What has been the most important enterprise skill required by


the owner of a local business?
Pizzeria Pappagone
The business I have chosen is Pizzeria Pappagone. This business was cofounded by two friends both called Marco and started on October 4th 1998.
Pizzeria Pappagone has been
blooming success and has had
a
large amount of success and
the business is still growing.
Originally, it was a restaurant
and pizzeria but in 2002 they
realised that the business was
growing rapidly as they were
receiving more customers and
the size of their business
location was too small so they
decided to take a risk and
bought the location next door to their restaurant and turned it into a bar
where people could sit down and enjoy a cocktail or a bottle of wine whilst
waiting for their food.

Pizzeria Pappagone is an independent business located a busy high road
in Finsbury Park at 131 Stroud Green Road. The neighbouring business
competitors is La Porchetta Pizzeria which is a take away pizza shop.

What enterprise skills are used in Pizzeria Pappagone?

Take risks- Taking calculated risks can push your business forward
as you aim to lose it all to have it all as there's always a chance that
customers may reject the product or service and that a loss will be
made just to risk a product success. If you take a risk, there is a
possibility that you could either gain or lose customers; this means
your company is at risk of receiving a bad name as well as the
chance of receiving a good name. The cofounders of pizzeria took a
risk by buying another location for their business just so that
customers could go to the bar whilst they were waiting for their
food. This is because, there was no guarantee that the customers
actually wanted to go to the bar whilst they waited. Had the risk not
been a successful one, the company would have paid out more
money than they would have received, this could have led to loss of
profit and it could also have led to the company being below the
break-even point. Luckily for pizzeria, the risk that the co-founders
had taken paid off as they gained more customers and the business
grew.

Showing initiative- This is useful in a business as successful


entrepreneurs have to be forward thinkers as they have to take a
leading step to make a business more successful. Showing initiative
links to taking risks as using your initiative triggers innovation and a
risk has to be taken in order to produce or manufacture the
products, this is because there is no guarantee that the customers
will like it, the product could either bloom or be in decline. In terms
of Pizzeria Pappagone, they showed initiative by thinking ahead and
creating the bar before the customers started to complain and
perceive the uncomfortable, cramped wait for their pizzas as bad
customer service, they also used their initiative. Showing initiative
can also be linked with creative thinking as the pizzeria
demonstrated when they added different recipes in their pizzas.
That shows that they used their initiative as they realised that they
have to think creatively by adding more recipes so that they can
gain more customers whilst keeping the interest of their initial
customers.
As a result of the co-founders thinking ahead and also think
creatively, Pizzeria Pappagone will most likely gain more customers
as the neighbouring competitors havent thought creatively.
Thinking creatively will allow the pizzeria to differentiate itself from

its competitors; this could lead to repeat purchase and customer


loyalty.

Leadership- Effective leadership skills are essential in order to


achieve goals in a business. To be successful; leaders must be able
to inspire, motivate and direct their team. Leadership related to the
pizzeria as the co-founders would have to lead and manage their
employees in order to run a successful business. The co-founders
would also have to motivate their employees so that theyre
enthusiastic and can provide the customers with good customer
service. The co-founders demonstrating good leadership would also
help a business to be successful as they would be able to reduce
variation in process performance by ensuring their people know
what to do and how to do it. Therefore, the business has security. If
a business didnt have a leader there would not be a lot of control
and decision making wouldnt be imminent. This may also cause
customers to lose faith in the business.

Undertaking new ventures and spotting opportunities- This is also an


important enterprise skill to have and it is something that the cofounders of the pizzeria have demonstrated. This has been
demonstrated in the co-founders ability to spot that there was a gap
in the market for a pizzeria with a bar as the customers have
responded well to it and it is contributing to the pizzerias blooming
success. The co-founders of the pizzeria also undertook the venture
of realising that there is a gap in the market for Italian cuisine.

What gave you the idea of opening up a Pizzeria Pappagone?


Marco and I used to make fresh pizza's at home when we were younger and our
families loved it. I realised that there was only one local pizzeria in this area at
the time, this pizzeria charged high prices but still gained a lot of customers as
there was no competition, but it didnt lose money because pizza was a local
favourite. As I analysed the eating habits and ages that eat pizza most and it was
under 35 which there are a lot of in this area and I realised that setting up a
business like this would be a success as it has been.

What enterprise skill would you consider to be the most


important in relation to the success your business so far and
why?
"The enterprise skill that is considered to be most important is to think
creatively.This is because we gain more customers than the local businesses as
they haven't though as creatively as Pizzeria Pappagone. As our customers have
noticed this it has lead to many customers coming back and introducing new
people to our business."

How long after the opening of your first shop did you decide it
would be a good idea to undertake a new venture and open the
bar?
"We opened the bar in 2002, 4 years after the we originally opened Pizzeria
Pappagone. We decided to do this as we began to have customers flooding in
and out of the business so we decided to get additional so that the business
could grow."

How do you advertise your business?


"The way that Pizzeria Pappagone advertise the company is by passing out fliers,
a good website, online ordering and through word of mouth from the current
customers."

