LONDONS BRIDGE
Warm welcome for new mayor, after an
election dogged by Labour anti-Semitism
SADIQ KHAN finally gave Jewish Labour Party supporters
cause to cheer this week after he was overwhelmingly
elected as Londons new mayor and made the communitys
Yom HaShoah commemoration his first public event, writes
Justin Cohen.
Khan made a pledge to be mayor for all Londoners a centrepiece of his campaign and was a leading voice in condemning
anti-Semitism in his party in the weeks leading up to polling day.
Despite questions over his past dealings with extremists and
revelations he had lobbied for sanctions against Israel seven
years ago, he was greeted with applause from the 3,000-strong
audience at Allianz Park on Sunday. It came a day after his signing-in ceremony was attended by faith leaders, including Rabbi
Mark Goldsmith.
The new mayor told Jewish News: Im not surprised but hope
others noticed the warmth and generosity with which I was received. I think people recognise Ive worked extremely hard to

engage, to listen. For me thats what London is all about. We

dont tolerate we respect, we embrace.
Asking how he would use his office to tackle prejudice in the
city, he told Jewish News: Weve got to accept there are some
people who are Muslim and some people of the Jewish faith who
dont like the fact Im here at a Jewish community event sitting
next to the Chief Rabbi.
He added: My message to those people is we live in the
greatest city in the world and weve got to get along. Im the
mayor of London, the most diverse city in the world and Ill be
everyones mayor. There can be no preferential treatment. I have
a role to build bridges. My signing in ceremony was deliberately
designed to show the sort of a mayor Ill be and I started as I
mean to go on.
He has previously worked with organisations including the
Coexistence Trust and Alif Aleph UK that are specifically involved in enhancing Jewish-Muslim relations.

Labour MP hits back at criticism

THE LABOUR MP for Ealing Central and Acton has said she was
massively misrepresented in
reports on her comments that a
Labour government could apologise for the establishment of
Israel.
Rupa Huq, who was quoted
speaking at an all-party general
election hustings last year, was
asked about the possibility of an
apology, given Britains control of
the territory in the run-up to 1948.
In response, the Mail on Sunday reported that Huq said: That
happened under a British government. To my mind, an apology
yes. You could do one. A Labour
Government could probably get
that through.
She then
added: But
it sounds a
bit
Tony
Blair to me
though,
and we all
know what
happened
to him.

The timing could not have

been worse for Huq, who last
month defend suspended
Labour MP Naz Shah after the
latter was revealed to have sent a
series of anti-Semitic messages
on social media.
This week, Huq reacted angrily
to the reports, telling Jewish
News: It was a tough crowd. I restated my belief in a negotiated
peace working within the bounds
of international law towards a
two-state solution repeatedly
over the two hour meeting.
She said it was a massive misrepresentation, adding: I am a
signatory to the We Believe in
Israel charter and have attended
Labour Friends of Israel events in
the past.
Pro-Palestinian Labour politicians have come under intense
scrutiny in recent weeks, with former London mayor Ken Livingstone suspended for saying Hitler
was a Zionist before he went
mad. An internal inquiry has
been set up to look at the issue
and devise a code of conduct.

DISMORE: LIVINGSTONES
EXPLUSION IS A PRIORITY
LABOURS ANDREW Dismore has said
pushing for the expulsion of Ken Livingstone from Labour will be a priority, after
being re-elected as the London Assembly
member for Barnet and Camden.
The former MP (pictured) triumphed by
a large margin of 16,000 over Tory Dan
Thomas, despite concerns the anti-Semitism scandal that has dogged Labour could
cost him significant support among the
Jewish community.
While it was down on his 21,000 majority
in 2012, he admitted the result was far better than anticipated.
He told Jewish
News: I knew it
was going to be
close, but we did
rather better than
I thought.
I am grateful
particularly to all
my Jewish constituents who
kept faith
with me. I
will keep
faith with
them as I

have throughout my political career, and

one of my first objectives is to continue my
campaign to have Ken Livingstone
chucked out of the party for good. I cannot believe he wont be out of the Labour
Party before too long. So many people towards the centre of the leadership have
had enough of him, and so have I and so
have the people of Barnet and Camden.
Turning to the wider issue of anti-Semitism within the party following the suspension of around 20 members, councillors
and an MP, and the creation of an inquiry,
he said: At long last were seeing people
get to grips with this problem.
Were not talking about hundreds of
people, I dont think, but they have to go
and Ken Livingstone should be top of the
list. He added: Jeremy has to do something to reach out to the Jewish community far more than has happened so far.
An administrative error saw hundreds of
voters across Barnet unable to vote last
Thursday morning, including the Chief
Rabbi, Rabbi Mirvis. A small margin of victory either way could have made a legal
challenge inevitable.
Thomas, who had been cautiously optimistic about the result ahead of the

vote, said the party of government often

suffered at local elections and added that
Dismores name recognition from years as
an MP and incumbency as an Assembly
Member prved a major advantage.
Mike Katz, vice-chair of the Jewish
Labour Movement said: Andrew Dismores re-election in Barnet and Camden is
a real testament to the hard work he has
done to champion the interests of
his Jewish constituents.
Meanwhile, former deputy mayor of
London Nicky Gavron, number two on
Labours London-wide list, won another
term on the London Assembly.
Elsewhere, Labour suffered significant
loses in councils with large Jewish communities in the north.
Sedgley Park in Bury and Eastwood, the
largest Jewish seat in Scotland, both
switched to the Conservatives.
MP John Mann, chair of the All-Party
Group Against Anti-Semitism, said: It is
clear the Jewish vote, which for generations in families has been firmly Labour,
has now gone against Labour. This issue
is going to define Jeremy Corbyns leadership of the party. He has to get on top
of it.

Corbyns deputy is ashamed of anti-Semitism

TOM WATSON has said he is ashamed of
cases of anti-Semitism in Labour and pledged
to fight to ensure Zionism is not used as a
term of abuse, as he launched a thinly-veiled
attack on Ken Livingstone.
He also backed the Jewish Labour Movements proposals for tougher rules to make it
easier to expel party members responsible for
anti-Semitism or Islamophobia.
Meanwhile, former prime minister Gordon
Brown has said Labour must stand very
strong against any anti-Semitism in its ranks
and said he was sure party leader Jeremy Corbyn was determined not to tolerate such views.
In a message to JLM members for Yom
HaShoah, Labours deputy leader (pictured,
right) stressed the importance of remembrance and education of the Holocaust .
Part of that commitment to memory and
education is standing steadfast against those
who seek to deny or revise the history of the
Holocaust itself or the events leading up to it,
he wrote. Whatever their purpose. Whatever
their agenda. Whoever they are.
Far from supporting Zionism, the Nazi
leader had described it as a scam in Mein
Kampf, Watson pointed out. He added:

Much of the language of todays anti-Zionism makes exactly the same claims.
Israel, he insisted, was testimony to
Hitlers ultimate failure, as is the vibrancy of
British Jewry and he insisted non-Jews must
stand up against continuing anti-Semitism
today, as those who were involved in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising risked their lives to do.
It survived in Poland, where Jews rescued from concentration camps after the war
were attacked and hundreds were killed,
Watson wrote. It survived in Iran, which held
another disgusting cartoon contest a few
weeks ago, denying and belittling the Holocaust and spreading hate further.
And it survives, most troublingly, here in
the UK in social media and dinner-table
chatter; in our schools and in our universities,
in our politics and in our parties.
Im ashamed of the recent cases of antiSemitism in my party. Im working with the
Jewish Labour Movement and the Jewish
community to ensure that racists and antiSemites have no place in British politics.
Together with many colleagues, I am backing
the JLM proposals for tougher rules.
He vowed to ensure Zionism is not used

as a term of abuse or as a code word for Jews.

I will fight to ensure that the right to Jewish
national self-determination is preserved and
respected. Jews are the target of anti-Semitism, but I will fight to ensure that they are not
left to oppose it alone.
Asked about the issue after a speech at the
London School of Economics, Brown said:
Anybody who is concerned about prejudice,
discrimination and the treatment of different
groups in our society will want to send a very
clear message that anti-Semitism is not only
illegal, but it is wrong and it has got to be
punished. It is very clear to me that
we have got to stand very
strong against anybody who
commits anti-Semitic abuse.
I think Jeremy Corbyn would
say the same, if he was
speaking here today.
MP Naz Shah and
ex-London mayor
Livingstone
are
among individuals
who have been
suspended by
the party.

Luciana Berger: Keep faith in my party

SHADOW CABINET minister Luciana Berger
has called on Jewish members of her party to
keep faith in Labour politics in the wake of the
bitter anti-Semitism row, singling out Ken
Livingstone as an absolute disgrace.
The Liverpool Wavertree MP made her comments amid concern over a series of anti-Semitic incidents, over which around 20
members have been suspended.
Speaking at Tuesdays Jewish Womens
Aids annual lunch to an audience of 250
women at The Montcalm in Great Cumberland Place, Berger said: Some people have
asked me if the Jewish community should
abandon the Labour Party. I think it would be
absolutely perverse if people like me and my Luciana Berger speaking at JWA

Jewish parliamentary colleagues left the

Labour Party. Its the anti-Semites who should
leave the Labour Party.
She also reacted to Livingstones remarks two
weeks ago, claiming Hitler was a Zionist, and
fellow MP Naz Shahs post on Facebook which
sparked the controversy. Berger said the former
mayor of London was an absolute disgrace and
certainly does not speak for my party.
She also spoke about tackling domestic violence against women for the charity, which offers
support and counselling for victims of abuse.
The MP also reflected on her role as a shadow
minister, outlining her aspirations for improving
the exposure of mental health and mental
health services.

I will change our great city A mayor with ideas and ideals
for the better for everyone
RABBI LAURA

JANNER-KLAUSNER
Senior Rabbi, Reform Judaism

Continued from page 1

There are lots of wonderful projects going on, he said. Im such a
big fan of Mitzvah Day. Theres so
much we can do. One of my criticisms
of previous mayors is they didnt understand the power of the role Its not
simply the power given to you by Parliament, its also the pulpit of persuasion and I intend to use the powers I
have to change our city for the better.
At a time when relations between
many British Jews and the partys
leadership are severely strained and
after weeks of negative headlines
around anti-Semitism, Khan won plaudits for the energy of his campaign
within the Jewish community.
He condemned cases of anti-Semitism within his party as a badge of
shame, insisted his party could do
more on the issue [prior to Jeremy
Corbyns announcement of an inquiry
into anti-Semitism in the party] and
was one of the first to call for Ken Livingstones suspension following his remarks on Hitler supporting Zionism.
He also spoke out against the boycott,
divestment and sanctions campaign,
insisting it did not bring peace closer.
Jeremy Newmark, chair of the Jewish Labour Movement, said: Sadiqs
campaign set a gold standard in how
relations between a high-profile politician and the Jewish community should

t. 1
Es

Sadiq Khan sits next to Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis at the Yom Hashoah UK event

work. Sadiq won the hearts and minds

of many Jewish Londoners, remaining
true to his core anti-racist principles,
being open about where he had
changed his perspective and prioritising the need to be a mayor for all Londoners. He set a template from which
others in the Labour Party and across
British politics can learn a great deal.
He said he had received abuse
online, but pledged to continue to
stand up against what I think is wrong,
stand up to inequality, injustice.
Khan said it was a privilege to
meet survivors and their families before
taking his seat for the moving two-hour

event, organised by Yom HaShoah UK

and backed by 120 communal organisations. He had been worried as a
communities minister about what the
dwindling number of survivors would
mean for passing on the memory of the
Nazi horrors. But he said: Whats great
is that children were on stage, involved
in lighting candles. Its important not
just for people of the Jewish faith.
Board of Deputies president
Jonathan Arkush said: We very much
welcome the fact that [Khans] first public engagement was the Yom HaShoah
commemoration. We look forward to
working with him in his new role.

