As the boxers stepped out of the smoke-filled tun-

Naval Base Ventura County should be able to
help with your storage needs. We have RV storage
sites at both Port Hueneme, with 130 spaces, and at
Point Mugu, where our newly opened site has over
500 spaces. There are 20-, 30- and 40-foot spaces

traditional RVs, boats, trailers, flatbed haulers and
watercraft storage haulers. Automobiles and camp-
ers with shells are not allowed, unless the camper
shell has an above-cab area.

Seabees face hidden dangers on the ice
Oct. 1, 2010, marks the 10-year anniver-
sary of the establishment of Naval Base
Ventura County, the official date that Na-
val Air Station Point Mugu and Construc-
tion Battalion Center Port Hueneme com-
bined under a single commander.
In recognition of the anniversary, The
Lighthouse is publishing these “Looking
back” items that detail the history of the
two bases leading up to their unified com-
mand and that recall the major news of the
last 10 years.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of
Operation Deep Freeze, the U.S. Navy
Seabee Museum in Port Hueneme opened
a new exhibition titled, “Seabees on Ice:
Antarctica, 1947-1993.” Museum Curator
Kim Crowell wrote this piece at that time,
but it was never published.

Second of three parts
In order to detect crevasses, Seabees
used equipment, primitive by today’s sen-
sitive technology, to pick out a safe route
through the ice fields. More than once,
they failed to detect any danger. Richard
T. Williams, CD3, USN, a heavy equip-
ment driver of the MCB (Special), was
killed when his D8 Caterpillar fell through
a bridge that had been placed over a crack
in the ice at McMurdo Sound.
A few weeks later, tractor driver Max
R. Kiel fell victim to a huge crevasse also
while driving a D8 tractor.
In memory of these men, the Air Oper-
ating Facility at McMurdo Sound was
named Williams Air Operating Facility,
and the airstrip at Little America V be-
came Max Kiel Airfield.
Even in the final years of Operation

The facility provided an additional
30,000 square feet to the existing Building
53 complex. It included new control rooms

ranges throughout the NAVAIR team and

Antarctica. The Seabees had a presence on the frozen continent from 1955 to 1993.
Deep Freeze, Seabees feared undetected
crevasses and weak ice as they experienced
more than one close call with men, wom-
en and equipment falling into crevasses.
Tasked with the construction and sup-
port of the United States’ scientific bases
in Antarctica, the first battalion took re-
sponsibility for getting 20,000 measure-
ment tons of materiel and equipment to
the frozen continent. Loaded on 13 ships,
these raw materials emerged from icy foun-
dations to materialize as the base stations
at the Bay of Whales and on Ross Island
in the first summer season — November
1955 to January 1956 — while three more
were built up in the second summer sea-
son.

called “Smooth Move.” This class covers
the types of moves, best practices, bene-
fits, allowances (yes, you have weight re-
strictions), financial reimbursements and
much more. The value of this class cannot
be overstated. You’ll add to your milspeak
vocabulary the necessary acronyms as-
sociated with moving (see below). If you

There are two myths regarding mov-
ing.
First, you may hear that you can “make
money” on a DItY move. This can be true.
However, before you start counting on
that money, let’s consider a few things.
Have you ever driven a truck or towed
a vehicle or trailer before?
Will you be traveling across mountains,
in the winter, etc?
Who will help you pack and load your
truck? More important, who will help you
unload the truck at your new duty sta-
tion?
If you sustain damages in the move, that
is your loss. If damaged by the military
contracted movers, you will receive re-
placement value of damages.

Ventura County Government Center on
Thursday, April 22, in support of victims’
rights.
This is the third year the base has had a
presence at the District Attorney’s Victims’
Rights Event in Ventura, held in conjunc-
tion with National Crime Victims Rights
Week.
“We want to let the community know
that there are services for victims of sexual
assault in the military,” explained Melissa
Ramirez, who heads up the Sexual Assault
Prevention and Response (SAPR) program
on base.

march in support of victims’ rights.

military contracts with the best. If the

add-on business, period. And any losses
or damage you may sustain are covered
at replacement value.
Moving is considered one of the top
five stressors, whether military or civilian.
“Getting your knowledge on” is the best
way to execute a smooth move. Take ad-

