Introduction
Thats sad. How plastic and artificial life has become. It gets harder and harder to

find somethingreal. James C. Scott (2011 p. 23). Being plastic or artificial is so common
nowadays. Women tend to go for cosmetic surgeries to improve their cheekbone structure,
their lips, nose etc. Some even completely change everything, they add new features to
themselves. Tend to go for permanent tattooed eyebrows rather than an imperfectly
constructed real eyebrow which is a necessity for the face especially for the eyes. A lot of
women nowadays are more artificially made. They tend to enhance their looks or improve
ones imperfections or flaws just so they can feel accepted by society. According to Mayo

Clinic, The goal of cosmetic surgery is to improve a person's appearance and, thus, selfesteem by changing the way she or he looks. Cosmetic surgery can be performed on any part
of the face and body.
Most girls have insecurities. They pity their body image especially when its not the
standard Barbie doll type of beauty. Cosmetic Surgery such as liposuction, breast
enhancement or augmentation and others has become very common among women. The
women who love to spoil themselves just for enhancing beauty and the women who
completely change every single feature they have so that theyd be accepted by society.
Nowadays, artificial bodies, noses, mouths, lips, ears and many more are acceptable in the
society. A lot are into turning their physical flaws into perfection for the sake of acceptance
of the society. Young women feel insecure, because the media or the society pressures them
to get the 'perfect body'. In todays generation, beauty is a demand in society. You are not
accepted if your flaws are not perfect. You are not accepted if you are not nearly as pretty as
2

those girls/boys you see in the

movies, the celebrities, models, actress/actors etc. Society has made up this somewhat rule
that in order for people to accept you, you must be beautiful in the outside. Perfect body,
perfect tan, perfect eyes, perfectly chiseled jaw, perfect kissable lips and so on and so forth
that is almost the same as that of Barbies body and look.
Whatever happened to inner beauty? Whatever happened to the widely known saying
What is beauty without brains and a kind heart? People are becoming so shallow that it
doesnt matter if you struggle in terms of intelligence, it doesnt matter if youre the most
arrogant person in the entire world. What matters the most to them is that you have the

perfect body and face then will you only be accepted and loved by the society. With the
beauty and the perfect body, one van go places as they say. Number is a huge thing in the
society, the number of your weight, height, size of your bra, size of your pants etc. People
have become so shallow to the point that discrimination in terms of what men and women
wear has risen. If you are the definition of beauty, you may wear whatever you want even if
youre almost naked but when youre physically challenged, you are not allowed to wear the
type of clothes you want to wear. Lets take for example a fat woman, people are going to
judge her on what she wears. If she wears shorts and fitted shirt, people are going to talk
about her and spread rumors and so on.
This research will mainly focus on teenagers of today and how cosmetic surgeries or
plastic surgeries will affect them as a whole. Since society has placed a huge pressure in
terms of looking good, teenagers are turning to other possibilities of correcting their
imperfections through cosmetic surgery. A survey was conducted of how the demand for
3

cosmetic surgery has been increasing since 2012 up to the present year.

Body
According to Zuckerman, Diana PhD. In 2012, more than 236,000 cosmetic

procedures were performed on patients between 13 and 19, including more than 75,000
surgical procedures such as nose reshaping, breast lifts, breast augmentation, liposuction, and
tummy tucks. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly 64,000
cosmetic surgery patients in 2014 in USA were aged 13-19, and experts believe this number
is bound to rise. A lot of teenagers nowadays are after breast lifts and liposuction because of
the attention that they seek from the opposite sex (male). Others, tend to follow trends like

the famous Kylie Jenners liposuction or Kim Kardashians huge breast and butt. Others, do
this type of surgery to increase self-esteem or lessen insecurities they feel when they see
celebrities who are almost described as a goddess and the problem with this is that teenagers
dont realize the possible risks or complications that may later on happen in the process of
doing this surgeries like what Miss Zuckerman, Diana PhD said, One of the main concerns
about plastic surgery on adolescents is that their bodies are still maturing.
Most procedures done by the teens like liposuction, breast augmentation, nose lifts
and so on may not be needed as soon as one grows older and their bodies have matured. The
process of having cosmetic surgeries at such a young age may cause complications in oneself
such as hormonal imbalances which will be discussed later on at the Effects of Cosmetic
Surgery. As the studies kept going on, they later on find out the major causes as to why
teenagers at such a young age are into cosmetic surgeries when in fact their body has not
even reached to a level of maturity. The major causes as mentioned a while ago are: Low
Self-esteem due to insecurities, Romantic Reasons (Beauty for love), and to be accepted by
society. The first cause, Low self-esteem due to insecurities. Since celebrities are such a huge
hit in the world, most teens look up to them especially if its their idols. They try as hard as
they can to improve the way they look so they can be nearly as perfect as those celebrities.
They try to copy their looks by putting make-up on and when theyre not satisfied they tend
to go for cosmetic surgeries. Others, lose their self-esteem because people tend to judge and
degrade them all the time. There are a lot of people who are racist, who love to discriminate
people so much. They call people names like pig, ugly, fat and many many more harsh
words which will lead them to actually having cosmetic surgery. Changing every flaws in the

