What’s it all about?

The FIFA World Cup is the biggest tournament in football and only takes place every
four years. This June, national teams from all over the world will be heading to South
Africa, where 64 matches will decide who the world champions are. It is the first time
that the World Cup has been held anywhere on the African continent. The World
Cup final is the most-watched sporting event on Earth, and the 2006 showdown
between Italy and France was seen by 715.1 million viewers worldwide!

When did it start?

The first ever World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. Thirteen teams took part and
hosts Uruguay won, beating Argentina 4-2. Both of the semi-finals finished 6-1!

Who’s playing?
204 national teams entered the preliminary competition for this year’s tournament,
with only 32 qualifying to play in the finals in June. Spain and Brazil are the current
favourites to win, closely followed by England and Argentina.

       When can I watch it?
The opening match, South
Africa vs Mexico, kicks off at
15:00 on Friday 11 June. There
are games most days until the
final at 19:30 on Sunday 11 July.