IT WAS a Twitter abuse magnet for

anti-Semites and Islamophobes alike. We
were asked to pose for a photograph, the
senior rabbi and the new Muslim mayor. It
set a positive example, but we still must
look at what lies beneath the surface of
many communities in Britain.
The recent jolt regarding anti-Semitism
within politics has alarmed us all, and the
perpetrators have righty been condemned.
However, we need to cast our gaze wider.
We need to consider how all of us in Britain
view those from other communities about
whom we know very little, but assume a lot.
Last week I went to Bradford to learn more
about Muslim communities in Britain, what
their views are of Jews, and how we might
all improve our opinion of the other those
we dont see as the same as us.
My first meeting was with a group
of 15 Muslim women. It looked like the usual
tea and samosas dialogue that we often
engage in its soft, its friendly, its basically
good. But it doesnt move us on or help us
really tackle the prejudices within us.
I changed things by inviting these
women to ask me any questions they liked.
Bradford Muslims views of Jewish people
have been formed through the prism of
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a perspective likely to leave a bitter aftertaste.
There were questions about Jewish
power and wealth, and about Israel.
One of the women, Sobia, who asked

Sadiq Khan with Laura Janner-Klausner

questions most vociferously, invited me for

dinner at her family home. Through difficult
conversations, robust relationships are
made. I believe that what happened during
my stay in Bradford was a small shift both for
me and for those Muslims with whom I met.
I will return to Bradford and continue
working with Sobia, her family, the Bradford Jewish community, local Christians,
and all those who want to build better understanding between people in Britain.
We need to talk about difficult subjects
that divide us, such as Israel and religious
extremism. I am partnering with other Jews
and Muslims to start a practical initiative in
Bradford that can be spread throughout the
country. I invite others to join me in this.
I believe Sadiq Khan is a man with ideas
and ideals. We should immediately see
beyond his ethnicity. To see him as the first
Muslim mayor is to continue to see me as a
female religious leader. When we see each
other as the mayor who happens to be Muslim and the senior rabbi who happens to be
female, well have taken a step towards the
bigger goal building a Britain where we
see ourselves first as human beings and we
then discuss the issues that divide us.

SPECIAL REPORT: YOM HASHOAH COMMEMORATION

THE SHADOWS WILL

NEVER LEAVE US
he raucous noise of a rugby match was
replaced with eerie silence on Sunday,
as more than 3,000 people honoured the
victims of the Holocaust at the communitys main
Yom HaShoah commemoration at Allianz Park.
The silent tribute to the six million murdered
Jews was part of a moving two-hour ceremony
that included video testimony from camp survivors, refugees and former British soldiers who
helped to overcome the Nazis more than 150
of whom joined the event.
In a sign of the cross-communal nature of the
event, leaders of synagogue movements across
the religious spectrum lit six memorial candles
together with survivors and members of the
third generation, as dignitaries including new
London mayor Sadiq Khan looked on.
Survivor Ben Helfgott, part of the organising
committee from Yom HaShoah UK, told the
gathering that the lessons of the Shoah and
events leading up to it remained as
relevant as ever. And while the number of those who directly experienced
the horrors grow fewer, he told the
gathering: All the survivors are proud
youve come here. We are passing on
the baton to you with confidence.
Young people, he insisted were not
responsible for the past but are for
sowing the seeds for what might happen in the future.
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis hailed
the survivors heroes who emerged
after the war to tell their stories in an
effort to ensure their memory lives on.
They are a remarkable resource and
inspiration to us all, he said. But
they wont be here forever, so we
need a new generation of heroes.
We are blessed in Britain to have
so many outstanding organisations
spreading Holocaust education. We
owe it to the remarkable survivors and
the children who perished the shadows which will never leave us.
The event returned to Barnet Copthall Stadium a year after it hosted the countrys largest
ever event marking Yom HaShoah, the memorial
day for the Jewish community, with 5,000
in attendance. Yom HaShoah UK once again
brought together 120 organisations from across
the religious and political spectrum to support the
Remember Together We Are One campaign.
The event, compered by former Board of
Deputies president Henry Grunwald, was peppered with poignant musical interludes from The
Male Voice Choirs and a choir of children from
five Jewish primary schools.
The sombre gathering was reminded that the
victims would fill 20,000 Allianz stadiums by
March of the Living participant Deborah Tamir,
before representatives of youth groups recited
a joint pledge to gather to mark Yom HaShoah
in future years.

Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev, who is the

son of a survivor, said: Preserving the memory
of the Holocaust is more important than ever
before to remind us where humanitys oldest
hatred can lead.
Israel is assaulted with the same slurs and libels that have been leveled at the Jews since
time immemorial. The anti-Semitic Hamas charter
reads like The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,
accusing Jews of orchestrating both world wars.
Were no longer a powerless people. Today, we
protect ourselves and defend our freedom. When
we say never again we mean never again.
Yom HaShoah UK chairman Neil Martin said
he hoped the event would return to the same
venue on 23 April next year. Sunday was a
meaningful and historic day for our community
and our society at a much-needed moment, he
told Jewish News. We were honoured that

the new mayor of London attended as his first

public engagement and show as Londoners we
stand together as one. But, most importantly,
we had the privilege of more than 200 survivors,
refugees and veterans joining us, providing an
opportunity to thank them publically for all they
have done for our community and country.

Television personality Robert Rinder, a member of the third generation, said: The essence
of Jewish family life is to remember and teach
our children that the best answer to those who
seek to deny is not to pass them a history book
but to say: I was there; my father was there; my
grandparents were there.

Jewish candidate to replace Ken on NEC

A FORMER PRESIDENT of
Oxford Universitys Jewish Society is to replace Ken Livingstone
as a contender for the Labour
Partys governing body.
Rhea Wolfson, 25 who previously worked as outreach director for the New Israel Fund, is
co-chair of Scottish Labour
Young Socialists and womens
officer at Scottish Young Labour.
Currently branch secretary
for the GMB union, she will be
among six candidates for the
centre-left slate backed by the
pro-Corbyn grassroots organisation Momentum.
She has been subject to
anti-Semitism on Twitter and
tweeted that she was
shocked at the abuse being
tweeted at not only me but my
family using literal Nazi prop-

aganda.
A further six candidates, including We Believe in Israel director Luke Akehurst, will make
up a centrist slate.
Labours membership of
nearly 400,000 will elect six
members in total to the national executive committee in
Julys election.
Wolfson told Jewish News:
Im really exited to be able
to make a contribution to the
slate and hopefully to the
NEC. Its going to be a challenging campaign across the
country, but Im throwing myself in to it.
Im confident I have a shot
as much as anyone else. Ive
been involved in youth politics
across the country and I think
having more young voices is

very important. I think having a
Scottish voice is also important
following the recent elections.
Livingstone is ineligible to
stand following his suspension

for suggesting Hitler supporting

Zionism. Wolfson campaigned
for Jeremy Corbyn at the last
election, saying he best
reflected her values.

Corbyns honoured citizen starts jail term

Prison: Sheikh Raed Salah

AN ARAB Israeli preacher hailed by Jeremy

Corbyn as an honoured citizen has been jailed
for racist incitement he made in 2007.
Sheikh Raed Salah, 57, the vehemently anti-Israel head of Northern Branch of Islamic Movement, began serving an eight-month sentence on
Sunday, after being acquitted of the charge in
2013. The decision was then reversed a year later.
We have never allowed ourselves to knead
[the dough for] the bread that breaks the fast
in the holy month of Ramadan with childrens
blood, the former poet is alleged to have said in
East Jerusalem nine years ago.

Whoever wants a more thorough explanation,

let him ask what used to happen to some children
in Europe, whose blood was mixed in with the
dough of the holy bread.
After the speech, up to 1,000 Palestinians
began rioting, throwing stones at security forces.
His comments were investigated and a year later
he was charged by Jerusalem Magistrates Court,
which convicted him of incitement to violence,
but acquitted him of racist incitement.
A year later, Jerusalem District Court overturned that decision, and found him guilty of
racist incitement, too.

Ewan: I feel mostly Jewish

EWAN MCGREGOR admits he
follows more Jewish beliefs
than the Christian traditions
with which he was brought up.
In an interview with The Daily
Beast, the 45-year-old Scottish
actor (pictured), who will soon
star as Jesus in the forthcoming
Last Days In The Desert, revealed he is more involved with
the traditions of his French-Jewish wife, Eve Mavrakis.
McGregor said: Im not a
religious person. Im married to
a Jewish woman, so my children
are Jewish and my involvement
in religion has more to do with
the Jewish faith now and not
the Christian faith, which I was
very vaguely brought up in.
The actor and his wife, a pro-

duction designer, have four

daughters and live in Los Angeles. He was speaking ahead of
his latest dual roles as the son
of God and the devil in Rodrigo
Garcias film.
He has also been directing an
adaptation of Philip Roths
1960s-set novel American Pastoral, in which he plays a Jewish
character, Swede Levov.

Chief Rabbi accused of sensationalism

JEWISH CELEBRITIES have
penned an open letter criticising
the Chief Rabbis sensationalist
allegations of anti-Semitism in
the Labour Party and his equation of anti-Zionism with Jew
hatred.
Comedian Alexei Sayle and actress Miriam Margolyes were
among 88 signatories to a letter
in The Guardian on Tuesday, following Ephraim Mirvis comments written in The Telegraph
last week.
The group claimed that
Mirvis now joins in the sensationalist allegations of antiSemitism in the Labour Party,

where the headlines decibel

level is in inverse proportion to
the evidence supporting them.
They added: Mirvis attacks
as anti-Semitic those who separate Judaism from Zionism.
Yet most Jews who perished in
the Holocaust were indifferent
to Zionism and many opposed
it Is he recasting those victims of the Holocaust posthumously as enemies of Judaism
and therefore as anti-Semites?
Mirvis had written: One can
no more separate [Zionism]
from Judaism than separate the
city of London from Great
Britain.

Community in shock after rabbi dies, aged 43

TRIBUTES HAVE been made
to an Ilford Chabad rabbi described as a real go-getter
who died on Sunday aged
43 leaving a wife and eight
children.
Rabbi Moshe Muller influenced people far beyond his
[Gants Hill] community, said
friends and colleagues, who
were this week coming to
terms with his sudden death.
Muller died of a heart
attack while in hospital, where
he had gone after feeling
unwell several days earlier.
He had no known heart or
health conditions, according
to Chabad Lubavitch chief
executive Rabbi Bentzi Sudak.
Everyones in absolute
shock, he said. He had an
amazing effect. He always
had a smile on his face. A lot

Charedim and others representing a complete cross section of the Jewish community.

His reach wasnt just in his

On the youth side he led day

Lincoln Uni splits with NUS

STUDENTS AT Lincoln University
have voted to disaffiliate from the
National Union of Students,
becoming the first to leave after
NUS delegates elected an antiIsrael president last month.
The university, which does not
have many Jewish students, voted
to withdraw its membership,
which costs Lincolns Students
Union (ULSU) over 50,000 per
annum in fees and related costs.
ULSU president Hayley Jayne
Wilkinson said: For some time,
we have felt the focus of debate
within the NUS has been far
removed from the issues our
students tell us are important to
them.
Of the 1,734 Lincoln students
voting on the motion (12 percent
of the student population), 881
opted to disaffiliate from the
NUS, with 804 voting to stay.
It comes after Jewish societies
across the country voiced con-

NUS president Malia Bouattia

cern about newly-elected NUS

president Malia Bouattia, who
denied claims of anti-Semitism
after she spoke of the Zionistled media and referred to the
University of Birmingham as a
Zionist outpost.
This weekend in The Sunday
Times, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis
warned that Jewish students attending university were facing a
wall of anti-Zionism, which they
feel and know to be Jew hatred.

EasyJet removes passengers from plane Man arrested over dogs Nazi salute Weidenfeld Fund: Well pay for refugees
EASYJET THIS week put the
blame on Spanish police for
the removal of more than
100 Jewish passengers from
a Paris-bound flight leaving
Barcelona, after reports of disruptive behaviour led to one arrest and a six-hour delay, writes
James Marlow.
EasyJet chiefs explained that
all 180 passengers on board flight
EZY3920 on 1 May continued as

were ordered off the aircraft.

EasyJet PR manager Andy
Cockburn said passengers were
returned to the gate in Barcelona
and were met by police due to a
group of passengers behaving in
a disruptive manner.
He added: While such incidents are rare we take them very
seriously and do not tolerate
abusive or threatening behaviour
on board.

Dogs Nazi salute

A MAN HAS been arrested over an online video

that reportedly shows a dog making a Nazi salute.
The 28-year-old, from Coatbridge in north Lanarkshire, faces hate crime charges over the video,
Police Scotland said. The clip allegedly shows a
pug sitting in front of a screen showing footage of
Adolf Hitler and making Nazi salutes.
Officers said the video had been shared online
and caused offence and hurt to many people in
our community. A Police Scotland spokeswoman
said the man was arrested in relation to the alleged publication of offensive material online.