body and face to perfection for the sake of the acceptance that they seek from others and
also to put up with the pressure that the media has been putting on teenagers or the pressure
that they get from the media because of how celebrities look almost perfect. Another is
Narcissism, erotic interest in oneself and one's physical appearance. Too much selfimportance or worth. The number of likes or comments you get on your pictures wont
define who you really are. They are just merely numbers. Teens should not make this as their
basis for being pretty or handsome. This is one of the reasons why teens also tend to go for
5

cosmetic surgeries.
The second cause is the romantic reason (beauty for love). A lot of teenagers are into
fairytales. Looking for love, seeking attention form the opposite sex. Looking for that
happily ever after that every teenager is looking for but cant find. Because in todays
generation, beauty is a must for a happily ever after. Most men nowadays are very shallow.
Not just men but also women. People dont fall in love at the personality but they fall in love
with the appearance. Theres no such things as personality at first sight. One cant judge just
by the appearance of the person if he or she is good or not. Everyone looks at the appearance
first. They develop infatuation when that person is handsome or beautiful and because of
that. Because of the amount of attention the beautiful and handsome people receive, those
physically challenge person will tend to try and improve their looks first by the use of
cosmetic products and if it does not work they go for cosmetic surgeries.
Lastly, Demand of beauty by society. Society has set its standards of how an average
teenager should look like at this generation. A lot of teenagers nowadays are so excited to
reach to that point where their breast grows, their full lips turns perfectly beautiful, have that

rosy cheeks that will add up the glow in their face and their fats decreases thats why they
turn to cosmetic surgeries. Society has taught people to be shallow. Has taught them to judge
every single person that does not qualify to the standards that they have set. Making those
people develop low self-esteem which will lead us back to one of the major causes of
cosmetic surgeries among teenagers.
As time goes by, teenagers seek acceptance more and more from peers and the
opposite sex. And the more that society pushes them away, the more society impacts a huge
pressure on them the more teenagers will give in to the cosmetic surgeries which will lead to
complications in the health. Complications that may increase the rick in the health of a
certain teenagers life. According Zuckerman, Diana PhD., Most women who get breast
implants within the first three years may include infections, hematomas, seromas, capsular
contracture (the hardening of the breast), loss of nipple sensations and scars. The effect of
cosmetic surgery on teens is the Complications that may cause risks in the health of an
individual. Infection at the site of the incision can occur in the process of the surgery.
According to Linda Ray, Excessive bleeding can occur while a wound is open, and
occasionally a blood transfusion may be required. Blood clots may spring up following
extended periods of surgery, although walking and movement following surgery usually help
to remove the risk. Some cuts done during the surgery may be infected causing
complication in a certain teens health. Hematomas and loss of sensations may happen in the
process. Also not all surgeries done in a certain individual is assured with a 100% well done
or perfectly done surgery. Say for example a butt augmentation, where in they fix rubber
foam in your butt to increase in the size. In the process of this surgery, problems may occur

in following the procedures like moving of the foam to the different size, rubber foam may or
may not turn the other way around. So there is no guarantee that a cosmetic surgery may be
100% perfect that is why some clinics or hospitals offering cosmetic surgeries to teens may
be refused in such condition like that certain part may mature later on as they grow older.
According to Dr., Richard Ellenbogen, "A rhinoplasty in a 16-year-old nose that is still
growing will require a revision later on, so that is refused," he says. "Breast augmentation
in many teens is refused for lack of emotional maturity, and certain liposuction procedures
which create a six-pack or air between the thighs are delayed to a later age."
Teenagers must learn that at this very young age, they should not be excited or
hurried to reach at the body level of maturity. Teenagers have to learn to wait for them to
reach maturity to undergo a certain teenagers perfectly normal life. Having insecurities,
being judge by others, rejection by the majority and many more are part of life. No one can
please everybody in the world. Theres always that one person wholl judge you negatively,
hate you for your guts but one must always be strong and not care of what others think.

Conclusion
Since society has placed a huge pressure in terms of looking good, teenagers are

turning to other possibilities of correcting their imperfections through cosmetic surgery

which is wrong unless of course that surgery is really needed for it may help lessen
complications in terms of their health and hormonal imbalances. But as a whole, teenagers
should avoid early exposure to cosmetic surgeries no matter how normal it is nowadays.
Teenagers should learn to limit themselves and learn that no one can please every single

person in the world. Outer beauty is not the basis of oneself but the inner beauty as well.
What is the point of beauty when you heart and intentions are as cold as ice? Teenagers
should learn to wait so that they wont regret any cosmetic surgeries that may be done in
their body. The key to this is self-acceptance. When you learn to love yourself for who you
are, you will not need others approval of you. Theyll believe in you if you believe in
yourself. So every teenager out there should learn to keep their head up held high and learn
to accept their flaws for we are born to be perfectly imperfect in every possible way.
According to a famous comedian in the Philippines, Vice Ganda, Turn your flaws
into flawsome. Your flaws makes you up. They are a part of defining who you are. Love
yourself and learn to accept your imperfections. That is a part of improving or being aware
of you worth (self-importance). Like avoiding Narcissism, erotic interest in oneself and one's
physical appearance. Teens shouldnt possess a GGSS attitude. (Gandang-Ganda/GwapongGwapo Sa Sarili). Like, when they post a pic and it get many likes it means he or she is
handsome or pretty. And it shouldnt be like that. Likes are but numbers. It doesnt define
who you are.
