Inside or outside breaks
○ Drive 2 hard steps to near hip then spot the ball
• If receiver crosses your face
○ IF WR is in the framework of your hips
Flip hips and execute Control technique
○ Out of Frame
Baseball turn
• “Throw wrist to your hip”
• During the route coaching points
○ Read the near hip of the WR during the route
Know where your opponents break points are
• 3step
• comeback zone
○ Be in phase with WR
Your hip and shoulder on top of theirs
○ Once clear of the comeback zone use “Lean and Locate”
Force WR off red line
○ Slant Cut
Wash him down and stay on the up field shoulder
Motor Mirror Technique : is basically the same as “slide” but is used vs. a slot/flanker.
• Use a baby back pedal to be in position to execute “Shock and Control”
Off Man Technique:
• Alignment
○ 1x8
sit on the 3 step
Stay on top of WR
○ Eyes on the QB to read 3step
Keys
• Ball in high position
• QB shoulders level
• Watch for off hand to come off the ball
Drive on the up field shoulder
○ Once we know it is not three step eyes on WR
○ Inside foot back to help protect your inside
○ Maintain 3 yard cushion
Don’t turn and run till this cushion is threatened
Lean and Locate drill
Corner works his tech and plays the fade or fade stop
Coaching point for Free Safety is that he reads the Center Guard Triangle and should
favor a slot side.
Session #2: Cover 2 in a Multiple 43
Philosophy:
• Cover 2 complements their 1/4 coverage bas scheme
• OLB will carry the seam route
• MLB will cancel or squeeze underneath routes
• WR must be rerouted
Rules
• Sam and Will LB
○ Make a “gone” call to the Mike if you are displaced
○ Carry #2 vertical unless “Smash” call by corner
○ #2 releases Vertical and breaks in
undercut his route
squeeze the window
Key QB to flow
○ #2 releases inside or outside quickly
zone drop
• Mike
○ Vs. 2x2
Cancel and squeeze underneath routes to CB
• Your OLB are carrying the seams
If no underneath routes play the check downs
Vs. #3 to the flat MLB will carry seam and gives “Push” call to
OLB and that sends him to the flats.
○ Vs. 3x1
Carry #3 Vertical
• If you get any under from the trips side pass it off to the
will
• If the solo goes under squeeze him to the CB
• Safeties
○ 13 to 14 yards deep
○ adjust with the #1
start on the hash but no wider than #3
○ Key EMO to #1
○ Responsibilities
Run to secondary: support
Run away: pursuit
Pass: Deep 1/2
PA: Check #1 first
○ Coaching points
See #1 Release
• Outside release
○ Accelerate backpedal and gain width
• Inside Release
○ Work vertical and climb the hash
• Corners
○ Align 5 yards off and on the outside shoulder
○ Parallel stance
○ Keys
Emo, #2, #1
○ Responsibilities
Run To: Primary force
Run Away: deep pursuit
Pass: Flats
• But drop until a threat shows in front of you
○ Coaching points
Be sure to reroute #1
Sink until threatened
Smash Call
• Versus any hitch action in front off you call “smash”
○ This should have the OLB drive on the hitch
○ You sink to shrink window to the deep corner