A FUND SET up by the late Lord

Weidenfeld has offered to help
pay to resettle 3,000 unaccompanied Christian refugee children
from Syria.
In a letter to the prime minister, Fund president Lord Wolf offers a financial contribution to
children from Christian minorities
because Weidenfeld had himself
been taken in by a British Christian family in 1938.
Viennese-born Weidenfeld, a

publisher and philanthropist who

died in January, set up the Fund
in response to sectarian atrocities
committed by Islamic State, and
in part as a debt of gratitude
to the family, said Wolf.
It is our hope that the Funds
contribution will demonstrate
leadership and spur on others to
make their own contribution, he
said, noting that the Fund was
backed by prominent members of the Jewish community.

Former JFS boy

A DOCUMENTARY producer has
revealed his immense pride
following a Bafta win for his
groundbreaking series, The Murder Detectives.
Neil Grant, the executive producer behind the Channel 4 series, which aired last November,
picked up the award for best factual series at the ceremony on
Sunday night.
Filmed over 18 months, the
crew were given unprecedented
access to detectives investigating the apparently motiveless
killing of Bristol teenager
Nicholas Robinson.
Grant, who is managing director of Films of Record, said he
had been astounded by the
critical reaction to the series,
which also picked up two Bafta
Craft awards for director Dave

He said: Im immensely
proud of the team, but its also
important to remember this is
essentially a story about parents
who have lost a child. To celebrate that would be inappropriate, but if there is one less
murder as a result of knife crime
because of this documentary,
then its a job well done.
The north London-based producer who describes himself as
a JFS boy, having been a former pupil, teacher and school
governor at the secondary
school in Kenton also revealed
a second series is in the pipeline.

Belsen brothers finally

reunited after 65 years
A NEW FILM has revealed the
heart-rending reunion of two
brothers separated at BergenBelsen, with one also meeting
his biological mother for the
first time since he was a
baby.
The two men, who grew
up in Canada and Israel,
were brought together by
researchers
after
seven
decades of silence from their
mother, Aida, who refused to
speak about what happened.
Aida, who lives in Canada,
gave birth to Izak in the camp
just after the war ended. Izak
was adopted by an Israeli family in 1948, when he was three
but, although he was reunited
with Aida when he was 11, she
never told him who his father
was or that he had a brother
in the camp.
That brother, called Shepsyl,
followed his mother to
Canada, changing his name to
Shep on entry. It was only
when Izaks nephew contacted
a heritage company that Shep
was finally tracked down and
reunited with Izak.
The film, called Aidas
Secrets, premiered in Toronto
last week, and revealed the
input of MyHeritage, which
was approached for help in
2013, after Izak received some
revelatory documents from the
Bergen-Belsen archive.

Disability, not dependency.

Michael worried that going
blind at just 40 years old would
signal the loss of his much prized
independence. However, in his
specially designed Jewish Blind
& Disabled apartment he can
continue to live life as he chooses,
and not as his disability might
otherwise dictate.

Shep Shell and Izak Sagi meet after being separated at Bergen-Belsen

I cant tell you what it

means to finally meet my
brother after 65 years, said
Shep, a visually-impaired
Paralympic skier, cyclist, and
marathon runner who represented Canada.
Whats even more amazing
is fulfilling my lifelong dream
of finding my birth mother.
Finding her alive was the icing
on the cake. It closes a circle
for me and gives me peace of
mind that I am not alone.
The two brothers, now
aged almost 70, met in
Canada before meeting Aida,

A third brother is believed
to be living in Toronto.
Genealogists at MyHeritage, who traced Shep
through his daughter Melanie,
tracked the emotional reunion
after their search through
archives at Bergen-Belson in
Germany, Yad Vashem in
Israel, as well as Canadian and
Israeli vital records, and online
family trees.
Lead researcher Laurence
Harris said: Seeing how
meaningful the outcome was
for the brothers and their families is the very best reward.

Gag on conflict report Two women stabbed

ISRAELI PARLIAMENTARIANS cannot discuss a
leaked report critical of Israeli leaders handling
of the Gaza conflict in 2014, a government
lawyer has said.
Eyal Yanon told the Knesset that members
discussion of State Comptroller Yosef Shapiras
report would mean collaboration in the illegality of the leak.
Israeli media sources who saw the 70-page
document say it slams Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu, Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon
and then-IDF chief Benny Gantz for withholding
information from the cabinet about Hamas tunnel construction and capability.
Netanyahu and Yaalon are also said to be criticised for failing to give the security cabinet realtime updates on the threat of war with Hamas,
and for concealing warnings by Shin Bet in early
July 2014 regarding the potential for war.

TWO WOMEN in their 80s, one of whom is a

Holocaust survivor, were stabbed by assailants
as they walked along a promenade in
Jerusalem on Tuesday.
The victims, aged 82 and 86, were approached from behind by two masked men.
They were taken to hospital where doctors say
they are comfortable and in a moderate condition.
The attack occurred at the Peace Forest,
near the Armon Hanatziv promenade in southern Jerusalem.
The attackers were last seen fleeing toward
the adjacent East Jerusalem neighborhood of
Jabel Mukaber.
Magen David Adom medic Shlomi Tedgi
said he found the women in the field near the
promenade lying in the dirt, conscious, with
stab wounds.

SPECIAL REPORT: INSIDE ISRAELS CULTS

HES NOT THE MESSIAH!

ts a bright Monday morning in a smart Israeli industrial park. Workers with ID
badges and electronic fobs rush busily between the high-tech offices. On an upper
floor of B building, alongside a chemicals
firm, Ive discovered Jesus.
Inside Beit Asaph in Netanya, I could be in
a non-orthodox shul. A drum kit and microphones are clustered in one corner; there are
menorahs on display, an ark. A beautiful wall
hanging depicts a lions head. A closer look reveals the message, appliqud in large Hebrew
letters down each side, Jesus the Messiah.
Not your typical shul, then.
In fact, Im in one of around 200 messianic
churches operating throughout Israel, whose
mission is to encourage Israelis to accept
Yeshua (Jesus) into their lives. With me is
Rachel, a young American friend, who, when
she was a student and new immigrant in Haifa
nine years ago, was targeted by several messianic communities.
Shes keen to find out about this growing
church community practically on our doorstep.
Plus, she can perfectly adopt that hippy vagueness that will allow us to wander in and snoop
around.
So we breeze towards a young man beating
a carpet vigorously outside the heavy metal
doors. Is this the church? Rachel asks.
Abba! He calls, looking behind him. You

200 messianic churches are hard at work in Israel seeking to

redeem the country from its Jewishness. Lisa Sanders investigates
I

False idol: Graham Chapman as the alternative Jesus in the Monty Python film Life Of Brian

wait here, he tells us, and disappears inside.

Instead we follow him, and meet his dad, Lev
Guler, the churchs deacon. According to their
website, Lev and his wife, Ora, emigrated to Israel from Russia in 1994. They have five children. Their congregation of 200 committed
believers and seekers is predominantly Jewish and is made up of Russian, English, Hebrew
and Amharit speakers. Services take place every
Saturday and on Jewish and Christian festivals. Bar- and bat-mitzvahs are celebrated
here, with traditional Jewish elements combined with teachings from the Brit
Hachadasha the New Testament.
There are estimated to be around 10,00020,000 Messianic Jews in Israel, which makes
them a tiny, but growing, minority. Messianic
Jews believe Jesus is the Jewish messiah and
that the Bible prophesies that Gods plan is for
him to return to Jerusalem, win an apocalyptic
showdown against the Antichrist, and rule the
world from the Temple Mount.
According to Ellen Horowitz, content and research director for the lobby group Jewish Israel, Israelis are currently facing a missionary
onslaught by evangelical missionaries targeting Jews for conversion.
Horowitz believes that by actively embracing
Christian evangelical friends, who provide
ideological and financial support for the state
as well as a welcome boost to the tourist industry, Israel has ended up in an unholy alliance
with fundamentalist evangelical organisations.
She says much more needs to be done to educate Israelis about what she calls the old-new
missionary threat.
The Israel branch of the Jehovahs Witnesses
organisation, headquartered near the Carmel
Market in Tel Aviv, has launched a new leaflet
and door-to-door campaign. The Hebrew flyers
ask, cryptically, Whats the Key to Happy Family Life? above a colour rendering of a man and
woman staring sternly into each others eyes
while a child looks on. Is it Love? Money?
Something Else? You have to be pretty sharp
to spot that the Food for Thought overleaf,

atop the same illustrated couple, now smiling

as they listen to an expert (a doctor or a counsellor, youd think) is two Bible quotations one
from Leviticus in the Old Testament, the second
from Colossians 3 in the New.
Ravit Chason, an Israeli woman living in Netanya, was stunned to receive a visit from the
JW. She describes how two people, a man
and a woman, rang the
bell. When I opened
the door, and they saw
Im religious, they
straight away pretended they didnt
speak any Hebrew and
that theyre looking for
Russian families. she
says. But then I saw
them talking to my
neighbour straight afterwards and with her they
spoke excellent Hebrew.. She says she didnt hesitate to write a
message to her socialmedia contacts, warning
them not to answer the
door to the evangelisers.
Back in Beit Asaph,
Deacon Lev assumes

Rachel and I have turned up to participate in

the weekly Good Deeds initiative.
Every Monday, apparently, church members
help to distribute parcels of cooked food, groceries and clothing to the needy in the area, including Holocaust survivors. Sure enough, half
a dozen people come bustling through, carrying bags of food.
A woman who introduces herself as Karma,
from Hadera, comes in laden with Tupperware
containers and asks us where the kitchen is.
Uh, through there, we gesture vaguely, pointing her towards the back. She thanks us profusely and rushes off.
Among these cheerful people, clearly giving
freely of their time to help others, its hard to
imagine theres a sinister motive. But critics say
Beit Asaph, and other messianic churches like
it, are deliberately flouting the law with their activities. For example, according to existing Israeli law, nobody can discuss religion with a
minor (under 18 years of age) without their parents permission.
The Beit Asaph site states proudly that 45
percent of the congregation is under 18 years
of age. We provide a comprehensive spiritual
education system for our children and youth.
A glance at the Beit Asaph notice board
shows an upcoming Youth Trip and a Pesach
Holiday Camp.
Currently, a proposed new law aiming to
tackle cults has passed its first reading in the
Knesset, but its unclear how this would affect
the messianic Christian movement.
In 1998 there was a move to draft anti-missionary legislation but, faced with strong objections from the American right and also from the
Jewish Anti-Defamation League,
the bill was scrapped.
I make my way out of Beit
Asaph, clutching a copy of the
Messianic Times and a flyer for
a performance of Handels Messiah. Leaving the lift is another
volunteer, bringing in plastic
bags bulging with shopping.
Back on street level, Im
back in the centre of high-tech
Israel and wondering how
many of the workers know or
care that Jesus is upstairs.

A powerful message of unity

IN THE seminal 1994 film
Shawshank Redemption, about
the bond between two
American prisoners, Red says his
friend Andy Dufresne crawled
through a river of s*** and came
out clean on the other side.
That unpalatable phrase
came to mind on Sunday, with
the sight of newly-elected
mayor of London Sadiq Khan
at Holocaust Memorial Day
within hours of winning a
campaign that contained far
more muck than Dufresne ever
encountered.
Standing with the Chief Rabbi,
the Israeli ambassador and thousands of British Jews, it sent a
powerful message of unity
days after Ken Livingstones
Hitler was a Zionist comment
did the opposite.
If Khans time at City Hall
proceeds in the way his first
days have suggested, his presence will be a healing one for
interfaith relations and, perhaps
also, relations between his

party and Anglo-Jewry.

While many will still harbour
reservations some of them
understandable the early
signs suggest Khan will be an
excellent city leader and one
who understands not only
communal concerns but our
reasons for them.
His opponents had been right
to ask questions about his links
to extremists, but the way it was
done sometimes left a very
bitter taste. Khan now has the
opportunity to show just how
unfair some of those comments
were through his actions.
We now look forward to the
sight of a Muslim mayor celebrating Chanukah in the Square
later this year.
As Khan himself said at the
Jewish News hustings: Think
of the message this will send.
So mazeltov to Sadiq and to
those who campaigned for a
better, more tolerant capital
city one that celebrates
diversity.

