MATB133 Statistics for Engineers

Question 1 [12 marks]

In a college there are 148 students studying Physics, Mathematics or Arts courses. Of these
students, 89 wear glasses and the others do not. There are 30 Physics students of whom 18 wear
glasses. The corresponding figures for the Mathematics students are 68 and 44 respectively.
Shows the above information in a table.
[2 marks]
A student is chosen at random, find the probability that this student:
(a)
(b)

is studying Arts subjects

does not wear glasses, given that the student is studying Arts subjects.

[2 marks]
[2 marks]

Amongst the Physics students, 80% are right-handed. Corresponding percentages for
Mathematics and Arts students are 75% and 70% respectively.
(c)
(d)

Find the probability that this student is right-handed.

[3 marks]
Given that this student is right-handed, find the probability that the student is studying
Physics subjects.

Question 2 [9 marks]
The alignment between the magnetic tape and head in a magnetic tape storage system affects the
performance of the system. Suppose that 10% of the read operations are degraded by skewed
alignments, 5% of the read operations are degraded by off-center alignments, and the remaining
read operations are properly aligned. The probability of a read error is 0.01 from a skewed
alignment, 0.02 from an off-center alignment, and 0.001 from a proper alignment.
(a)
(b)
(c)

What is the probability of a read error?

[5 marks]
If a read error occurs, what is the probability that it is due to a skewed alignment?
[2 marks]
If a read error occurs, what is the probability that it is due to an off-center alignment?