Naval Base Ventura County helped
clean up the planet during Earth Day fes-
tivities this month.
Three tons of residential electronic
waste – primarily computers, cell phones
and television monitors – were kept out
of landfills thanks to the first residential
e-waste recycling event in recent memory
at the base.
A similar event for government e-waste
kept another 22,000 pounds of e-waste
out of landfills.
And a beach cleanup on April 13 yield-
ed a Dumpster full of trash.
“We wanted to show that the Navy does
a good job of environmental stewardship
in addition to carrying out its mission,”
said Dan Shide, installation environmen-
tal program manager and one of the co-
ordinators of the Earth Day activities.
Shide’s comments came as he manned
a booth next to the beach cleanup area at
Point Mugu.
“Hopefully events like these will increase
people’s awareness of Earth Day and the
resources surrounding us – their impor-
tance and significance,” he said.
Sixty-four vehicles pulled up to the cor-
doned-off area in the NEX parking lot at
Port Hueneme for the residential e-waste
recycling event on April 15, leaving behind
5,000 pounds of computer monitors, 108
television monitors and 1,500 pounds of
miscellaneous waste such as cell phones

Keep kids, schools informed as deployment approaches
As Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert, the vice
chief of naval operations, visited Naval
Base Ventura County (NBVC) recently,
his message was made very clear: Mission
readiness must include family readiness.
As NBVC community support services
work together to ensure family readiness,
school-age children and their schools are
an important piece of the family readiness
puzzle.
Readying a child for deployment and
homecoming goes beyond making paper
chains and marking off days on a calen-
dar. It is also not safe to assume that when
your child leaves the home in the morning
to attend school, the family’s deployment
stressors stay at home. Also important to
children, families and teachers is knowing
about the resources available to them be-
fore, during and after a deployment.
The key to preparing a child is to keep
communication flowing in the family.
Don’t let the children be the last to know
that mom or dad is leaving for deploy-
ment. Developmentally appropriate, hon-
est discussions are necessary to keep com-
munication flowing freely in a family.

Typically, adults have some understand-
ing of why a command is being deployed
— they have a mission, it is their duty to
complete the mission successfully, and it
will, short-term or long-term, benefit our
country’s security. However, children can’t
always grasp such a concept. This is why
communication between parents and chil-
dren is essential.
As parents, don’t be afraid to respond
to their concerns. If parents are apprehen-
sive about responding to concerns brought

up by their child, know that support ser-
vices are available for both parents and
children to help them better understand
their concerns and emotions.
Family stressors are not left behind the
closed doors of a family’s home. Most
children spend about seven hours a day
in school. Children talk to their peers, talk
to their teachers, write about their home
life and often share family stories with
their entire class. No doubt, teachers know
a lot about your families.
However, the perspective of a school-age
child may not always be what is actually
happening in the home. If a parent is be-
ing deployed, it is vital that the teacher be
aware. When the child begins sharing their
concerns or if a child “shuts down,” the
teacher will have a better understanding
of the child’s emotional state if he or she
knows that a parent is deployed.
As a school liaison officer, this is my
number one request from schools: Please
let us know when a student’s parent is be-
ing deployed. Unfortunately, this is not
information I can share with schools, but
parents can.

children help with preparing for and deal-
ing with all stages of deployment, from

ployment kit that also contains a stuffed
bear called Cuzzie, postcards, a journal

ton Setty of U.S. Naval Mobile Construc-
tion Battalion (NMCB) 40 has been named
the Naval Expeditionary Combat Com-
mand (NECC) Sailor of the Year.
Setty competed against three other
NECC Sailors for the title, which was an-
nounced March 18 at Little Creek, Va.
Setty first competed at NMCB 40’s bat-
talion level and the 31st Seabee Readiness
Group’s (SRG) Sailor of the Year compe-
titions before he was recognized as the 1st
Naval Construction Division (1NCD)
Sailor of the Year before the NECC com-
petition.

listed adviser, attributes Setty’s winning
at these various levels to NMCB 40’s Sail-

“It’s a term most Sailors have heard, but

“He has been performing at the level of
a chief and at times filling the profes-
sional role at that level since I checked on