KENS VIEW HAS LONG

BEEN LABOUR ATTITUDE
Israel is the one and only Jewish nation
in the world, where those wish to live in
a Jewish land should be free to so, in the
same way as Muslims are free to live in a
Muslim land if they wish.
I have had many professional experiences in the past with detractors of the
Jewish state, Ken Livingstone for one, and
can assure you his and Jeremy Corbyns
long-held attitude has existed within their
branch of the Labour Party for many years.

YOM HASHOAH EVENT

WAS VERY IMPRESSIVE
Having attended many communal events,
I was extremely impressed with Sundays
Yom HaShoah commemoration.
It was well-organised, well-paced and
had the right balance of emotion and
content. In addition, the choice of location
ensured it was well-attended.
Congratulations go to the organising
committee and Henry Grunwald. On a
spectacularly warm day, it all went to plan.

before the Shoah?

Regarding the utter nonsense that Hitler
was a Zionist, even a GCSE pupil wouldnt
be taken in. Zionism was a mainly Eastern
European Jewish movement to restore
Jewish nationhood.
Few German Jews were Zionists because
they were more German than the
Germans. Hitler followed German racial
science that said mixing pure Aryan blood
with mongrel Semitic blood must be
stopped because the Aryans were the
master race meant to rule the world.
Hitler wanted a judenrein [cleansed
of Jews] Deutschland and the Zionists
wanted more Jews to build the Jewish
state, which was irrelevant to Hitler.
By saying Hitler was a Zionist, one implies
that Zionists were friends of the Nazis.

THANKS FOR THE VOTE

AND IN THIS CLIMATE
I would like to thank the voters of Barnet

AS KEN SHOULD KNOW,

HITLER WAS NO ZIONIST
I would not expect Ken Livingstone to
know details about the population of that
region of the Turkish Ottoman Empire, but
I would expect him to note the tragic irony
of his proposal that those Jews who
survived the Holocaust should have been
split between the UK and the USA.
The tragic irony is that had the British
empire (Canada, Australia, South Africa et
al) and the USA accepted Jewish refugees
before the Holocaust, millions may not
have died. The USA even sent back to
Europe a ship of Jewish refugees that
reached the coast of Florida, knowing they
would likely be killed.
The British Mandatory government in
Palestine closed the gates to Jewish
refugees when their lives were clearly in
danger. How can Ken suggest the UK and
USA would have taken in the few survivors,
when they could have done so much more

Anyone else think that theres

a problem with me casting

such an overwhelming majority.

I especially thank those Jewish
constituents who supported me, despite the
issue of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.
Without your backing, I would never have
been able to win. I promise I will do all I can
to continue to support your causes, including the fight to root out anti-Semitism from
our party and UK politics as a whole and I
will especially continue to campaign for the
expulsion of Ken Livingstone.
A few words about the dreadful maladministration of the election in Barnet. This
is where the Conservatives policies of
never-ending cuts, privatisations and
complete lack of scrutiny and oversight
leads. There must be a swift and public
investigation to allow all those who lost
their vote be heard, and urgent remedial
steps taken before the EU referendum next
month. Heads must roll, as Barnet has
become a national laughing stock.
I look forward to working for the next
four years with our Labour mayor of
London, Sadiq Khan, implementing his
programme to address the desperate need
for affordable housing, freezing transport
fares, restoring neighbourhood policing,
and healing division in our society.

YACHAD ET AL WOULD
JUST HAND OVER ISRAEL
Thank you, Chaim Scott (Jewish News, 5
May), for drawing attention to the New
Israel Fund and Yachad.
I have been trying in vain to warn the
Jewish public about their motives, but it
seems to fall on deaf ears.
People say: But they are Jewish, how can
they be against Israel? As Mr Scott rightly
states, they give the impression they are for
Israel, but in fact would be prepared to see
it taken over by the Palestinians.
They are financed by some donors
sympathetic to the Palestinian cause and
have been allowed to spread their rhetoric
unabated here and in the US.
I was recently at a meeting where
Yachads Hannah Weisfeld spoke. At the
end of a boring talk, I was none the wiser
and neither was the audience. All she did
was quote statistics. I wanted to ask about
Yachads donors but couldnt get a word in
edgeways.

Could the oldest hatred

contaminate our culture?
IT IS the small insidious things that you start to
notice. Sipping coffee in the green room at a TV
studio the comedian, who is to appear before me,
cracks what he thinks is a funny joke: Philip
Green, fancy yachts and Ken Livingstone, it all
makes sense doesnt it. The friendly letters
I have received from Daily Mail readers praising
our passionate coverage of BHS and then reminding me, as if I didnt know, in bold underlined letters he is a JEW after all. And the Tory MP
Richard Fuller calling for Parliamentary justice for
the BHS pensioners after infelicitously talking
about the owners taking their 20 pieces of silver.
Regarding Sadiq Khans campaign for mayor of
London: it is an enormous achievement for the
son of a bus driver from Tooting and human rights
lawyer to be elected as mayor of the worlds financial and global city. His opponent Zac Goldsmith, my MP in Richmond Park and proud of his
Jewish heritage, is accused of dog-whistle politics for daring to question the affiliations of some
of the radical preachers and Hamas supporters
with whom Khan has shared platforms.
We know from Ken Livingstones revealed views
that the radical Islamic company he has kept was
no accident. We also know from the way in which
the anti-Zionism of the left has flourished in the
Labour Party of Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell, when it was largely sidelined and controlled
under the previous leadership, that something

dramatically changed. Even after weeks of revelations of hostility to Jews and Israel in the national
media, it is not considered safe in Britain to voice
concerns. One narrative heard from politicians of
the left is that anti-Semitism has been whipped
up by the right-wing press as a means of harming
Khan and others, so it can be safely ignored.
When my colleague Isabel Oakeshott questioned
the Labour leaders sympathy for Hamas and
Hezbollah on the BBC1s Question Time, the booing rang out across the hall in Manchester.
For a long time both as journalist and (in the
last triennial) as an elected officer of the Board of
Deputies of British Jews, I bought into the idea
that anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism could be
exaggerated and that we were uniquely lucky in
Britain that we are such a tolerant society.
We applaud the election of the first Muslim
mayor of a major European city. We are accepting
of the idea that Britains biggest Islamic charity,
Islamic Relief, is taking advertising space on buses
with the strapline Subhan Allah glory be to God
in Arabic as part of a Ramadan campaign to raise
money for use in war-torn countries such as Syria
and Iraq. Would Britains secular society be happy
if the Church of England spent its money on big bus
posters proclaiming the name of Jesus during Lent?
The return of anti-Semitism to Europe is explored in detail in an article by Brendan Simms
and Charlie Laderman in the New Statesman

under the heading: The longest hatred: AntiSemitism is resurgent in Europe. Can this ancient
poison ever be eradicated? Anyone who has
closely monitored the rise of nasty far-right and
left parties in Europe, amid the spread of economic desperation, could not but be fearful of
what is happening. At home, anti-Zionist and antiJewish sentiments have become mainstream. We
know from the Brussels attacks how ISIS gained a
hold in Belgium. What we also need to understand is that the Brussels Jewish community has
long felt under siege from anti-Zionist elements.
The good news, such as it is, in Europe is that
anti-Semitism tends to be where you would
expect among radical Islamists and in fringe parties such as Jobbick in Hungary, Greeces Golden
Dawn and deep within the National Front in
France. The mainstream parties and politicians,
such as French President Franois Hollande, have
no truck with such sentiments.
The disturbing thing in Britain is that antiSemitism is polluting Labour, the nations main
opposition party. That makes it so much harder
for mainstream parties to build a common front
against extremism. One wants to believe that
Labour is still the party of Harold Wilson, Tony Blair,
Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband: all great sympathisers to things Jewish and to Israel. But it clearly
is not and Britain is in danger of allowing the oldest
hatred to more broadly affect our culture.

Why both May and Gove are

on highly dangerous paths
WE NEED to talk about Theresa May and
Michael Gove. What could there be to talk
about? They are friends of the community.
They speak at our charity dinners. They are
glowing about Israel.
The problem is their views on Europe.
Gove, the Justice Secretary, is campaigning
for Brexit. May reluctantly wants to stay, but
said recently she thinks we should leave the
European Convention on Human Rights instead an option currently not on the table.
They are both proposing fundamentally
dangerous paths. I want to explain why Jewish people should be very worried.
The EU and ECHR exist because of separate international treaties but have a common origin, growing from the ashes of the
Second World War, the Holocaust and what
was known as the European Movement.
The movements big idea was that to prevent another disastrous conflict in Europe
we needed to bring states closer through
political, social and economic cooperation.
Churchill was the driving force, understanding that, to defeat communism and
extreme nationalism, Europe must be rebuilt
on the foundations of common values:
democracy, equality and the rule of law.
From that simple idea sprang the two
most effective international organisations in
history. The ECHR is a treaty drafted mostly
by Conservative British politician David
Maxwell-Fyfe, the UKs prosecutor at the
Nuremberg trials. It contains a list of rights,
such as free speech, freedom of religion and
the right to privacy; a mirror image of the

rights taken away by the Nazis. The ECHR

isnt just fancy words; anyone can apply to
it to enforce his or her rights. In the UK,
it has enforced press freedom, enshrined
protection against child abuse and ensured
equality for gay people, among many other
things.
The EU grew from a different set of
treaties, allowing Europeans to work and
travel where they like, reducing economic
protectionism between countries and introducing important basic standards for workers, such as laws protecting them from
discrimination on grounds of race or religion, guaranteeing maternity leave and
equal pay for workers of equal value.
So far, so idealistic. Of course, both institutions have problems. They are prone to
empire-building and bureaucracy.
The ECHR is overstretched and some feel
makes decisions which should be left to
elected politicians.
It also makes controversial judgments,
for example delaying the deportation of
extremist cleric Abu Qatada until Jordan
changed its laws on evidence obtained by
torture.
Which brings me back to May and Gove.
They pick on those relatively minor criticisms
and amplify them.
They use phrases such as restoring
sovereignty or freeing Britain from the
chains of Europe so it can realise its
potential. Let the lion roar, and so on.
The Jewish community needs to see this
movement for what it is nothing less than

the re-emergence of British nationalism.

And it isnt just happening in Britain.
There is a worldwide trend to focus on
national concerns at the expense of the international community. In the US, Donald
Trumps America First foreign policy is
reminiscent of the policy of the same name
used by Charles Lindbergh to whip up antiJewish prejudice in the 1930s.
The unifying cry of the neo-nationalist
movement is to withdraw from, and possibly
destroy, the institutions that have been central to maintaining peace and increasing
prosperity in Europe for more than half
a century. May and Gove are at the
respectable end of a dangerous coalition
that includes little-Englanders such as UKIP
and the likes of George Galloway.
Nationalism has never been good for
Jews. Jewish communities have thrived in
outward-looking liberal societies, which
celebrate religious freedom and promote
communities with links in other countries.
I am not arguing that if we undermine international organisations, the jackboot will
immediately follow.
But as Pierre-Henri Teitgen, one of the
ECHRs founding fathers, eloquently said:
Democracies do not become Nazi countries
in one day. Evil progresses cunningly It is
necessary to intervene before it is too late.
The Jewish community should listen and
intervene in this negative, narrow anti-European movement before it is too late.

Its Zionism Month time to

proudly say: Im a Zionist!
WHEN WE scheduled Zionism Month for
May, we couldnt have expected it to be
quite so timely.
Ken Livingstones latest appalling slurs
demonstrate how important it is to promote
a proper understanding of Zionism and combat the way it has been turned into a pejorative smear by anti-Israel activists and
anti-Semites.
It is time to stand up and
loudly, proudly reject a
public discourse by Israels
enemies who define Zionism as a malign colonial
or racist ideology, or, in
Livingstone s case, even
make a grotesque claim
that in his early days in
power, Hitler was a Zionist.
Zionism Month has been organised jointly by We Believe in Israel
(WBII) and the Zionist Federation (ZF) to
increase understanding of the origins and
context of the Zionist movement and the
necessity of a national liberation movement
for the Jewish people and the creation of
Israel.
There are many different strands of Zionist
thought. All of them can be celebrated

during Zionism Month.