What separates your business from its competitors?


"The main thing that separates us from competitors is mainly the variety of
recipes, the bar for customers whilst waiting for food to be served and
outstanding customer service."

How do you tend to your customers needs and wants?


"We tend to our customers needs and wants through good customer services. We
aim for them to enjoy their time in Pizzeria Pappagone by treating them with
100% respect and giving them the best possible food they can eat. To tend their
wants we have a suggestion box where they can inform us what they want and
occassionally having questionnaires to answer."

The customers of Pizzeria Pappagone were asked how long they had
been customers of the co-founders business.
This data demonstrates that the companys use of enterprise skills
such as creativity in their menu as well as their risk taking in
regards to deciding to expand the business, has paid off as they
have managed to keep their customers interested in their business.
This is represented in the data as 10% of the customers have been
using the service provided by the restaurant for 6 years or more and
20% have been using the service provided by the business for 35years whilst 40% of the customers have been customers for 1-2
years.
The co-founders use of enterprise skills have also managed to keep
up to date and catch the eye of new customers as 30% of the
customers that filled out this questionnaire had only been customers
for 0-6months.

The customers of Pizzeria Pappagone were then asked if they were happy
with the quality of food provided for them at the restaurant.
This data demonstrates how the use of showing initiative by keeping up
with customer needs and wants was effective as 100% of the customers
agreed that they were happy with the quality of food provided by Pizzeria
Pappagone.
This reflects the leadership of the co-founders as they were able to
motivate their employees to perform to the best of their ability which is
what has had a good effect on the customers as all of them were happy
with the quality of food produced by the restaurant.

The customers were then asked if they were happy with the quality of the
service presented to them by Pizzeria Pappagone.
This data also shows that the leadership skills by the co-founders of the
business are working well as if 90% of the customers have expressed that
they are happy with the service, it must mean that the co-founders have
motivated their staff and that their staff show enthusiasm whilst providing
the services.
Despite the 10% of the customers who answered the questionnaire, it is
reflected that the initiative being shown by Pizzeria Pappagone is working
as an advantage as they have spotted that if their staff are motivated, the
more enthusiasm the staff will put into their job roles which will affect the
customers. If the customers receive good service, it mirrors the business
of Pizzeria Pappagone in a positive light.

The customers were then asked if they feel that there is a difference
between Pizzeria Pappagone and their competitors.
The use of creative thinking and undertaking new ventures by the cofounders of this business has been positively mirrored as 80% agreed that
there was a difference between Pizzeria Pappagone and their competitors.
The creativity in the menu and the creativity of the ideas in the restaurant
such as having a bar have been noticed by the customers as it has
created a barrier or a level between Pizzeria Pappagone and its
competitors.
Another possible factor that may have separated the Pizzeria from its
competitors is the customer service as good customer service makes the
customer feel welcome and comfortable.
Although the majority of the feedback from the customers of the Pizzeria
was positive, 20% of the customers gave negative feedback. This may
highlight that the co-founders of the Pizzeria need to tend to their
customers needs more.

The customers were then asked if they were happy with the prices
presented to them at Pizzeria Pappagone.
The data shown in the chart above shows that despite the 10% that said
they were not happy with the prices, the co-founders were able to decide
on prices that are suitable and affordable to the majority of the people
that live in the area of the business as 90% agreed that they were happy
with the prices.
The co-founders of the Pizzeria clearly used initiative as they understood
that they would need to come up with prices that the customers in the
area would be able to afford as if they cannot afford the prices, they
wouldnt be able to shop there. That could lead to the business going into
the decline stage of the business cycle as they would not be making any
profit. This would also put them below the break-point on a break-even
graph.

The customers of Pizzeria Pappagone were then asked if the restaurant


cater to their needs and wants.
The feedback received for this question was extremely positive as 100%
of the people that filled out the questionnaire agreed that the restaurant
catered to their needs and wants.
This reflects the co-founders enterprise skill of using their initiative as
they have understood that in order for their business to be a success, they
need to make sure their customers are happy.

The data presented in the chart above reflects the overall success of the
business and the co-founders use of enterprise skills as 100% said that
they would. It also reflects the amount of good publicity the company may
get as all of their customers all willing to recommend them to a friend or
family member.
The co-founders enterprise skills are mirrored in this data as the
enterprise skills used by the co-founders are what has made the business
such a success.

with the way the co-founders were running the business or If they though
that there were any improvements that could be made.
The data illustrates that 70% of the customers were happy with the way
the co-founders were running the restaurant and only 30% said there
could be improvements made.
I believe that the co-founders of Pizzeria Pappagone have done their best
to cater to customers needs and wants as it was clearly demonstrated by
the results of question 6, because of that, I do not believe that the cofounders of the restaurant have neglected any of their enterprise skills
such as showing initiative and making sure that their customers are
happy.

The overall results of the questionnaire have proved to be a positive one, I


believe that the contribution of all of the enterprise skills such as; taking
risks, undertaking new ventures, thinking creatively, showing initiative
and having leadership skills have contributed to the success of Pizzeria
Pappagone.
