Position purpose
A Research Fellow Level A will make a contribution towards the research effort of the Engineering department most
appropriate to the appointees expertise and qualifications. They will be expected to develop research expertise through
the pursuit of defined projects relevant to the particular field of research.

Reporting Line: The research fellow reports to Associate Professor Matthew Weyland.

Supervisory responsibilities: No supervisory responsibilities associated with positions at this level.

The Department of Materials Science Engineering aims to provide the highest quality teaching and research. We have
been one of the most research-active departments within Monash, with much success in obtaining significant funding. Our
key research focus involves physical metallurgy, metal-working, materials characterisation, polymer engineering,
ceramics, corrosion and mechanical properties. In terms of our teaching, the enabling aspects of materials engineering
combined with the multidisciplinary nature of skills learned means our graduates are in high-demand across industry as

Key result areas and responsibility


Research

Conduct research under limited supervision either as a member of a team or, where appropriate, independently.
Produce or contribute to conference and seminar papers and publications from the research;

Limited administrative functions primarily connected with the area of research of the academic;

Development of a limited amount of research-related material for teaching or other purposes with appropriate
guidance from other staff;

Occasional contributions to teaching in relation to his/her research project(s);

Experimental design and operation of advanced laboratory and technical equipment or conduct of advanced
research procedures;

Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is
connected and/or at departmental and/or faculty meetings and/or membership of a limited number of committees;
and

Advice to postgraduate students within the field of the staff members research.

General Responsibilities

Maintain involvement in professional activities, including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences
and seminars within the field.

Administrative functions primarily connected with the research responsibilities and the supervision of students
(honours and postgraduate).

Key selection criteria


Essential
1. PhD in electron microscopy, or in materials / nanotechnology development with a strong transmission electron
microscopy (TEM) component.
2. Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas in electron microscopy; aberration correction,
scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), image simulation,
electron diffraction or high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).
3. Willingness to travel for collaboration.
4. Demonstrate an ability to conduct outstanding research and scholarship in an independent manner, and in
association with other academic staff and students.
5. Demonstrate an ability to work within an inter-disciplinary environment across a range of related projects.
6. Possess excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills to enable effective interaction with
students, academic and professional staff within the department and University.
7. Potential to successfully supervise postgraduate research students.

Desirable
8. Experience with the growth, properties and chemistry of oxide materials.
9. Developed skills in preparation of cross sectional TEM specimens from epitaxially grown materials.
10. Demonstrated skills in scientific programming in one or more of the following areas; image simulation, density
functional theory, image processing and generation of crystal structures.
11. Knowledge of thin film growth techniques and technology.
12. Willingness to work on multidisciplinary problems and learn new skills / techniques

Other job related information

The position is in a grant shared with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, so it will involve
occasional travel for experimental work, and/or progress meetings.