One aim is to promote Zionism Month
across the country and promote a simple
understanding of Zionism as support for
Jewish national self-determination through
the creation and continued support for a
Jewish state in Israel.
This is something we believe all Zionists
can agree on, whatever their politics
and however religious they are.
May seemed the most
appropriate month because
it coincides with Theodore
Herzls birthday, which falls
on 2 May; Yom Hazikaron
(Israels Remembrance day,
11 May) and Yom Haatzmaut
(Israeli Independence Day,
12 May). It was always going to be
a busy month.
We have already launched an email
campaign to members of parliament, so
activists can explain to their MPs what being
Zionist means and find out whether those
MPs share basic Zionist principles and support Israel as a Jewish state.
We are encouraging people to put an
I am a Zionist Twibbon [an electronic
badge see inset image] on their Twitter and

Facebook profiles and use the Twitter hashtag #ZionismMonth2016. Weve even produced old-style I am a Zionist badges.
There will be a series of publications
including statements from famous supporters
of Zionism, and a pamphlet of essays about
what Zionism means today.
We will be discussing at a unique panel
debate what it means to be a Zionist and
celebrating at the Zionist Federations spectacular annual Yom Haatzmaut concert featuring Dana International.
In addition, all local communities are
being encouraged to hold their own events
to celebrate Israel and Zionism with their civil
leaders and organisations.
The events of recent days where the
history of Zionism and the very meaning of
the word have been debased make this
month of celebrating Zionism even more
essential. We are proud of Zionism and
everything that it has achieved. Its time
to explain to the wider British public what
Zionism is and what it means to us all.
As a non-Jew, I am proud to identify as
a Zionist a supporter of Jewish national
liberation and self-determination in Israel.
Now is the time to shout our Zionism from
the rooftops!

RABBITULIP
MIRIAM

AND MARK MAIER
OPINION:
SIDDIQ,

London mayoral vote was

a referendum on diversity
FOLLOWING A disheartening month, the election of Sadiq Khan as mayor of London is a relief
for those who place community relations at the
heart of their politics. His victory marks a triumph for those who demand that our politics
works for the common good, rather than pitting
individual groups against each other. Now is the
time to act decisively to ensure the spirit of
Sadiqs victory is here to stay. It is clear that both
the Conservatives and Labour have key decisions to take in the weeks ahead.
Sadiqs campaign was victorious as it spoke
to the long-term challenges facing Londoners.
His personal drive and work ethic was clear
throughout, particularly in contrast to the lethargic and pitiful Goldsmith. But this election was
about more than Tube fares and pollution levels,
vital though they are. Goldsmiths incessant attempts to portray Sadiq as an extremist by association ensured that the vote effectively
became a referendum on Londons diversity.
It is a matter of personal pride that Londons
riposte to Goldsmiths dog-whistle racism was
a resounding victory for Sadiq. That said, it is not
good enough for senior Tories to now denounce
the campaign through mealy-mouthed words to
the media. With a few notable exceptions, not
least former chairman Baroness Warsi, they were
largely silent as he defamed Sadiqs character
in pursuit of victory. If the public is to believe

that the Conservatives accept responsibility

for Goldsmiths tactics, action must follow. I look
forward to seeing how that takes shape in the
weeks ahead.
As for my own party, I can only repeat Sadiqs
words with sorrow when he says ongoing cases
of anti-Semitism are a badge of shame.
For almost 20 years, I have lived alongside
the Jewish community in Hampstead. Visiting
friends houses for Shabbat and the occasional
seder formed a routine part of my teenage
years. The pride I feel in representing this community knows no bounds.
Following the recent birth of my daughter, the
well wishes I have received from the synagogues
in the constituency have been remarkably similar
in their wording to those I have received from
my family. When I walk around the block, my
Jewish neighbours are giving me the same
stern, health-related advice that I hear from my
mother. However, recently, they have also told
me of their despair over the spate of anti-Semitic incidents within Labour. This is not something they should have to tolerate.
Labour must be unequivocal in its opposition
to anti-Semitism. We must take swift and decisive action where individuals or groups have
been found to advocate anti-Semitic ideals, or
indeed, have taken to the airwaves to deny antiSemitism is a problem.

Anti-Semitism is a problem and Labour must

lead the fight against it, not cower in fear of selfinflicted wounds.
My general lack of sleep has been a welcome
challenge in the first few weeks of bonding
with my daughter. Listening to Ken Livingstones
disgraceful rants over this period has been
considerably less welcome. I called for his suspension almost immediately after hearing his
remarks, and do not hesitate to say there
should be absolutely no way back for him following his perverse reimagining of the Holocausts narrative.
The terms of reference and the respective outcomes of the Royall and Chakrabarti inquiries will
be crucial in restoring the Jewish communitys
confidence in Labour Party. It is a credit to organisations such as the Jewish Labour Movement
and the Board of Deputies that they have shown
a willingness to engage, and Labour must deliver
the action that will create a future of certainty in
the fight against anti-Semitism.
The past month in British politics has been
trying at best. Both parties must do more to
stamp out two distinct but equally deplorable
prejudices that have no place in our society.
Sadiq Khans victory is a seminal moment, but
the spirit of his victory must be utilised across the
political divide, in order to deliver the positive
future that we all desperately require.

Tulip Siddiq
Labour MP for
Hampstead and Kilburn

What do you consider to be your

greatest/proudest achievement?

A group of British
Christians donated their
fourth ambulance to
Magen David Adom at a

I was so proud to see so many members of my family come together to celebrate my birthday, including family
members who I havent seen for years.
Who are your heroes of today and
yesteryear?
Margaret Thatcher a very clever lady
and our best prime minister.
If you were granted one wish to
see something in your lifetime, what
would it be?
To see both my daughters well and in
good health as they have both struggled with their health in the past.
If you could live your life again, would
you do anything differently?
I had a very hard life; we were very poor
and I had 11 siblings. If I were to live
my life again I would like to have a little
more money and an easier life.

Hettie celebrates her

Not everyone respects older people
but everyone who works at Vi & John
has so much respect for us.

Do todays young have it easy compared to when you were growing up?
Yes, much easier. When I was a child we
didnt have any of the machines that
make life so much simpler today.

What national or international news

Pulse Yom HaShoah commemoration

Together to remember
In stark contrast to the usual rugby chants, an eerie
silence befell Allianz Park on Sunday during the annual
Yom HaShoah remembrance. Some 3,000 people,
including more than 200 survivors, stood to honour the
victims of the Holocaust. Ben Helfgott told the assembled
that he and fellow survivors were proud you came
were passing the baton to you. Children from five
Jewish primary schools sang between speeches by
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and new Israeli ambassador
Mark Regev, himself the son of a survivor. Were no
longer a powerless people, he said. Praising the
attendance of new London mayor Sadiq Khan,
Yom HaShoah UK chairman Neil Martin said: Sunday
was a meaningful and historic day for our community
and our society at a much-needed moment.

Aish welcomes new head

New Aish chief executive Rabbi Daniel Rowe was introduced
at the Jewish outreach organisations annual gala dinner on
Monday, on a night which raised 500,000 for its educational
work. The evening, which honoured three families, including
the Misrahi family hosts, was the first collective gathering since
Rowe was confirmed in post in January, taking over from
Rabbi Naftali Schiff, Aish chief executive since 1999. Schiff said:
This evening represents a genuine refresh of Aish UK, in the
capable hands of one of the most refreshing Jewish leaders.
Rowe, who rose to prominence with his co-ordination of the
Chief Rabbis Shabbat UK, pledged to work tirelessly, day

DRF speechless over 1.2m pledge

Fundraisers helping to find a cure for the worlds biggest
genetic killer of children this week said they were
overwhelmed by the staggering response from the
Jewish community, after 1.2million was committed far
exceeded their target. Organisers at the Duchenne
Research Fund (DRF), set up to tackle the fatal Duchenne
muscular dystrophy, were left speechless after the 740seat dinner at Lancaster London Hotel to raise money for
research into treatments for the devastating musclewasting disease that affects one in every 3,500 boys. We
have been overwhelmed by the response, not just
financially, but in every way, said DRF co-founders Kerry
and Doron Rosenfeld. The keynote address was given
by renowned geneticist Dr Ronald Cohn, who said
that finding effective treatments was now within reach.
The charity has seed-funded biotechnology companies
hoping to make the breakthrough into the disease.

MEET THE BRITS WHO

Six of the most important jobs in Israeli public life are held by people from
the UK. Jenni Frazer spoke to them about their work and the circumstances
that led them into a lifestyle very different to what they left behind
LIEUTENANT-COLONEL PETER LERNER

IEUTENANT-COLONEL Peter Lerner

LBritish
43, is the slightly-unexpected sombre
voice of the Israel Defence Forces,
its spokesman to the international media
and the commander of the IDFs socialmedia activities.
Twitter users are accustomed to Lt-Col
Lerners swift and informative updates
whenever there is an operation or a terrorist incident. But its a long way from Northwick Park Hospital, where the future
lieutenant-colonel was born, or his primary
education at Kentons Sinai School.
The family were regular shul-goers and
the young Peter Lerner was a member of
Bnei Akiva. But when he was 12 and his

younger sister 10, his father a London

taxi-driver and his mother agreed that
they should move to Israel.
Before that, when he was eight, he had
had an unpleasant encounter with a neighbourhood child. He wore a kippah while
riding his bike and a bigger girl smacked
him on the face so that he fell over. The
girl was screaming: You are a Jew!
As he says now, for Lerner this was a
wake-up call, and he immediately enrolled in karate classes.
In the summer of 1985 the Lerners went
to an absorption centre at Mevasseret
Zion. There were lots of people there who
had difficulties, with Hebrew, with Israel,
he says. I never felt that. I felt right at
home immediately, and so did my sister.
The young Lerner went to school in
Jerusalem and joined the army at 18, serving first serving in a military police unit,
After that experience, he moved to be a
liaison officer between the army and a variety of international organisations such as
the International Red Cross, the UN and
foreign embassies.
His command of English refined from
that of a 12-year-old by his voracious appetite for reading soon led the army to
pay attention. He became the spokesman
for IDF Central Command and was then
sent to study political science at Bar-Ilan.
After a stint at IDF Staff College, he assumed his current role, explaining the work
of the military to the foreign press and running the armys considerable online presence. He is married to a lawyer and the
couple have one daughter.
Was his job mission impossible? No,
he replies. Is it hard? Absolutely. But for
me, this is not just a career, but something
which is bigger than any individual.
And I really think of it as a huge honour,
to have been this Anglo-Jewish kid from
Kenton and now to be up there speaking
for Israel.

KAREN KAUFMAN
AREN KAUFMAN is Hendon-born and
K
now works as part of a tight-knit circle
running the Initiative for the Middle East office of the former British prime minister Tony
Blair, acting as his media and external relations adviser.
Its a relatively new post, created after
Blair stood down as Middle East representative to the Quartet America, Russia, the
European Union and the United Nations in
June 2015. Kaufman, 38, had been working
as Blairs Quartet spokesperson, but when
he said he wanted to continue working for
peace in the region, she chose to join him
in his new venture.
She comes, she says, from a Zionist traditional family, and was born to parents
who had moved to Britain from India in the
1960s. She attended Hasmonean School

MICKY ROSENFELD

INCHLEY-BORN Micky Rosenfeld, 45, is IsFLerner,

raels police spokesman and, like Peter
the go-to man whenever there is trouble in the country.
He, too, attended Sinai School, then Hasmonean, and again like Lerner, was a member of Bnei Akiva.
He moved with his family to Jerusalem in
1987, when he was 16. His father was in
property and his mother was a lecturer in
English. He has two sisters, one older and
one younger.
I finished high school in Israel at the
Hartman School, taking advantage of the
English teaching. Then I went into the army,
in the Givati infantry brigade, specialising in
training and operations, he recalls.
Initially he thought about going back to
the UK to study, but instead decided to work

and moved to Israel a couple of weeks

after my A-levels, spent time volunteering
with UJIA in Ashkelon, and then made aliya
aged just 19.
The then Karen Saul threw herself into an
immersive Hebrew course at Tel Aviv University before enrolling there to read political
science and communications. All her studies
were in Hebrew, which massively improved her command of the language; but
her first job was working on the English edition of Haaretz.
I was there for six years, during the worst
of the second intifada, and it was incredibly
intense, Kaufman says. When a position as
spokesperson at the British Embassy in Tel
Aviv came up, she applied and became the
public face of the UK for many Israelis. She
worked with three ambassadors and was
there during prime ministerial visits to Israel
of Blair and Gordon Brown.

with security organisations that had the most

active units working on counter-terrorism.
At 22, Rosenfeld joined the Israel National
Police Counter-Terrorism Unit. The training
was very hard and it was difficult to get into
the unit, he notes.
But he succeeded, and spent 10 years
there, from 1995 to 2005, during which time
he took a first degree in Middle Eastern studies and a second in business management,
and also worked with the Foreign Ministry.
He spent time training other counter-terrorist units. Id always represented the Israel
National Police and the Border Police on visits from our counterparts, or when Id be sent
abroad. In 2005 I was offered the position of
spokesman to the foreign press.
Every criminal or terror-related incident in
Israel lands eventually on Superintendent
Rosenfelds desk. I have operating experience on the scene, but my experience and
English language skills are just as important,
he says. To do this job you have to understand the international perspective.
Israel works with Interpol and police forces
from Britain to America. Our focus is on
making sure we are one step ahead.
The foreign press, he says, knows exactly
what is going on. The Israel police work fast
and furious, but accurately, wherever they
can. We ensure that everything is instantaneous and online and all the security organisations work together, so that there are no
gaps in knowledge or response. Every operation has to be explained, and it is critical to
do it. My duty and that of all the police is to
protect Israel and its citizens.
Rosenfeld is married with three children
aged eight, 11 and 12. His wife is the eighth
generation of a Jerusalem Old City family,
and his two younger children study in the
Old City. Our lives [despite terrorism] continue as normal, and we continue to focus
and function, he says.
Im where I always wanted to be. Ive always taken 100 percent responsibility.