“Both civilian and Seabee mechanics are
taking great pride in their work and are
treating it as if they themselves will be
using it in such dangerous areas.”
NMCB 3 is also expected to deploy to
Afghanistan next year, and the Seabees
understand that the same armor they are
installing now will be protecting them
when it is their turn to deploy and con-
tinue the mission.
“Working with CED to armor mission-
critical CESE has helped us return our
focus to CENTCOM and training for the
missions we will face in only nine short

the movements for the battalion during
the recent NMCB 40 Pacific theater de-

“I moved the battalion from Port Hue-

Setty gives the credit of his winning
streak to his supervisors and subordinates,
and it isn’t only Setty’s supervisors who
think he is deserving of his Sailor of the
Year accolades
“CM1 is what you think of when you
hear Sailor of the Year,” said Builder 3rd
Class Dan Jones, NMCB 40 Convoy Se-
curity Element. “He is a fair and consistent
leader with me and my peers. He sets the
example constantly, he’s always early to
work, motivating, and you know he’s not
going to ask anything of you that he hasn’t
done or isn’t willing to do.”
Martinez said Setty will tell you himself
that it’s because of the Seabees he leads
that he won NECC Sailor of the Year. The
hardest thing to get Setty to do is to talk
about himself, which basically shows just
how humble he is about winning.
“He’s going places and is going to be an
outstanding leader for the Navy, whether
or not he goes any further in the Sailor of
the Year competitions that are ahead of
him,” said Martinez.
Setty moves on to Fleet Forces competi-
tion, where the winner will be named one
of the Navy’s overall Sea Sailors of the
Year and automatically be promoted to
chief petty officer, just one of the many
honors that come with that recognition.

Retirees may want to take advantage of
a free program being offered at the Veter-
ans Home of California in Ventura.
On Saturday, May 1, from 9 a.m. to 1
p.m., the Veterans Home will be teaming
with driving experts, occupational thera-
pists and trained technicians to hold a
“CarFit” event — a unique education pro-
gram designed to help drivers 55 and over
understand how to improve driving safe-
ty by ensuring their cars are properly ad-
justed just for them.
A special team will lead drivers through
a free 12-point CarFit checklist to ensure
they understand how to use vehicle fea-
tures properly.
CarFit is not a mechanical inspection
of the car or a test of the driver’s ability.
Instead, during each 20-minute CarFit
session, trained technicians recommend
personal vehicle adjustments and adapta-
tions and offer resources that could en-
hance senior driving safety.
Occupational therapists will also be on
hand to provide information on adaptive
devices, such as pedal extenders and seat
cushions.
“The program’s purpose is to ensure
drivers are correctly using vehicle devices,
such as mirrors and seat belts, and are
properly placed within their car, all with
an eye toward safety,” said Marisue East-
lake, Director of the Oxnard RSVP, which
in Ventura County, is the driving force
behind bringing the program to the west

RSVP is a volunteer program that helps
people age 55 and older find meaningful
opportunities to serve within their com-

The CarFit event will take place at the

The check-up is free, but appointments,

Sixty-nine runners and walkers — some with
strollers, some with dogs — took advantage of
a gorgeous day on April 15 and traveled a coast-
line route for the traditional Earth Day 5K at
Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu.
Lt. Cmdr. Matt Thomas, who recently returned
from a deployment with VAW-117, took first
place with a time of 15 minutes, 17 seconds, beat-

“This is a great way to keep the dogs in shape,”
Leeds said. “It teaches people that the dogs aren’t
just here for enforcement, that they can help in
the community as well.”

featured booths and exercise areas that
kept youngsters entertained for hours.
Festivities began at 10 a.m., and from
then until the fair closed at 2 p.m. and the
Mugu Theater began screening the movie
“Tooth Fairy,” every booth — from a pot-
ted-plant table to a cookie-decorating
table to face-painting — had solid busi-
ness.
The award-winning dance groups from
Channel Islands High School drew a big
crowd at 11 a.m.
“This is an untapped talent here in Ven-
tura County,” Monica James, school liai-
son officer, said as the all-male hip-hop
team wrapped up their act and the all-girl
hip-hop team took their place. “People in
Orange County know more about these
dance teams than people in Ventura Coun-
ty. They’ve won so many regional and
national awards, but nobody here knows
about them.”
The booths stayed busy even as the
dancers performed, with some youngsters
refusing to tear themselves away from the
giant chess set, the New West Symphony
booth where children could try different
musical instruments and the ever-popular
bubble sink and jolly jump.
Pete Godkin, the government represen-
tative for Home Depot, smiled as he
watched children make their own potted
plants. He had also brought this booth on
base for Winter Wonderland.
“I’ve told the Navy that anytime they
want us here, all they have to do is let us
know,” he said. “It always goes really
well.”
Rachel Wilcox brought her two young-
sters to Kids’ Day, Logan, 3, and Olivia,
5 months.
“We came to have fun while Daddy’s
deployed,” she said.