Kaufman spent seven years at the embassy and then decided to use my communication skills by becoming head of
international relations for ACRI, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. It was, she
says, a chance to do something for an organisation I believed in.
Two years after joining ACRI the Quartet
job came up and Kaufman joined a 50strong team working with Blair. Now she is
one of just five staffers, is married with two
little girls but retains her commitment to
Blairs ambitions for peace in the region.
The Initiative for the Middle East has, says
Kaufman, three priorities: Arab-Israeli regional co-operation; a dramatic improvement in Palestinian living conditions; and
Gaza reconstruction and opening.
Talking to this whirlwind of a woman, you
get the distinct feeling Blair is only going to
be able to do the job with her on board.

MAKE ISRAEL TICK...

JASON PEARLMAN
ASON PEARLMAN 34, says he is the last
Ja resonance
Pearlman born in Sunderland, which has
for the army of ex-pats from
there in Britain and Israel. Today, he is the
foreign media adviser for President Reuven
Rivlin and, like his other UK colleagues, arrived in post via a circuitous route.
The Pearlman family some of whom
helped to establish yeshivas in Poland and
Russia was one of the best-known families
in Sunderland, but when the towns kollel
closed down, they knew it was time to relocate from the sadly shrinking community.
At 17 Pearlman moved to London. My fathers mother came from London, he says,
and her mother, my great-grandmother
Rose, was sitting next to Herzl at the Sixth
Zionist Congress in 1903. I have a picture of
her on my desk at work.

YAIR ZIVAN

AIR ZIVAN, 31,is the English-language

Y
public face of Yesh Atid, the centrist political party led by former journalist Yair
Lapid. But before that, Zivan was the foreign
press spokesman for Israels ninth president,
Shimon Peres, so he, too, was in the thick of
explaining a quintessentially Israeli role to
the outside world.
Unlike all his British-born colleagues,
Zivan was actually born in Israel, but his parents both Israel-born moved to Leicester
when Zivan was five. My father was in textiles and Leicester was then the European
capital, he says.
He lived in Leicester until he was 18, attending Maccabi there werent many
youth groups in Leicester, he jokes and

spending his gap year in Israel. His parents

had already moved back.
I always knew I wanted to return to Israel, says Zivan, who read history at UCL
and then became the energetic campaigns
director for the Union of Jewish Students.
His huge advantage, of course, was that
the family spoke Hebrew at home while he
was growing up, so aliya did not present the
language obstacle for him that it did for his
UK-born colleagues.
But Zivan did not just fall in to a highprofile job. In fact, he says, my first job was
as a waiter while I was waiting to go into the
army. Then I taught for a few months in Israeli schools, and set up my own company
offering seminars for tourists.
Zivans army service was in the IDF
spokesmans unit and when that concluded
in September 2011 he began doing a masters degree at IDC Herzliya, the prestigious
academic think tank founded in 1994. On
spec, he sent in his CV to the presidents office, and was taken on to spend the last two
years of Peres presidency with him.
Zivan says he learned a huge amount
working with Peres, now 92, whose secret,
he says, is that he doesnt stop working.
And, he adds, Mr Peres is one of the only
people left from that generation of Zionist
leaders and pioneers. To hear first-hand
from him, stories about, for example, BenGurion, was just amazing.
The day that Peres stood down as president in July 2014 Zivan began working
with Yesh Atid as foreign policy adviser to
Yair Lapid.
Like his British colleagues, Zivan thinks of
himself as ideologically driven. A lot of us
came here very highly motivated. Perhaps
our peers in the UK are earning more, but
we feel we can make a difference.

Pearlman was a member of Bnei Akiva but

laughs when recalling that the Sunderland
branch was basically him and two others.
Once in London, he finished his schooling at
Immanuel College but insists he was a terrible student.
Nevertheless, Pearlman made it to university Brunel where he read politics and social policy. In his second year he married and
thus, he says, had less to do with campus life
or student politics than might otherwise have
been the case.
There were a lot of Israel debates at the
time but there wasnt really a strong Jewish
student presence, he says. Startlingly,
Pearlman recalls a Palestinian student who
came back to Brunel after a summer break in
Israel and told him: I was completely wrong
about Israel it is not an evil entity as I had
been led to believe.
Knowing that he wanted to make aliya but

SHARON SEGEL

HARON SEGEL was by coincidence close

Sthefriends
with Karen Kaufman as a girl and
pair were in and out of each others
houses in Hendon. Today, Segel is press officer at the British embassy in Tel Aviv and
liaison between the ambassador and the UK
Jewish community.
Segel, 38, like so many of her colleagues,
is ex-Bnei Akiva and comes from a modern
Orthodox family.
She attended Hasmonean Prep and Hasmonean School, and spent her gap year in

aware that his Hebrew was with a strong

Ashkenazi accent and limited understanding, Pearlman chose an unusual way of
learning the language.
He bought as many Israeli music CDs as he
could from rap to rock and learned the
lyrics. He also did a Jewish Agency ulpan in
Stanmore Synagogue.
After 18 months working for the Board of
Deputies and two years at the Israeli embassy in London, Pearlman and his wife made
aliya in 2006 with their first child, Avishai
(they now have three children).
Five months after their arrival came an
event that transformed the young couples
lives Yael, Pearlmans wife, was diagnosed
with lymphoma. She had to have emergency surgery and a Palestinian surgeon from
Hebron, at Shaare Zedek, saved her life,
Pearlman says. All too rapidly, his medical
Hebrew improved.

Israel, with eight months at sem and four

months on Kibbutz Lavi.
It was being in Israel and feeling the national outpouring of grief after a helicopter
crash that decided Segel that she was going
to make aliya, but her parents wanted her to
go to university in the UK.
She read history and politics at Queen
Mary College and became very involved in
UJS. She was QMC J-Soc president and then
became anti-racism officer at the University
of London Union.
I was in love with politics, says Segel,
who went on to do a masters in US politics
at Birkbeck College.
She thought her future lay in political journalism but took a job first with former MP
Andrew Dismore before finally making aliya
in January 2006.
My Hebrew was not at all good at that
point, she says. After a five-month ulpan,
she began working for Hadassah, which she
describes as inspirational politics stops at
the hospital doors.
After qualifying for a Legacy Heritage Fellowship, which supports outstanding graduates in America, Israel and Europe, Segel
joined the Israel Project, an Americanfunded, Israel-based NGO.
She spent four years with the organisation,
a time she describes as rewarding but
draining.
She took a brief time-out to travel and
when she returned to Israel the British embassy job beckoned. She joined its staff in
June 2014 and plainly loves the work.
Israelis are actually very Anglophile,
says Segel, adding that Brits are recognised
in so many fields as the arbiters of best
practice.
We bring, I think, a whole different perspective to that of other English speakers.

THE
ESSENCE
OF
ESSAOUIRA
Simon Busch explores a surprising corner of Morocco

am the last Jew of Essaouira! says

Josef Sebag amid his bric-a-brac
shop stuffed with Nubian masks,
priapic fetish objects, dog-eared volumes on African esoterica and exquisite antique amulets wrought by
Moroccan Jewish silversmiths.
Sebags not going anywhere. He
loves this Moroccan seaside town
where he was born, as were generations of his family before him. Not that
hes spent all his life here.
A consummate cosmopolitan, he
was educated in Casablanca before living for 15 years in New York City.
He even weirds me out by knowing
Brixton, that gritty but rapidly-gentrifying south London suburb where I live.
Brixton. Yeah, Brixton. Its a flourishing area. Its coming back.
Speaking of areas that are rapidly
gentrifying and flourishing, Essaouira
is fast on its way to becoming a kind of
Marrakech-on-Sea.
In the 20 years since he returned
here and opened his eclectic emporium, Sebag has seen Essaouira become reborn. Its a hip city. Its a cool
city. Its safe, its quiet, its tranquil. Writers and artists come here, they rent an
apartment and they stay.
Hip isnt necessarily a word I expected to come from the mouth of this
mid-50s antiquarian but, come to think
of it, with his crisp white shirt and
chunky amber pendant, he does exude
a certain enduring Beat with-it-ness.
The same could be said of Essaouira. Like Marrakech, it may be be-

coming but thankfully it retains a laidback quality that the better known
Moroccan metropolis lacks.
One thing a keen Morocco hand notices immediately upon rocking up in
Essaouira by bus or plane (easyJets
been flying in directly from London
Luton since last year; no stag or hen parties visible yet) is the absence of those
moustachioed, vaguely David Niven-ish
salesmen of carpets and twirly-toed
leather slippers who so, er, distinctly
mark many a Moroccan city trip.
Essaouira seems to be blithely holding on to its character: very mellow for
Morocco, fishy thanks to its still-busy
port and windy as hell gale-force
gusts blow in straight from the Atlantic,
tempering the sometimes fierce heat.
Oh, and cheap did I mention
cheap? Apart from the odd spruced-up
riad and a five-star hotel, this is still a
place where you can have yourself a
spanking fresh fish supper for south of a

fiver. Indeed , so characterful is the city

that bits of Game of Thrones were recently shot here on the striking 18th-century fortifications although, hilariously,
no-one in town seems to have heard of
the blood- and boob-heavy HBO hit.
But, hang on, somethings missing
from that character profile the Jews.
Essaouira didnt used to be Essaouira.
It was Jewish Mogador.
No sooner had the then-sultan built
the young city in 1765 than, spicing-up
the invitation with tax incentives, he invited Jewish merchants from far and
wide to live here and make it prosper.
And so it did. And so did the Jews
to the point that, for much of its history,
they outnumbered the Muslim population of the thriving city.
This was Timbuktus
port, where multifarious
goods arrived by
camel from that
desert trading post
to be shipped
throughout
the
known world.
There were 40
synagogues
in
town; Mogador was
probably the quietest place in Morocco
on a Saturday. And then:
1948. Shepherded by an ardent Zionist movement, Moroccos
Jews decamped en masse to Israel and
beyond, shrinking the population
within the country from 350,000 to
3,000 in a couple of decades.
No wonder now, in Essaouira as the
town latterly became known Sebag
feels as if he belongs (quite proudly,
though, Id guess) to a private club of
which Im the only member.
But the last Jew of Essaouira? Perhaps not quite. Fossicking about in the

mellah the towns

Jewish quarter, although in a sense
Essaouira was one
big mellah I come
across the half-restored Slat Lkahal
synagogue and its
tireless renovator,
Haim Bitton.
Another son of
the city, Bitton left Top, Essaouiras famous fortifications dominate the town;
above, Josef Sebag in his shop; inset, writer Simon Busch
with his family for
Israel and then the US and had entirely Livorno has been restored; beautiful,
forgotten about the building where, as repetitive rococo-like features througha child in the 1950s, he would pray and out the synagogue are based on a single
listen to the Andalusian music that decoration that wasnt nicked.

TodayCUSTODY BATTLE
BY RABBI ARIEL

MADONNA AND Guy Ritchie

have been battling over child
custody arrangements. This
has prolonged the court feud
between them to the point
that the presiding judge
begged the pair to relent so
their children can move on
with their lives.
So, what does the Torah
say about interminable custody battles?
The cost of ongoing disputes of this kind is both financial and emotional.
It causes waste of resources and distress, both of
which are serious Torah prohibitions.
The first feud in Hebrew
history recorded in the Bible
is the clash between Sarah
and Hagar.
Sarah wished Hagar to
leave home and God supported this decision.
Ishmael, son of Hagar and
Abraham, left with his
mother for the desert where
their supplies ran out. But for
angelic intervention, Ishmael
would have died.

Although this is not a custody feud in the sense of

parents fighting over children, there are homes where
one spouse refuses the other
spouse to have anything to
do with children from a former marriage, or at least not
to enter the home.
Psychologically this is
hugely damaging and probably why the Torah says Abraham saw evil in having to
send his son away.
Nonetheless, to protect
Abrahams home from further conflict, the secondmarried mother left with her
son and Isaac stayed with
both parents.
A psychological phenomenon which goes unrecognised in most parts of the
world is Parent Alienation
Syndrome (PAS).
Parents who lobby the
children to take sides cause
irreparable damage to the
family as a whole, a situation
that can sometimes lead to
the children maintaining
their contact with one parent
and not the other.
This negates the Torahs
teaching of respecting both
mother and father, as well as

Sedra:
Kedoshim
BY RABBI NAFTALI

SCHIFF

THE WORD holy conjures up other worldly images of angels and saints.
Holiness seems to be an abstract concept that
is the province of special holy men and women
who are set aside from society, living a detached
monastic existence.
Most of us would understandably reject such
a life choice.
When placed within that context, the opening
lines of this weeks sedra appear lofty, unattainable and even irrelevant.
Speak to the entire congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them, You shall be holy,
for I, the Lord, your God, am holy (Vayikra 19:2).
Holiness is presented as an imperative that is
to apply equally to the entire community - not
just to a priestly caste.
What type of holiness is being referred to here?
Are we all meant to start polishing our halos?
Judaism is not meant to be a set of detached rituals, the opening line of the sedra is challenging us
to be something, to engage with a process of becoming.
Just as the freedom attained at Pesach is not
just about a lack of constraints and peace is not

cerned with slanderous and

malicious speech.
For this reason, family
therapy in the search to live
together is superior to splitting the family.
In Judaism, the education
of a child is formally a fathers responsibility.
If contact deteriorates due
to the mother giving up on
insisting the child has contact
with the father, then the
mother and to a degree the
children are at serious fault
and can expect little or no
support in Jewish law.
The reverse is also true: a
mother must not be sidelined in a broken relationship, and penalties ought to
be rewarded against the parent promoting non-contact.
The best advice one could
offer to Ritchie and Madonna
is for them to ask a competent and qualified mediator
to meet them in a side room
at court and plan ahead for
their childrens lives.

THIS WEEK: Aaron

AARON IS well known as the older brother of
Moses and the man who served as his interpreter,
or spokesman, to the pharaoh in Egypt and later
as the first high priest in the Tabernacle.
Through this, he became the father of all future
Kohanim. But what is less well known is the fact
that the mourning of the emergent Jewish nation
upon Aarons passing was greater than for any
other leader, including Moses himself.
Rashi (d.1105) notes that the Torah uses a
unique phrase in reference to the death of Aaron:
They wept for Aaron thirty days, the entire House
of Israel (Numbers 20:29).
Following the passing of Moses at the end of
Deuteronomy, there is no similar emphasis given to
the fact that it involved the entire House of Israel.
What gave Aaron such an exceptional place in
the hearts of the nation?
In answer to this question, Rashi explains that
every single person appreciated something that
was uniquely special about Aaron.
As alluded to in the Mishnah (Ethics of the Fathers 1:12), he would walk through the camp look-

ing for opportunities to bring people together. Because Aaron loved peace and pursued peace,
we are told, he would turn around points of disagreement or dissent, creating instead unity,
friendship and love between people.
As a result of Aarons consistent and lifelong
work in bringing together individual people and
solving their disputes, upon his passing, the entire
House of Israel, without exception, was united in
its appreciation for this true peace maker.
In Alfred Nobels 1895 will, he set out three factors to be considered when deciding who should
receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
In the much-disputed first factor, Nobel referred
to those who have done the most or the best
work for brotherhood between nations.
According to the narrower interpretation of this
phrase, it refers to those who facilitate peace between previously-warring countries.
But understood more generally, it also includes
those who have worked to make the world as a
whole a better place in which to live, thus increasing general peace and friendship.
The question of which meaning Alfred Nobel
himself had in mind when he wrote these words
continues to be debated to this day.
Working to achieve world peace is a truly lofty aim.
But the story of Aarons life, and the outpouring
of genuine emotion on his passing, might just provide a solution to this dilemma.
Perhaps it is only when all these specific, even
seemingly-minor, conflicts in life are solved, that
true universal world peace can begin to be realised.

merely the absence of war, holiness is a positive

and wholesome concept and state of being.
In fact the purpose of the Exodus from Egypt
and the subsequent giving of the Torah was precisely that - for each Jew to be part of becoming
a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (Shemot
19:6).
Holiness does not demand that we withdraw
from the world, rather we are encouraged and
even expected to engage with everything that life
has to offer.
However, in order to maximise our potential
and not to get drawn down into a life of hedonism, there is a need to set parameters.
The Torah sets some objective boundaries
such as the laws of kashrut, but that doesnt
mean that we should spend our days gorging
ourselves to excess.
One who spends an inordinate amount of
time obsessing over their food should not do so
much that he forgets what life is really about.
In a similar vein, the sedra of holiness provides
us with many guidelines governing our interpersonal interactions, such as the well-known verse to
love your friend as yourself and the restrictions
against negative speech known as lashon hara.
These laws also place restrictions on our interactions, but in doing so provide us with a
framework to become people that are focused
upon important things in life and engage in
happy and healthy relationships.
Holiness isnt only for angels, nor is it reserved
for saints rather it is attainable by all who wish
to maximise the human experience.
Holiness is attainable by those who harness the
power of boundaries and focus the power of their
actions that that they become holy people, not
merely engage in holy actions.

Politics is at its best when theres WHY ISRAEL IS OUR

space for all voices to be heard BIRTHRIGHT TOO
BY RABBI MIRIAM

BERGER

THE NEWS was moving quicker than

I could keep up with and I was nervous to share the stage. In a week
of uproar over Malia Bouattia as president of the NUS and then continual
revelations of anti-Semitism in the
Labour Party, there I was standing up
in front of 6,000 people, a rabbi sharing the stage with the then Labour
mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan and Ed
Marsh-Rowbotham, director of the
Middlesex University students union.
We were part of the London Citizens Mayoral Assembly and Ed and
I were a pair of negotiators in action
working to pin down Sadiq to make
promises over his housing policy.
With the tight agenda and timing of
all Citizens events, there was no
scope for me to go with my own
agenda of whats right for the Jews.
Yet that night taught me this is the
way to do politics and this is the way
to share space and ensure all voices
are heard.
Over a year had been spent of
countless membership organisations
looking at what the big issues are for
their communities and their neighbours. Listening to shared problems
and seeing how we impact on each
others lives. Not criticising, not vying
for priority, but an understanding
of how different groups, with such
different lives that our paths may
never cross, affect each other or
change the city we share without ever
having noticed it.

Standing on that stage with Sadiq

and Zac Goldsmith turned politics on
its head.
We werent interested in their
manifestos; we were interested in
whichever of them was prepared to
take on our manifesto.
We, the citizens, will tell the politician what we want from our London,
because then we will know it will answer all our needs.
As the event came to an end, the
Jewish community gathered at the
Copper Box Arena for a special service
marking the seventh day of Pesach,
which reminds us that with freedom
from Egypt comes the responsibility of
Sinai. Yet inside this same venue, the
Muslim community also started to
gather for their evening prayers.
The muezzins call rang out
through the venue just as we turned
to face east for the Barechu. One set
of values, creating a better London
for all its citizens, two languages, two
sets of choreography, one direction
for our prayers.
We shared the space in a beautifully powerful way. Religion per se
had not brought us there; this was
not interfaith dialogue, but a shared
vision for the future and with that
desire, everything else could be overcome.
Watching Khans determination to
ensure a rabbi was at his swearing-in,
despite it being Shabbat, and with
his attendance at the weekends Yom
Hashoah commemorations, the Jewish
voice continues to be heard in London.

MY JEWISH

HERO
SINCE I can remember, it always
felt right to speak out when
something seemed wrong.
For me, it was always instinctive to question and challenge
when faced with obvious wrongdoing. To turn a blind eye was
never an option.
Human rights, social justice
and social action need champions, and so, for me, the Prophetess Deborah is my Jewish hero.
Deborah had intuition as well
as inspiration. She was an effective agitator, able to stir up and
excite public discussion with the
view of producing change.
She successfully stirred up
Israels concern about its low

spiritual condition. The land was

debauched and well-nigh ruined,
and under the rule of the
Canaanites liberty had been lost.
The people were dejected
and afraid, their spirits had been
broken and all hope of deliverance had vanished, but Deborah
did more than prophesy; she
aroused the nation from its
lethargy and despair.
Hers was a fearless and unsolicited devotion to the emancipation of Gods people, and she
awoke in them a determination
that they should free themselves
from their wretched bondage
and degradation.
Deborah was a judge, and

WHEN IT comes to the Progressive Jewish

relationship with Israel, two myths need to be
dispelled.
Many in our community feel Israel offers
little to Progressive Jews while, in the wider
Jewish community, it is often said we offer little to Israel.
In trying to change this narrative, Liberal
Judaism and the Movement for Reform
Judaism recently teamed up to announce our
first UJIA Birthright trip to Israel for young
adults.
This August we will send a full bus of
40 Jews aged from 19 to 26 many going to
Israel for the first time.
But other than some internal back-patting
after all, this is the first young adult project
by the new Liberal/Reform Alliance why
should we be excited?
What is so great about a country, whose
administration has only recently started to
pay Reform rabbis in the same way as Orthodox ones and recognise egalitarian prayer
rights? And one that doesnt appear to engage with Liberal Judaism or our values and
ideals?
The answer is simply that there is a lot to
celebrate in Israel and a chance to discover
an Israeli Judaism thats Progressive, politically and religiously.
This trip alone will let young Jews meet
inspiring Israeli figures fighting for Progressive and human, rights, including Anat Hoffman, who recently led the successful campaign
for an egalitarian prayer space at the Kotel.
It also allows participants to examine the
Israeli/Palestinian conflict through the lens of
Progressive Judaism.
Whether on an organised trip, as a family
or individually, I believe strongly that visiting
Israel helps us to connect to Jewish peoplehood and culture in a way that you simply
cant when living in Britain.

since the position of woman in

subordinate character, Deborahs
prominence as a ruler was somewhat remarkable.
She was truly ahead of her
time. All Israel was under her

righteousness, justice and mercy.
Deborah was a warrior, but
also a poetess. After her victory

as one of the finest specimens of
ancient Hebrew poetry.
Her song is immortal because
her life was dedicated to God and

What is the first step

in a divorce case?
Dear Rebekah
My husband and I are getting divorced. What should my first
step be?
Caroline

Dear Caroline
The divorce process can be overwhelming and the thought of
spending thousands of pounds on court proceedings extremely
scary. Your first step should be to find out all of the options that
you have to sort out the issues between you and your husband.
Most people can resolve matters without going to court.
The court system tends to result in people fighting more,
and this will be expensive, stressful and likely to lead to more
conflict.
One of the best ways to find out about out-of-court options for
reaching agreements is to attend an initial consultation with an
accredited family lawyer mediator. There is a general misconception that it is only necessary to go to a mediator once you
have decided that you want to go to court.
While it is true that in most cases you cannot start court proceedings without first having had a meeting with a mediator,
the purpose of an initial consultation with a mediator is to
provide you with information about all of the processes, including mediation, as well as other out-of-court processes, such as
the collaborative process, and arbitration.
A mediator will help to break down the divorce process, and
look at it one step at a time. Mediators can also signpost you
to other professionals who can provide you with financial
advice or emotional support, as well as advice as to the best
way to support children through the process.