“When I go into a match I pay attention
to my opponent,” Diaz noted. “I see what
he has and how he acts. If they come out
with power and speed, I match and coun-
ter.”
While the Army team took home the
gold medal with an overall score of 15
points, the Marines took the silver with
seven points, the Navy earned five points,
and the Air Force received zero points.
The championships were coordinated
by NBVC’s Morale, Welfare and Recre-
ation Department. Athletics Director
Kent Blankenship led a dedicated plan-
ning team, whose efforts paid off with an
impressive turnout Friday night of more
than 900 spectators.
Diaz and the other gold medalists will
move on to Camp Lejeune, N.C., to com-
pete in the CISM 53rd World Military
Boxing Championship, scheduled for Oct.
8-17. They will all participate in a special
training camp Sept. 23 through Oct. 7 at
Camp Lejeune to prepare for CISM.
The U.S. team will face 22 other coun-
tries that are expected to send their boxers
to the competition.

It takes something special to keep the
attention of a room full of third-, fourth-
and fifth-graders, and the U.S. Navy Box-
ing Team had it.
When BNSN Justin Diaz said he lived
on a destroyer and had visited nine coun-
tries around the world, there was more
than one “Wow!” from the students at El
Descanso School in Camarillo.

HM2 Anthony Cruz Padilla explained
how, as a hospital corpsman, he was once
stationed on a hospital ship.
“We provide assistance to people who
don’t have the means to get the help they
need,” he said. “We help people around
the world.”
But the oohs and aahs ended when Diaz
answered the question about why he got
into boxing.
“I used to get bullied,” he answered, and
all eyes met his. “I was 9 years old and
living in Puerto Rico, and my dad told me
to start boxing. He saw how much I en-
joyed it, and he told me that if I got into
fights and got into trouble, he’d take it all
away. I got good grades just so I could
keep boxing.”

child who needed to rein in his anger, a
child who was a troublemaker -- they all

16 they told their stories to children who
listened.
“Boxing is a good way to transfer your
anger,” Diaz told the youngsters. “Any bad
emotion, you just let your frustrations out
with a punching bag. That way you don’t
bring it home or to school with you.”
HN Brandon Wicker called boxing a
discipline.
“You don’t want to go out and hurt
people,” he explained.
“It’s a sport, not a fight,” added Kent
Blankenship, the athletic director for Mo-
rale, Welfare and Recreation and the El

With that, he passed around the boxing
gear, then invited some of the students on
stage to try sparring. Also putting on
gloves was Dr. Beverly Eidmann, principal
of El Descanso.
“I think the kids learned some really
good lessons today,” she said after the box-
ers left. “I think some of the kids could
really relate to some of their stories.”

The VR-55 Minutemen recently received
the 2009 Battle “E”, CNO Aviation Safe-
ty “S” and the Commander, Fleet Logis-
tics Operational Excellence Award, mark-
ing another outstanding year for the

55’s professionalism and noteworthy

For the sixth consecutive year, VR-55
has provided more operational support
than any other Commander, Fleet Logis-
tics Support Wing (CFLSW) C-130

over 4,400 mishap-free flight-hours.

commanders worldwide, the Minutemen
exceeded the previous two years’ opera-
tional achievements by transporting over
4,184,426 pounds of cargo and 8,169 pas-

During 2009, VR-55 completed 10
months of operational overseas detach-
ments in the PACOM, EUCOM, and
CENTCOM theaters. VR-55 also reached
a major milestone of 33 years and 140,210
hours of Class “A” mishap-free flight op-
erations.

stress among Sailors is rising, Greenert

He called it a “disturbance in the force,”
and in the military, it is evidenced by

ber of suicides and sexual assaults.
Suicide rates have been creeping up in
the Navy, Greenert said, but numbers have
not spiked this year.
“I like to think you’re looking out for