Dear Hazel
My daughters mobility is severely impaired but, like any
teenager, she is desperate to be independent. We never
thought that this would be possible until we found out about
your developments of mobility apartments. My husband and
I think that these could be the answer, especially as we understand that you have house managers living on-site who

Dear Lorraine
You dont mention how old your daughter is, but if she if aged

Being fit and healthy isnt just about looking good it is about
being strong, cardiovascularly fit, having control over your body
and able to take on life with energy.
Just because you look slim on the outside doesnt mean that
you are healthy and fit on the inside.
It is ones body composition (i.e the amount of body fat a person has) that is a key indicator as to how fit and healthy a person
is. Its the internal fat, and the fat around the organs that one
cant see that is detrimental to ones health and fitness.
I have had many clients who have been shocked about how
high their body fat percentage is, even though they look good
and are slim.
Every single person should be exercising on a regular basis and
watching what they eat including those who are genetically
slim to keep as healthy as possible as well as looking great.
If you need any help with a training programme or nutritional
advice, please contact me and I would be delighted to help
you become fitter and healthier!

The

Restaurant Ours is the new venture from Tom Sellers

[pictured], the culinary genius behind Michelin-starred
Restaurant Story. The Knightsbridge brasserie is set to
make an impact with its fabulous triple-height
space accessed by a 30-metre
catwalk. The menu flags up
tuna with ginger, kale with
goats cheese and shallots,
steak tartare, sea bass with
asparagus & chervil and black
truffle tagliatelle. I might have to
try the white peach souffl with
champagne and elderflower
sorbet and cinnamon doughnuts with salted caramel
and apple. Sellers says he wants Restaurant Ours to be
one of Londons hottest places. restaurant-ours.com

A-MAY-ZING WAY TO SPREAD A SMILE

As part of its A-May-zing May month of fundraising,
children's charity Spread a Smile has teamed up
with Lola's Cupcakes, which has produced a
special Spread a Smile cupcake that will be sold at
its Brent Cross branch throughout May. Proceeds
will go towards helping the charity entertain seriously
ill children and teenagers in hospital. spreadasmile.org

PICTUREHOUSE PERFECT
Fancy dinner and a movie? The Crouch End Picturehouse
fits the bill perfectly. The restaurant has just launched a
new menu smoked mackerel
croquetas, cauliflower and
parmesan soup, slow-cooked
Moroccan lamb tagine and a
side order of sweet potato
wedges. Its a fab, bright,
sunny space, and worth
considering for lunch or dinner
even if youre not seeing a film.
If youre looking for something a bit different for a special
celebration, theres a 22-seater cinema with dining room
attached available for private hire. Picturehouses.com

WHEN IN ROME. try to fit in as many restaurants

as possible! But if you only have time for one, make it
Assaje at the Aldrovandi Villa Borghese hotel.
Situated a little out of the city centre, close to the
beautiful Villa Borghese gardens, this is a truly
magnificent hotel reminiscent of Italian glamour of
yesteryear.
The restaurant, however, is sumptuously modern, a
gleaming white space with a few stylish touches of grey
in the shiny marble floor and the (wonderfully
comfortable) upholstered chairs.
I knew we were in for a treat when they brought a
matching upholstered stool for my handbag!
We eschewed the five/six/seven-course tasting
menus in favour of the la carte, but the little extras
they brought to amuse our bouches extended our three
courses into six anyway.
We oohed, ahhed and delightedly worked
our way through dish after dish of
magnificence, with the most artistic
culinary presentation I have ever seen.
The surprisingly young but
exceptionally talented chef, Claudio

Mengoni, trained under Andrea

Migliaccio at the famed L'Olivo at the
Capri Palace. He astounded us with a
trilogy of aubergine, courgette and
artichokes parmigiana-style and tomato
soup with buffalo ricotta and basil pesto,
followed by seared wild sea bass with
chicory and lemon-scented mayonnaise,
and duck breast with spinach, red onions
and mustard sauce, cooked at a low
temperature to preserve the flavour and
tenderness.
We had no room for dolci but how
could we not try Il Cioccolato chocolate

cake, creamy chocolate and vanilla crme

brle, and Dolcezza al Caff a liquorice
coated ball of coffee sweetness with
hazelnut crumble.
And still there was more a tea trolley
with 20 infusions to choose from, served
with a plate of eight not-so-petit fours.
Wines were advised upon, sampled,
poured with aplomb and replenished.
The table was at nine. We collapsed into
a cab at 12. Three hours of foodie heaven.

New Place in Town:

Ember Yard

COAST WITH THE MOST

The team behind The Palomar are opening another
restaurant. The Barbary hits Neals Yard in London
next month and is described as showcasing
grilling and baking from the Barbary Coast to
Jerusalem. Its a no-booking,
24-cover venue and, true to
the new wave of thinking,
prices will include
hospitality, so there
will be no additional
service charges.

Ember Yard isnt a yard or even an outside

space. But the name evokes a dusty, faraway
location with exotic overtones. Its a secret gem
in Soho, immediately atmospheric, drawing you
into its dimly lit, romantic ambience.
I went with a painter who looks at things more
carefully. She liked the earthy, rustic dcor, low
hanging lights and bold ochre colour scheme.
The charming French manageress seated
us in the window and recommended a
quixotic wine from Puglia Come dIncanto
white and yet made from a red grape. The
slight sherry bouquet and gooseberry taste
were the perfect accompaniment to tapas.
The focus here is on smoking and
cooking with fire, so the dishes carry a faint
whiff of smoke, adding to their dimension.
Its one of those breezy, effervescent
places where the evening just flows.
The diverse menu makes it easy for
pescatarians like me, or vegetarians, and
dishes arrive scattergun fashion so youre
constantly rearranging the space, ordering more,
mixing tastes, filling up your glass, and its all so

flavoursome and delicious, smoky and fragrant,

that its very difficult to call a halt.
I loved the chargrilled salmon with caramelised
cauliflower; the painter was partial to hot smoked
butternut squash with ricotta, lemon and
grape jam.
And then there were the six other dishes
including caramelised pears with hazelnut
crumble, yoghurt and star anise for dessert.
Full of happy people enjoying their dinner,
Ember Yard is the kind of place to which you
want to return again and again.
Ember Yard and sister restaurant Dehesa,
also in Soho, have launched weekend breakfast
menus with dishes including grilled sardines on
toast with tomato and fresh basil, and avocado
and grilled spring onions on flatbread with
poached egg.

The Restaurant Club is a vibrant Facebook

group with 9,000 members.
Last week, one member was disappointed to
turn up at a restaurant shed booked to find that
her table had been cancelled. The restaurant
had called to confirm the reservation, but the
person who took the call had limited English,
didnt really understand and didnt pass on the
message. Based on not being able to get hold
of the diners, the restaurant cancelled the booking. Surely theres a better way for restaurants to
confirm tables?
Liz said: Many restaurants do still

call to confirm, but if I don't hear from

a restaurant, I usually call them the
evening before or on the morning
Im going, just to confirm. However I
shouldn't be the one doing the chasing!

THE RESTAURANT CLUB is a new

loyalty scheme that connects discerning
diners with independent restaurants,
giving exclusive offers to members.
Nearly 100 restaurants in and around
London are on the scheme, with more
signing up every day.

SHERWOOD
Farewell to Jewish
footballs Jose
IN THE SAME year the self-proclaimed Special One decided to
call it a day from his beloved Chelsea, David Garbacz, the Jewish
Jose Mourinho, has done likewise with Hendon. Not one whos
backward in coming forward, hes definitely no shrinking violet, has
caused controversy over the years, and fortunately for me, loved to
give a quote (he did though last longer than two seasons at the
club). But more important than anything else, hes been one of the
key figures in Jewish football, one of the characters, and provided
plenty of drama and entertainment both on and off the pitch.
Bowing out having delivered a third consecutive national cup win,
and still the only manager to have landed a Jewish football treble,
he said: I leave with a heavy heart but have no regrets. Ive loved
every minute of the last six years and it has been a true honour to
have managed some really great players. Mourinhos absence was
shortlived, lets hope Garbaczs will be likewise.
BAKU WAS a hive of activity for Israeli and Israeli-British judokas at
the weekend. Gili Cohen won her first ever International Judo Federation Grand Slam title, winning the U52 kg event, though it was
another Israeli, who now represents GB, who was a keynote winner.
Alice Schlesinger, who switched allegiance in 2014, won her first
Grand Slam title in four years, beating Israeli Yarden Gerbi on her
way to gold. Winning the final in a mere 27 seconds, she also secured 500 qualifying points in her bid to reach this summers
Olympic Games.
LAETITIA BECK, the first Israeli player to qualify for the LPGA Tour,
was making headlines last week when took the first round lead at
the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic. Unfortunately, that was as good
as it got for her, as she finished in joint-15th place. The 15,000 she
eanrt should though serve as a small sweetner as she gets set to
represent her country in Rio.

THE VOICE OF JEWISH SPORT

FC TEAM B kept alive their Division One title hopes as a hat-trick

from Lorian Madanes helped
them to a thumping 11-0 win over
Brixton Old Boys.
Richard Salmon, Andy Sheena
and Jon Breger scored two each,
with player-manager Mitch Young
and James Korn strikes wrapping
up the scoring.
Young said: It was an extremely comfortable performance
where we should have scored 20.
However, we can only beat what
we are put up against and its a
shame we werent tested heading
into two massive games.
They meet leaders Woodford
on Sunday, where a win will leave
them needing a win in their final
game to secure the title.
Division Two runners-up Maccabi London Lions B were comfortable 2-0 winners at Hendon B,
thanks to goals from Joshua
Bloom and Zak Linden. Manager
Samuel Marchant said: We performed well today. We werent at
our clinical best but we were very
solid and fought extremely well.
Hendon made it very tough
for us and although were near the
end of the season with the standing pretty much cemented, it was
a really strong and competitive
game of football which was great
to see.
Real Hendon ended their season in style as they hit Temple Fortune for six. Danny Steel scored
twice, with Gav Noe, RA Noe, Yoni
Cohen and player-manager
Chaim Gothold also all on target.
Gothold said: It could have been
a lot more but fair play to Temple
Fortune for working hard until the
final whistle. It was a good way to
sign off the season.
Fortune
player-manager
Jonathan Cohen said: We were
poor in the first half but acquitted
ourselves much better in the second. I have to say that I dont think
the pitch was conducive to a de-

Rowley Lane.
Elsewhere, the final league
match of the season saw North
London Raiders beat HMH 6-1.
Tony Plaskow scored twice, with
Andrew Wolfin, James Cartmell, Don Hodes and Wayne
Davidson also on target.

We fell short of our goals for

Thats life! Raiders treble dream dashed by Avi Korman
BY ANDREW

SHERWOOD
A STUNNING late strike from Avi Korman
saw Hendon end North London Raiders
hopes of securing a league and cup treble,
as they beat them 1-0 in Sundays Peter
Morrison Trophy final at Wingate.
Raiders were looking to complete a clean
sweep of trophies this season, having already
won the Premier Division title and Cyril Anekstein Cup a feat only managed by one other
team Hendon, in 2014.
Saying the thought of stopping Raiders
equalling their treble-winning feat spurred
them on, Hendon manager David Garbacz

said: We really did not want them to emulate our achievement, especially as they
would have done so in invincible fashion like
we did a few years back. That acted as an
extra spur for us. This win caps what was ultimately a successful season for us if not so
the league. We have still proved we were the
team to beat in the cups and to win this national cup for a third successive season is a
remarkable achievement which we are all
very proud of.
Once again, congratulations to Raiders on
a tremendous double-winning season, but it
feels good to only say double and not treble.
Raiders joint-manager Rob Richman conceded the better team won, saying: Congratulations to Hendon, they pushed us close in

the league last season and we know they are

a very strong outfit, a great group of players
and they deserved the win.
It wasnt a great game of football. The
heat and state of the pitch made it very difficult for both sides to play much exciting football. In addition, you have two sides who are
very evenly matched who in truth cancelled
each other out.
Disappointed with the manner of the loss,
but proud of his sides efforts over the course
of the season, he said: Its never an enjoyable
experience to lose a cup final in the last
minute and the boys were all disappointed,
but we have much to be proud of this season.
To win back-to-back doubles is a huge
achievement and one we are quite rightly

proud of. It hasnt been done since

1977-78 so we made our own little
bit of history this season.
The boys have done everything asked of them this season,
given
absolutely
everything and have shown
along the way what a talented
group of footballers they are.
They have been a delight to
manage and a credit to themselves so congratulations to all of
them on a tremendous season.
